I hope you don't mind me asking about renting DVC points.
I read tmli's post tonight about DVC and it got me thinking about renting points.

To be honest, until tonight I had never given them a second thought, until now . Now, it seems to totally make sense (renting points). Can you please read my proposed plan and tell me if it makes any sense or not.

Dec 12 or 13 (check-in), 2006 until Dec 17 (check-out): stay at a value and hope for a general code to come out. If not, pay rack rate.

Dec 17 (check-in), 2006 until Dec 22 (check-out) :
stay at OKW, by renting points from someone. This is considered choice season and would need 8 points per night (mid-week stay, studio). I checked allearsnet.com and it looks like I would only need 8 points per night . At $10/per point it would cost only $80US/nt including tax . Does this make any sense? How can a $259US/nt (rack rate during value season) PLUS tax room go for only $80 including tax???

Am I missing something or confused about something? If NOT, this is definately the way to go, don't you think????

Please give me any advise you can on this. And please tell me the best way to rent the 40 (?) points I would need for 12/2006. Imagine staying in a deluxe for the price of a value. I must be figuring something wrong. If this info. is correct, I wonder how soon I could rent points for a 12/2006 vacation.

Thank you
Suzy V.

Renting points at a DVC resort is an excellent EXCELLENT way to save money. Check out the DVC Rent/Trade board and see if you can get booked in. The reason (IMHO) that you can get a $200+ room for $80 is because they take advantage of the non-DVC members using the resort and charging them Deluxe rates. Secondly, the going rate for DVC rental points is guesstimated at $10/point.. that's just the going rate! You should take advantage of it; if you want to REALLY enjoy DVC upgrade to a 1BR at OKW for 16pts/night. Quite the difference!

Splurge for the 1 bedroom...king size bedroom, washer/dryer, full kitchen, living room with pull out couch...room for air beds if your kids prefer to sleep on those instead of the couch:)...and a jacuzzi tub, and full size balcony :) You'll have room for an 8foot tall Christmas tree if you wanted;)

Have fun!

I still think it sounds too good to be true. I have spent the morning reading dis and allearsnet. com and I think I kind of understand how it works. I am just worried there won't be rental points/room available for our dates. I have read so much about the DVC resorts and they all look fantastic. I am now considering a studio at Beach Club Villas Dec 17-Dec 22, 2006. It would be more points (12/nt vs. 8/nt) but the Stormalong pool area looks amazing. I can see DD7 spending hours and hours in there.

But too upgrade to a one bedroom, I think the idea is fabulous but don't know if the budget would allow. Especially since we are planning at least 10 or 12 nights in WDW ( 5 nights at least probably more like 7 at POP then rent DVC points for 5 nights) followed by a full week at Siesta Key, FL. This is going to be a $$ trip.

Thanks again for all the tips.
If I go ahead and do this when would be the best time to post that I want to rent points/make a ressie on the DVC rent/trade board? That is the only area of the whole points renting thing I am VERY unsure of. It sounds like ressies can't be made until 11 months out (home resort) and 7 months out (other DVC resorts). I am not sure about this at all.

Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Hi!:)
Couple of points:
1) Kids can't go down the SAB slide unless they can pass a swim test, and they can't wear life jackets on the slide.
2)OKW,BWV,VWL and SSR slides ...don't have to pass a swim test and can wear life jackets.

This was critical info for us!!LOL

As far as the 11mos out thing...
Are we in the 7mos booking window for Xmas? I can't do that math that quick...if yes, then any owner from any resort can book for you at BCV....just sitting here thinking about it, I'm saying no...still outside.

If we're still in the 11mos window, then you need someone with points at BCV. (Sorry, we're out of points already!!LOL...otherwise, I would rent them to you:))

Go ahead and post over on the Rent/Trade Board:) A DVC member- who owns at any resort- can always call and check availablity - no problem.

Once you find someone you feel comfortable renting from, make sure you give them your room requests...no smoking, preferred floor, close to elevator...etc.

Be prepared to pay a little more than the 10/point rate. You may have to go to $11 or $12. It's a popular week for rentals... still a bargain!!:)

HTH!!

Hmm.. add 1.. carry the 2.. uhh.. Nope! Not 7 month window yet. Hehehe.. I was going to say that those weeks may be a little hard to get, especially at the Beach Club but definitely give it a try! The Boardwalk is pretty cool too! Renting is the way to go and *maybe*.. just *maybe* the DVC bug will bite. I know we haven't regretted taking the plunge!

Sorry, we are looking for Dec 17-Dec 22 ,2006, not 2005. I know I know, I am very much ahead of myself in this (as I always am). I usually try to plan vacations at least one or two years in advance. Just call me crazy. I assume January 17, 2006 (11 months prior to needing a studio in a DVC resort) would be the magic date to make the booking. Is that the day I would enter a post on DVC rent/trade forum? Or would I enter it a few days/weeks before???

