A fearless trip report- May 12-18th 2011

I'm glad Everett enjoyed his first ride! You will always remember the first one! Colby's first ride was Finding Nemo in Epcot. He loved it, too! This summer we got season passes to our little local amusement park. We have been there a couple times and Colby cries each time a ride is over!

Colby got his first haircut at Disney last year! They are WONDERFUL there! I hope you had a good experience, too!

First rides of the trip are always special! I am thinking about taking Everett to Hersey Park this summer, we'll see what happens.

Hopefully I'll get my haircut update done soon and you will find out ;)

The pictures of Everett and the characters at Crystal Palace are precious. I 'Awwwwwed' more than once when I was looking through them. :lovestruc

I'm glad you decided to just treasure the moment and spend more relaxing time with your friends. :thumbsup2

Thank you, Everett can be quite a charmer when he wants to be! I think eating more food was the best course of action too!

It's great that he slept through the night! It's nice that you got to enjoy breakfast. It really is hard to quiet that commando voice, isn't it?

I love an empty Main Street. We aren't usually breakfast TS people, so we've done CP, but not breakfast. (What was I thinking?) In January we did CRT as my 4 year old DS loves Princesses, and I just thought it would be neat to eat in the castle. It was good, and expensive, but I try not to look at how much things cost in Disney. I'd love to do it again, but mostly for the empty Main Street!

Yes, we aren't big breakfast buffet people either, but I really wanted the chance to take some special pictures. I haven't done CRT since the 80's, back when the joint was run by King Stephen. It is really pricey, and unless we end up with a princess at some point, I don't see us going back.

Episode 10: the update that includes a shave and a haircut- alright just a haircut

Well, shortly after I checked in they called our name, and we headed inside. It had cleared out a little because a HUGE group had just finished up. They were there for a 1st haircut, and they must have had a 15 person entourage, so it made me feel a litter better about the big group we were traveling with.

Miss Margaret was going to be the CM to give Everett his first haircut and she started with introductions. Everett was a little shy, but she was fabulous, talking to him, blowing him bubbles and making him feel very comfortable. I was able to peel him out of my arms and get him settled into the chair in no time.

DSC_0098.jpg

Here is where my one, tiny, complaint about the whole process comes into play, they don’t have a belt, or any other form of restraint for the chair. This might be OK when it comes to a normal child, but when your baby is a squirm master flash, like Everett, it always helps to have little extra security. Luckily I was able to keep him held down, but there were a few hairy (pun intended) moments.

Margaret started by offering Everett stickers, and he was delighted with peeling them off the paper and sticking them on himself and then onto Mommy. This kept him entertained for that first fateful snip- he didn’t even notice that anything was going on and I breathed a sigh of relief.

She proceeded to clip away, magically producing more distractions as soon as the previous one was getting old. She offered him a Minnie spinning toy, which was received with much enthusiasm, bubbles, and finally the most exciting thing of all, a water spray bottle.

there go his curls :sad1:

DSC_0105.jpg

Margaret good naturedly put up with DS’s spraying of water everywhere, it ended up on him, on her, on us, just about everywhere within a two foot radius. He was having a ball, squealing with laughter every time he squeezed the trigger.

DSC_0106.jpg

DSC_0109.jpg

Margaret was very good and very fast! There was one time DS’s lightning fast fingers darted up close to the scissors, and I was sure he was going to get snipped, but she pulled away just in time, telling us that it happens all the time, and she has gotten really fast.

I couldn’t believe my eyes through the whole process, my baby was positively turning into a little boy right in front of my eyes. I was a little sad to see his baby wispy hair trimmed. I was very fond of his sweet wispys, that would tickle my nose every time I kissed his head. He looked so grown up and like such a big boy, and he was acting like such a big boy too! No tears, no tantrums, just sitting there nicely playing with his spray bottle.

DSC_0116.jpg

When it was all finished he received a pair of first haircut Mickey ears (that he of course wouldn’t wear) and also a certificate stating that his first haircut took place on Main Street USA. It was a wonderful experience and such a special memory. I couldn’t imagine a better place for a first haircut! Margaret save a few precious baby curls for us to take home and also wrapped up a few extra stickers and pixie dust for my scrap book.

After we finished up and were waiting outside, the Move It, Shake It Celebrate It parade started right in front of us! We had an excellent view, and I would have taken pictures, but I was holding on to my toddler, who thought that he definitely had the right moves, and would have joined the parade if I wasn’t restraining him. I had seen it once before, but it was really cute, the characters all waved to Everett (since we were the first people they encountered), and he actually waved back, which I thought was super cute!

During this time I noticed that my Mom had disappeared somewhere, but we were trapped with the parade anyway, so I figured she’d find her way back.

