A Flu-Season Request

It's not by area. The FDA hasn't approved it for under 50 yet. As someone who has had shingles and under 50, I would have gladly boostered a chicken pox vaccine. It didn't kill me but it was terrible and I'm glad my children are protected from shingles and chicken pox even if I have to booster them!

Huh, maybe they should note that on the signs then. A friend of mine had shingles in her eye and omg, I never want anyone to suffer that type of horrific pain. She's still in tons of pain, 8months later.

Speaking as a father of a 5yr old with Cystic Fibrosis that will be visiting the week after Thanksgiving, I would appreciate any illness/germ/virus prevention my fellow visitors would be willing to attempt.

It is always amazing to me how many parents will take obviously sick kids to crowded play areas (dripping noses and uncovered sneezes and all). That is like a loaded gun for a kid with CF. However, we balance our princess's health concerns with a desire to allow her joy in life. That is why we feel the "risk" of Disney is worth the reward of her enjoying one of the planet's most amazing places.

Flu shots save lives. Vaccines save lives. Everyone has choices, but choices have consequences. Sometimes those consequences are not felt by the choice maker, rather those they merely pass on the street.

This is not a lecture to support either side of the argument, just a father who knows how precious good health days can be. Any step that can make those days more numerous is worth taking in my opinion.

Not all kids with sniffles and coughs are sick. My ODS has chronic sniffles and cough due to some plant that he is allergic to. We haven't figured it out yet but he definitely isn't illness sick.

That is true, and unfortunate. Just know that his mucous still caries bacteria that can be very harmful to kids with immunity disorders such as CF.

I'm not saying that you should do anything differently, but knowing to sneeze in his elbow or not wipe his hands on play equipment could help keep others kids from getting sick. The same bugs you and I carry in our bodies everyday can be seriously dangerous to many kids. Body fluids if any type contain many of these "harmless to us" bugs.

On the whole though, most kids with runny noses in December have a cold.

I understand, OP. I wish all people were more conscious about their coughing and sneezing, but not all are. I was looking at something at Fulton's General Store when we stayed at Port Orleans a couple weeks ago and this woman stops right beside me and sneezes. Loudly. And didn't even try to attempt to cover her nose/mouth. I held my breath and quickly walked away from her.

Then, one time when DD and I were sitting and waiting for a bus a man sitting on the next bench sneezed into his hand. No big deal about that. But, then he proceeded to blow his nose into his bare hand...twice!!! What the heck was he going to do with that?! Another lady talked to us about it on the bus, she (as we were!) was mortified that he did that. Have no idea what he did with his hand after he blew his nose into it, but it made us even more conscious about washing our hands often and not touching our faces.

Maybe the woman who was sneezing had allergies, and not something you can catch. She should have still attempted to sneeze into her arm, but as someone who has horrible allergies, sometimes a sneeze sneaks up on you.

Blowing your nose into your bare hands is just plain nasty. Geeze, if you are desperate at least find a leaf or something.

Yes, I was in shock when that woman turned and coughed into my face. I just didn't know that civilized people did that sort of thing.

My greatest lesson in hand-washing/hand sanitizer-ing came on the bus from MK one night. I watched the half-asleep man sitting next to me with his child on his lap pick his nose and drop whatever he got out of there on the ground for a solid 20 minutes all the way back to YC. Sometimes he WIPED IT ON HIS CHILD'S SHIRT. But mostly, he flung it on the ground. I was in shock watching him dig around and then swing his finger so the boogers went flying onto the floor of the bus. I was never so glad to get off a bus in my life.