Thanks so much for all of the info. What is the swim test like at SAB? I assume it is just to use the slide. DD7 swims like a fish (she swam by age 4) buy DS4 is very timid of the water. By the time we go, he will be 6, I don't know if he could pass a test of any sort. If not, he can still use the rest of SAB, correct? Which would be fine, since I can't see him wanting to go any where near the slide.

It sounds like BCV is very popular. Even if we couldn't get into BCV, I would be very happy at any other DVC resort. I have read tons about them this morning and also love OKW and BMV. I still have to read about WLV yet though. Is it easier to make a booking at OKW? At only 8 points/night I assume that this resort would book up first????

Regarding the booking part:
I assume that the booking would be made in my name (but by the DVC member) and that I would receive documentation from DVC?? I have read that I do not have to pay a % until I receive booking info.? Is that correct? And that the deposit would be approx. 25% and then pay balance 30-60 days prior to check-in?? I know that each rental agreement would vary, but after what I have read today, is this sort of the norm??

Mikey and mbb: You have no idea how much I appreciate the effort you have put in answering my questions.

Since I've never rented before I'll just go from what I've read here on the boards.
The reservations do go in your name and you will receive a confirmation # from the renter. You can call DVC Memberservices if you want to confirm with them. Usually it's a 50% fee up front and then 30-31days before the trip you "settle up" with the renter, cuz after 30-31days (forget what it is) if the resevation is cancelled the member can't get their points back (if you cancel before the 30-31days you get your points back).
OKW being the biggest (so far) DVC resort would be the easiest to get into. The VWL are AWESOME.. love the location.. but really they all are awesome (I LOVE SSR.. I like being close to DTD so I can stroll.. hehehe).. but what you can do it get a member who has 11month priority (wherever) to book you in their home resort now, and then put you on the waitlist at the 7month window (...can you do that.. hmm.. maybe I'm getting ahead of myself).
Just let them know what you want to do.. most DVC renters are very flexible, but I would post on the forum NOW what you're looking at doing and see if anyone at the BCV is willing to book NOW for your December trip!

Hope I'm not being too confusing! :)

Wow, you really know what your talking about. So would it be most beneficial for me to:
1. Choose a DVC resort (ex. BCV)
2. Post a thread to rent points now , ex. from a BCV owner
3. pay them the deposit now
4. Have them book BCV at the 11 month window (January 17, 2006)
5. Pay the rest 30 days prior to check-in

My concern: what would happen if they weren't able to book what I wanted at the 11 month window? Be put on the waitlist at another DVC resort (NOT their home resort) and have them book me elsewhere at the 7 month window (May 17, 2006)?

Please let me know if any of this makes sense.
Thanks, Suzy V.

I'm glad I'm home sick today.. hehehe.. lots to respond to!
If the renter is really good they will call to reserve right at the 11month window as soon as member services opens(which would be the day you would be checking *out* of the resort); you have an extremely good chance of getting any request at the 11month window cuz no one else is allowed to book there but members.. so I'd say you'd be in luck. That's why you should "buy where you want to stay" when you join DVC because you have that 4month advantage over non-owners.

Now that I think of it you shouldn't be able to waitlist at another resort until the 7 month window comes up.. which at your time of year may be tricky at BCV, BWV or the VWL, so that's why I would find a renter that owns at the resort you want to stay at to give you that advantage!

Clear as mud?

If I can bud in here.. I am looking at the OKW 1 br.. for around December 7-14 2006.. LONG way off.. lol.. my question is I can put 2 of my girls on the king bed and then 2 on an air mattress.. (they are young, that is still fun for them.. lol) and then us on the couch.. but is there enough Dishes for 6? or are you not allowed to have 6 in the room.. looks like there is lots of room but I have never seen it to be sure, we did enjoy staying at FW cabins, but it was tight in there and we got a general code and got it for $1201 for 7 days including tax if I did not use a code it would be $1834.00 but OKW would be around $1600 for the same time, since it looks like codes are hard to come by lately this may be a better option... but would it work? the 2 bdrm is out of my budget. what do you think? my kids are 8,7,5 & 3.. can you rent a 1 bdrm with 2 queen or double beds or all they all king in the bedroom?
Thanks!

So is this what I should do:
1. Pick a resort/room type
2. At the 11 month window (Jan 22, 2006) or maybe a couple weeks before, post what I want to rent on the DVC rent/trade board.
3. Hope some one responds and is willing to call CVD member serivces at opening time on Jan 22, 2006 to book ressie.

Wow, this seems so much simplier now then it did several hours ago.