Right before I was about to call her to find out her whereabouts, she appears from inside the Emporium carrying a bag. She had bought Everett one of the spray bottle fans, since he loved the spray bottle in the barber shop so much. I wasn’t exactly sure how I felt about Everett having the ability to spray us now for the entire vacation, but DS was over the moon with his new toy.

We headed back into the Emporuim, where it was quieter to call Bryan and Amy and the gang so we could meet back up again. Everett decided he would take charge.

DSC_0133.jpg

Well it was funny because as I was texting Bryan, I saw him standing right across the store, they were in the Emporium shopping too! We all got back together, and too some time to do a little shopping. My mother lives for shopping for Everett so she was in her glory, and Bryan and Amy are expecting their first child in Sept, so they wanted to buy some baby things also.

My mom picked up a set of Cars bath toys, and a pirate outfit and pirate Mickey PJs for Everett. Bryan and Amy bought their little boy-to-be the same pirate outfit and also a stuffed animal. My mom also came back with a starter pin lanyard and a tote bag, because they were the promotion with purchase, and she couldn’t decide between the two.

After all that retail therapy it was time to move on. We still had our Peter Pan fastpasses from the morning so we decided to take a trip to Neverland. I got out the Becco carrier for the line, because Everett really doesn’t like to be held, and he can’t be trusted to stand in line. Standing still is not Everett’s strong suit. It worked out really well that I wore the Becco on my back, and Everett would stay in it completely satisfied. There is no way we would have been able to stand in any lines otherwise. It also worked well because I could just park the stroller once, and use the becco to carry Everett around each area. I would still have to get Everett out of the carrier for each ride (because I was wearing him on my back, if I had him in front it would have been fine), but we got really quick at removing him.

I rode Peter Pan with Everett and my Mom and we had a fine time. Since it was so dark I had a hard time seeing Everett’s expression, but he seemed to enjoy it.

After Pan we once again were standing around Fantasyland, and I suggested Snow White. I knew that Shane wanted to get the audio for the ride for the podcast, and I wanted to be sure to ride it one last time before it meets its untimely end.

I actually took some pictures because I knew it would likely be my last time riding it.

DSC_0135.jpg

DSC_0138.jpg

Everett also really enjoyed Snow White, with the same wide-eyed wonder he displayed in It’s a Small World. I’m glad he got a chance to ride it, it will give him Disney geek street cred when he is older.

Once we were off Snow White, some members of our group were hungry for lunch. Everett was starting to get a little cranky, so I knew that nap time wasn’t too far off and I wanted to get him fed before he fell asleep in the stroller. Mark was hungry (as always), as were Bryan and Amy. Shane and Steve decided to skip lunch, and meet up with us afterwards for the Haunted Mansion.

I asked Amy where she wanted to eat, since pregnant women get the top choice when it comes to food, and she decided on Pecos Bills- excellent! It is a favorite of mine and I was looking forward to a burger. We said goodbye to Shane and Steve for the moment, and headed into the wild west for some grub.

Sounds like the haircut went really well, Margaret seems like a real gem when it comes to first haircuts!

So glad Everett's 1st haircut went well! :thumbsup2 Margaret did a very good job.

That is so funny about Barney! Everett has never seen Barney and I want to keep it that way as long as possible. I know it will be a losing battle once he starts pre-school, but I'd like to keep our house a Barney-free zone until then

Dh and I went to Universal a few years ago and had a great time. I'd like to get back soon because DH is a huge HP fan, but I don't think that Everett would have a great time. I don't remember there being a ton of things for little kids to do, but maybe that is because we spent all our time on the rollercoasters and ignored everything else.

Universal is great for kids around 3 years old who are into the Marvel characters. They have a huge water playground, with slides and toys, where your child can splash and play for hours. As for the Barney show which I have seen about 100 times. There is also a small rollercoaster, and they can meet curious George, scoobydoo, Madagascar, Sponge Bob, Dora. When your child reach this stage he will go crazy going there.
Island of Adventure has the Dr Seuss kids corner. I think that's beautifully done, it has a lot of fun rides for pre-schoolers.

I don't mind spending two days at US/IOA with my boys but after that it's back to Disney!!!! ;)

Everett looks very handsome with his new haircut :)

Aren't those Disney barbers fantastic! And they really are a lot faster than most other barbers we have been to. In fact, I just gave Colby his first haircut yesterday because I could not find anyplace I liked! It was not quite as nice as his Disney haircut, but it was free!

I'm glad you had a good experience!

The haircut looks great!

I wonder if the Peter pan thing may be due to a fear factor? I've hears Snow White described as being a scary ride for a toddler. Peter is still one of my almost 6 year olds favorites.

