A few tips from an old lady

I've been going to DL for over 30 years; and through the years I have learned a few things, usually the hard way!
Just thought I would share...
1. Carry a change of clothes in your tote bag. If you spill a glob of salsa or ketchup on your shirt (been there, done that), you can duck into a restroom and change.
2. I carry a cheap pair of rubber flipflops in my bag and change into them before I go on Splash. Learned this the hard way too. My regular shoes are leather and one time on Splash they got soaking wet and still weren't dry the next morning -- yucky. (If you prop your feet up on the side rails inside the boat, your feet won't get so wet.)
3. Carry a small ziploc bag with a couple of bandaids and safety pins. Sure, you may be able to find these in DL if you need them, but do you want to spend time searching for a safety pin when your zipper breaks, or walk all the way to First Aid for a bandaid? I also carry an extra shoelace because one time my shoelace broke and I had to flop around DL the rest of the day.
4. If you have short hair and will not be wearing a hat, be sure to put sunscreen on the backs of your ears and along the part in your hair. I learned this the hard way too.
5. Carry a package of baby wipes. They're good for lots of things -- dirty hands, cleaning glasses, freshening your face, cleaning a dirty seat, etc.
6. Don't forget to tip your hotel maid daily, not at the end of your trip. You won't have the same maid every day.
I hope everyone who is going to DL this year will have a wonderful time.

Thanks. I LOVE tip threads. The flip-flop one is a must for the whole family... it works for water rides and any other shoe-related emergency.

Sun-block, right there with you. Small hairbrush too. We never go to DL without some kind of refillable water bottle(s). Sun/baseball hats are a must - if for no other reason than not going home with a burned part at the top of my head.

Disposable ponchos bought BEFORE leaving home for DL are also good. So many uses (rain protection, splash protection, blanket at F!, quick hiding place, etc.).

I've got younger children (they're getting older since joining DIS ::sigh::)) so I like to bring ring pops (or some similar novelty candy) for a surprise to make dear children happy in a crisis and they have the added benefit of "quieting" some situations, if you know what I mean. I've also started bringing light up dollar-store items for CA at night.

Thanks for the tips! Definitely will be using them when we go in May. Especially the flip flop one :)

Excellent idea with the Ring-Pops, thanks OnTheRoadAgain!

I picked up glow bracelets at the dollar store before our last trip...super fun and cheap for our evenings in the park.

And ditto to everyone else's tips too. And don't forget the lip balm!

Great tips!

I have a young child, so I always bring extra clothing - even for myself.
I also always pack empty ziploc bags (large and sandwich sizes) in the event of an accident, wet clothing or other mishaps.

And if, like me, you have curly hair that doesn't like humidity, make sure you bring a small bottle/squeeze tube of your go-to hair styling creme. It may sound vain, but you want the best possible pictures to choose from for the photo albums and frames - frizzy hair and Mickey don't mix, in my opinion.

AWESOME TIPS! I had to laugh cause I had to agree with the leather shoes one. First cause of the thought of having to prop your feet onto the rails of the boat. How uncomfortable, but you gotta do what you gotta do, and also that I have leather boots that are stupid comfy and I wore them onto Grizzly River Run. Lucky everyone put their purses and such into plastic bags and them covered my feet with them. My shoes never damaged one bit. Fewf! I never really thought about it until I jumped on the ride and someone mentioned it.

I don't like hauling any kind of bag around, so it's fanny pack for us. If it doesn't fit, it's not coming. So, travel size sunscreen and disposable rain ponchos are a must. Bandaids, and even better: Mole skin. Don't leave home without it!

For water durable footwear: keens.

Also in my fanny pack: camera and extra card and extra battery, chap stick, 2 granola bars, and wallet. Yes, it all fits. :)

If it's chilly, a hoodie that you can tie around your waist when it warms up.

And don't forget to wear your pedometer so at the end of the day when your feet feel like they are going to explode you can say "yes, we did walk 7 miles today!"

.

But...but...then however would I justify buying a new shirt? :rotfl2:

Oh please you are not an old lady, cause you started visiting Disneyland when you were 5, so you are only about 35 now, not old.... :) Anyway, thank you for the tips. Another good one would be if you are going to sit down somewhere and the seat is wet, but it is not a water ride, nor is it raining, then you might want to sit elsewhere.... he he.... no really.

good tips. I have fanny packs to, and this will be the first time with no stroller so we need to make all fit, we also have the Disney back pack that is like a cooler it self. I am hoping we dont over pack

I don't do fanny packs because mine does not need any embellishment. ;) no, really.

Definitely. I learned this the hard way too. When I was a kid my mom always made me put sunscreen on the backs of my ears and wear a hat if I was outdoors for long periods because I'm so fair skinned. I didn't do it one time while at a local amusement park and I paid the price. A scalp sunburn can take a really long time to go away and behind the ears is just...awful. Now I put sunscreen on every exposed area when I know I'll be getting prolonged sun exposure and I always wear a hat. Sunglasses too.

Great tips, thanks for posting! :thumbsup2

Great tips :)

I never go without a light weight spray jacket (can be used mornings and evenings when it is cooler but scrunch up to almost nothing during the warmer parts of the day. It can also be used if it rains or on wet rides, you can sit on it and you can also wrap wet items like clothing or drink bottles in it to keep everything else dry.

I also take a chapstick with sunscreen in it. You can use it on your lips but as its clear you can also put it on anywhere else sunscreen is needed in an emergency or if it turns out to be hotter than you expected.