My biggest dilemma it seems: which resort to pick??? I really like OKW and BCV. Do you really think it would be easier to get a studio for OKW (since it is very big and maybe not as popular as BCV) for my dates (Dec 17-22, 2006)? If so, great since I am loving that resort.
We live on a lake and our house is basically built in a forest and we have a bird sanctuary on one side. It is very quiet here, therefore, I can relate a little better to OKW. BCV and BMV's look nice too but it might be a little busy for me (although I know DH and the kids would prefer it). Hmm, decisions, decisions. I still have to find some time and look up WLV tonight. It will probably be right up my alley.

Thanks again for all your help.
Mousy in Canada: good luck with all your planning. Sorry I can't be of assistance. Maybe you could rent points for a 1 bdrm and bring some paper plates/cups/disposable cutlery. It sure would would beat ($$$) renting points for a 2 bedroom.

:cool1: Welcome to the DIS.Your thread is one that I know a bit about....For years,we'd travel to FL and stay at the WDW value resorts-ASMovies,ASMusic,and last year Pop Century.
Also ,last year,I rented someone's DVC points so we could stay 5 days at OKW.Well, after staying at that beautiful studio for 5 peaceful nites, there's no going back for us.
We'll be going back "home" to OKW in another studio this November, for 12 nites, and can't wait.......Bought a member's DVC points. It's very easy to do,and I highly recommend it ....It is well worth it.And,OKW is an awesome resort........We can't wait to get back!
Enjoy your trip! :hourglass

Abba98: thanks for the info. We were in WDW 12/2004 and stayed at ASMo(loved it) and I assumed we would always stay in values. Then last night tmli posted about renting DVC points so I spent the day reading about this. It seems like a fabulous way to vacation for an inexpensive price. I just wonder why more people don't rent.

Is there anything you can tell me about OKW? Is there a beach area for the kids to play at ? I understand that they can't go in the water but it would be fun to play in the sand. Is there a place that you can purchase a refillable mug? Also: once you have paid the deposit to the owner, can you then call member services yourself to check on the ressie (add room requests etc). What area would you recommend for two adults and two children? We would love to be by the main pool (with the sand castle slide) but also close enough to the main building, bus stop as well. Would you recommend a certain area overy another???

Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Hi.. gonna be quick with this one (sorry).. 6 people is over capacity for a 1BR, and it would definitely be tight. You *could* try it and probably not get "caught", but it's more of an ethical "should you"..
All 1BRs come with 1 King and then the pullout couch.

No problem. You have it exactly right!
With the BWV and BCV you can walk to Epcot and MGM/take the boat. I liked staying at the WL cuz it really feels "Disney-Like/Magical" compared to other resorts I've stayed at, and taking the boat to MK is AWESOME.
I firmly believe you will get the reservation you want at the 11month window, no problem.

See I just see threads about my DVC and get all excited!!

2006!!! So far, so good, riu girl!!:) If we do have points left over this year, I'll rent them to you;)

Mousy, there are just king size beds in the 1bed:), and the sofabed in the livingroom is queen size....In a two bedroom unit, there is a second full bathroom with two queen beds:) There is lots of floor space in the living area...I'm just not sure if you would be issued room keys for everyone if you're over the 4 in a room...? (Occupancy limits are 4 in a one bed, plus one child under three...and there is always lots of discussion about it;))

OKW is a wonderful resort...we can't decide which we like better...BCV or OKW (we always stay at both;)) There is a sandy play area by the kid's pool..we always request a unit close to Hospitality House...any of the 60's buildings are great;) Refillable mugs are available..we've never bought them though. We just bring juice boxes from the room;) And the new slide is AWESOME!!:)

Hi All,

This thread has got my interest also.

I just returned last week from staying at ASMo and loved it :cloud9: .
I also did my annual tour of the other Disney resorts and was also thinking it would be nice to stay at either OKW or VWL. :cool1:

The one thing I would be concerned about is if a reservation is made in my name once I have paid a deposit, is it possible that the DVC member could then cancel and re-rent to someone else? :confused3

Also, how do you check that the individual actually "owns" the points that are being offered for rent.

I am hoping to be able to do DVC for my next trip, so the more info that comes up here the better. ::yes::

Thanks for starting this thread riu girl :wave2:

Great questions Carol. I would be very interested in hearing about the topics you brought up also. I would never have thought of these issues.

Another quick question about OKW - Is there a sandy beach of any sort?
Thanks,
Suzy

I don't think there is a sandy beach (www.allearsnet.com for pics and reviews).. the pool just got updated with a wicked sandcastle slide though.
I've never stayed there, but we decided to drive through OKW in February when we were down to check it out to see what the "feel" is like.
...in all honesty I don't think we'll stay at OKW anytime soon unless we're in a point crunch. When we drove around it seemed really REALLY nice; well spread out.. but it didn't feel that Disney-like (IMHO). It did feel like a nice condo-community. Look on the boards for the best buildings to be in, cuz some would be a loooonnnggg walk from the feature pool. We will stay at OKW sometime, but I think we'll go back to SSR (for some reason doesn't feel as spread out as OKW *yet*) or VWL first. ;)