Awww! What a sweet memory to have his first haircut at the Magic Kingdom!

It is crazy how a haircut makes them look so grown up! My munchkin's is just a couple of months older than Everett (about 20 months) and my DH did the unthinkable last month- he buzzed his head! It is perfect for the summer and so much easier to wash (and actually it suits him perfectly), but he looks too grown up now!

I guess we've just been "lucky" (for lack of a better word). We have a 3 year old and he's been every year of his life and has not once stressed us out. Even at 2 years old he was a joy. We're going again in a few months (September) ... and I can't wait!

I love the idea of the first haircut at Disney! So special! And Everett did really well. It true does make a difference having a stylist who is experienced with kids. Oh and boys never grow out of their love for spray bottles ;)

The first hair cut seems like such a great experience! Seems like everything is going well so far. You are prepared for the worst, and you keep getting surprised!

Pecos Bills is a favorite of ours as well!

Episode 11: the update with some new happy haunts

Once we arrived in Frontierland, I left my mom and DH to park the stroller and order the food, and I went into to get us a seat and get Everett settled and eating. I was a little worried that Disney would be enforcing the “no seats until you have food” rule, but there was nothing in place to that effect.

Pecos Bills was an absolute Mob scene, and Everett and I hunted and hunted for a table. I found an abandoned high chair, and not wanting to potentially loose it, I dragged it behind me while we were on the hunt. I’m sure we were quite a sight, Everett on my hip and me dragging a high chair behind us, but a Mom’s got to do what a Mom’s got to do!

I soon saw a family getting up to leave and made a bee-line for the table. Whew, just in the nick of time, because another family was also descending like the vultures we are. I thought I was going to have to pull out my no-nonsense voice because the family actually looked like they were going to sit down anyway, but they eventually moved on, defeated.

I got Everett into the high chair with no major malfunctions and he was happily eating his peanut butter and jelly sandwich in no time. We were having a lot of trouble with Everett suddenly becoming a picky eater right before we left, so everyday I packed him a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, along with one of the Gerber yogurt blends (the kind that doesn’t need to be refrigerated- and no, I don’t know what is in them, I chose not to look at the label, ignorance is bliss), some graham crackers , dried fruit and raisins. These were all his tried and true favorites, so I figured he would at least get one good meal, even if he refused to eat any of the Disney kids meals.

We usually fed him his brown bag meal for lunch, because he is generally in a better mood and open to more adventurous eating at dinnertime.
This plan actually worked out great, because by the time that Mark and my Mom arrived with the food I had finished feeding Everett, and I was actually able to eat my food- WHILE IT WAS STILL HOT! It was like a Disney miracle. :worship:

Bryan and Amy also joined us after they received their food and we tucked in. I don’t usually take food pictures, so forgive me, but it was a pretty generic Disney burger. What I really love is the cheese sauce. Let me wax poetic about the cheese sauce for a minute- oh delicious cheesey/chemical goodness, I love your melty texture and your bright, not found in nature, orange hue, I could consume vats of your gloriousness, piping hot…

Anyway, enough of that.

Remember when they removed the cheese sauce *shudder* those were black days in our house…

Really, now back on track

DH knows my passion for melted cheese, so he brought plenty for me to consume with my fries and burger, he can be such a considerate husband.
Once we had all finished up Everett was teetering on the edge of meltdown land. I knew that he was really tired, and would fall asleep as soon as we got him in the stroller. My mom offered to walk around with him, which wasn’t really a sacrifice, because it meant that she could shop to her hearts content. :)

I got Everett all settled in the stroller and off they went, disappearing into Frontier Mercantile before I could even wave goodbye.

We sent a quick text off to Shane and Steve, and told them to meet us by Haunted Mansion because we were ready to take our chance with the happy haunts and I was dying to see the new queue. **Spoiler Alert** If you do not want to see pictures of the new queue, skip ahead now! I know that I didn’t read anything before we left because I wanted to see it all for the first time in person.

While we were waiting for Steve and Shane, Amy started to feel a little bad. I don’t think that lunch was settling right and she was getting heartburn. She had some problems with heartburn before, and decided that the best course of action was to go back to the resort and rest, so she would hopefully be feeling better for that evening.

I felt really bad that she was going, and offered that maybe we should all go back with her, but she refused. She insisted that we stay and have a good time, and if things got worse she would call us.

I still felt bad, but knowing that there was nothing I, or any of us, could do we got into line for Haunted Mansion. When we came up to where the line broke, we requested the interactive queue and we were sent to the left. If we had decided against seeing the new queue we could have walked right on, but being Disney nerds, we wanted to leave no (grave) stone unturned.

The first thing we came across were some of the new statues, they were very cool and all had their own epitaph a la the classic gravestones.

