A few parking ???

Hi All,

My DS11 broke his leg and will still be on cruches when we go to florida in Sept. We have a temp handicap plackard for the car here in CT. How does that work renting a car in FL. Will we have to drop him off at the curp with an adult and then park the car or can we take ours from CT and use it in FL? (did that make sence?) Also if we do sea work or universal do they rent wheel chairs, he can't to distance with the cruches is just wears on his arms to much.

Welcome to disABILITIES

First of all Florida accepts all states handicap tags as valid, so you can bring his with you and use it.

Second is we would suggest renting a wheelchair from one of the off-site companies. See the FAQ near the top of the disABILITIES Index; it gives off-site rental information. They will be able to rent you a chair that would be correct for his size. It will be waiting for you at Bell Services at your resort when you arrive, and they will pick it up after you leave.

If he will be in a cast for the trip, you might want to have the person who puts it on draw a line with a marker where it will be sawn off. Then bring a "Sharpie" type marker pen with you and have the Characters sign the cast. Warn them when signing to not cross the line. After the cast is removed he will have an interesting souvenier.

You also might want to bring a couple of bungee cords to attach the crutches to the wheelchair.

As Cheshire Figment mentioned, for someone who needs to have a wheelchair, it makes a lot of sense to rent from one of the off-site places (listed in the FAQs at the top of the board). Sea World and Universal do rent wheelchairs, if you decide to rent day by day from parks.
In September, you should not have much trouble getting one at the parks, but the resorts are rather large and the walk from your room to the bus stop or your rental car can often be quite a hike. So having a wheelchair that you can use all the time, instead of just at the parks, is very helpful. Another thing to consider is the position of his leg. The wheelchairs rented from the parks are typically adult chairs with footplates that can't be adjusted much (if at all). If it is too low, his leg will be left hanging without support. Often people with casts need to elevate their leg to help with swelling. I don't think the park rental chairs have elevating footrests. You might want to talk to your doctor before you go to get recommendations about the type of wheelchair.

I broke my leg 10 days before my last trip and was also on crutches. I was able to do short distances, but it would have been very hard to even attempt to do any park on crutches. I rented a wheelchair at home (got a really good discount that made it worth bringing it on the plane with me) and took that everywhere with me. I would really say to have the chair since even in the least busiest of times, there are always people around that are not paying attention that could bump or knock the crutches out from under your son. I think it would help make the trip much more enjoyable for him and a lot less taxing as well. He should be able to transfer from the chair so riding most rides would not be a problem. There were a couple that I could absolutely not due since I knew I could not get in or out of the vehicle, but other than those select few, I was still able to enjoy most of the attractions, even with the cast and swelling and humidity.
