I will be arriving for FA on 5/19. There's still a few things I'm trying to figure out...

1. How much is renters insurance? I am for sure going to be getting this because basically, I will be moving down to Florida after the program is over and I'm taking everything I own. Including a few expensive things such as a nice TV, expensive desktop computer, ect...

2. How does the process of getting Florida residency work? I went to a campus presentation and they said that you can get Florida residency while on the CP but I don't really know how to go about doing it. I plan on finishing my college education in Florida because I want to be a marine biologist and I can't do that in Illinois, so I don't want to pay out of state tuition if I don't have to.

3. What are the chances of getting accepted for extending? I would like to extend through Spring advantage so I can "officially" be a resident for a year before I apply for school in Fall 2011.

Thats about it for now... If I have any more questions, I'll be sure to post them on here! Thanks!!!

I had to claim FL residency when I was down there last year doing a Professional Internship. If you google FL Drivers License, their info will pop up. I know when I had gone to get mine they were changing rules to where you HAD to have proof of where you were living in the form of I think a utility bill or cable bill that was in your name.

Last year when I got mine, I only had to have my BC and my SS card. They did tell me that starting this year you would have to provide 2 forms that you are living in FL. My name was not on our condo lease, utility bills, or cable/internet bill so I was lucky.

You might have an issue getting your license because everything just comes out of your rent when you are a CP. You could always call or stop by once you are down there.

One of my roommates was planning on finishing school in FL and it is true, you have to live there for a year before you apply for school if you want the in-state tuition.

Your chances of extension are pretty good. Just don't call off a ton and watch your record card..they take all those things into account.

Good Luck!!

We are from Illinois also and my daughter did the CP and then went back to FL to go to UCF. Becoming a FL resident in the eyes of the state is VERY different than being eligible for FL resident tuition rates. For the universities there is a 14 point checklist that you must go through before being able to be considered a FL resident for tuition purposes. In a nutshell though the first thing you MUST do is get your driver's license and registration changed to FL. That has to be in place a year before you can even mark off the rest of the list. Additional items include showing you are self sufficient and are in FL to work and not go to school (no living in dorms or even apartments that are considered campus housing). If you google FL state resident tuition requirements you should be able to find it. Here it is for UCF:

I'm not sure how it all works but I do know its hard my roommate from my CP program extended and then after she finished in Jan 2007 she stayed there and was still told fall 2009 that she doesn't make enough money to be considered a resident for tuition even thought shes lived there for almost 3 full years.. SO deff figure out all the rules right now so you know for sure what needs to be done.

School residency as someone said takes a year so get your DL and voter registration done ASAP. Those are two items that need to be filled in with dates along with the car registration.

One upside to living here in FL is we have no state income tax :D

Oh! And there are new requirements in pace for getting a DL here. It has to do with the Real ID. You basically need a ton of information. There's information on the DL site and this site which have checklists of all you need to have to get a DL.

I am not looking forward to the name change process next year after my wedding

Get your voter registration the minute you get your address. Then wait for it in the mail. Once you have it go to disney and say you need proof of your address in the form of a lease or some other notice (You may get this when you sign you contract not sure)then get that notice/lease noterized (banks often do it for free). Then take BOTH of those to the driver's license office (its not in the same place as the registry in Florida) and ask for a liscence. If you are young enough they don't push for you to have a utility bill as long as you have the noterized statement of where you live. Florida gives liscenses to drivers at 15... I can guarentee they don't have utility bills. Once you have both of these things you will be fine and the college will NORMALLY (check to make sure) date your residency to the earliest document (which will be voter registration). I go to college in Florida and this is how I did it.

Please look at the second link I posted, it has a checklist of what you need now. There is a lot more information needed than in the past. It's kind of crazy