DSCN1783.jpg

DSCN1784.jpg

Speaking of which, I was really happy to see that the classic gravestone were still used throughout the queue, I was a little worried about that when I first heard that they had been removed. Once thing that does worry me though is that some of them are very close to the guests, close enough to be touched and possibly vandalized. I hate seeing where people have jammed gum into the wood carvings at Expedition Everest, I would be devastated to see gum on “Good Old Fred- A great big rock fell on his Head’s” grave stone.

Next up with a large crypt, that was very cool. If you touched the sides you could hear music playing, and as you came around the front it was modeled to look like a pipe organ. If you touched the keys of the pipe organ it would play, which I thought was endlessly entertaining!

DSCN1785.jpg

DH with Shane in the background

DSCN1786.jpg

Next up was the crypt of the mariner from the oil paintings that used to be in the hallway, before they changed them to the ones that transform with the lightning. I’m sure you all remember them, they were the ones that had the eyes that follow you. I think they can still be seen on the walls above where you enter your doombuggy.

The crypt was really cool because it leaked water, and you could hear the mariner talking.

Since DH is a navy man, I made him pose for the picture.

DSCN1787.jpg

After that we encountered the grave of Prudence Pock. It had modeled bookshelves on the sides, and if you pressed the books, they would pop out for the guest on the other side! It also featured a really neat interactive feature, where you could “help” Prudence write some new verses and get over her writers block. It was very clever, but hard to get a good photo, so you’ll all just have to go see for yourself.

DSCN1788.jpg

DSCN1790.jpg

Shane and Bryan trying out the books

Another really neat addition was the wedding ring embedded in the pavement. You all might remember the previous “wedding ring” that really was just a piece of an old pole. Well this one is legit, and I love to see the imgaineers pay homage to old traditions.

DSCN1793.jpg

They also expanded the graveyard up the hill, which looks super cool. It really adds depth to the whole graveyard scene.

DSCN1794.jpg

Once we explored the new queue, we entered the old classic attraction. There were a few surprises inside as well, because Disney installed the new next-gen hitchhiking ghosts. They are now interactive, and my ghost made my head explode! It was a neat new feature. I have to say that I LOVE all the changes that we made, Disney hit a home run!

After our adventures with the happy haunts, are group split up even more. Steve and Shane decided to head over to Animal Kingdom, and Bryan said that he’d join us on Space Mountain, but then was going to go home to be with Amy.

We said good-bye to Shane and Steve, and the three of us headed into Tomorrowland. I stopped to take some photos along the way

DSCN1795.jpg

If you look carefully I accidentally lined up the picture so that one of the light fixtures covers up the "O", so the sign just reads "DUMB". I'm sure thats the way some families feel after standing in line for an hour! :lmao:

DSCN1796.jpg

I really wish we had gotten to take Everett on the teacups, I think he would have loved spinning as fast as humanly possible

DSCN1797.jpg

DSCN1798.jpg

I love these palm trees...

DSCN1799.jpg

so much I made Bryan pose next to one with me

We had our fastpasses from earlier in the day, so we were able to get right on. I do love fastpass, but one day I want to wait in the standby line, both for Space Mountain and for Soarin’ so I can try out the games.

We had a little surprise when we got on Space Mountain, the lights were on in the tunnel for the TTA, so the interior of the mountain was partially illuminated. It was neat to see the track and everything, but it did really impact the theming. It was nice to do once, though, and gave me a stamp on my Disney geek card.

I did take a redneck photo of our Space Mountain experience. I can’t understand why they take the photo where they do, at the most interesting part of the ride. The next time I’m going to fake being all scared, at least then the picture would be a little more exciting.

DSCN1800.jpg

not the best redneck photo ever

After getting off Space Mountain Bryan was getting ready to leave, and Mark decided that he wanted to go back too. He had been battling a cold and wasn’t feeling so hot. He wanted to take a nap so he’d feel better for that night.

Before they left I made them stop with me and get Buzz fastpasses so I could ride with my mom and Everett later on in the day and then I was on my own. What to do next?

Sounds like the haircut went really well, Margaret seems like a real gem when it comes to first haircuts!

Yes, it went much better than I ever imagined

So glad Everett's 1st haircut went well! :thumbsup2 Margaret did a very good job.

I'd suggest requesting Margaret for anyone looking to get their child's hair cut!

I don't mind spending two days at US/IOA with my boys but after that it's back to Disney!!!! ;)

Good to know that there is all that stuff to do! We were not in kid mode at all when we last went, so I'm sure we didn't even notice. Since there is a chance we'll be moving back to Florida next June, I know we'll make it over to US/IOA, so we'll look forward to taking Everett to those places, just not the Barney show! ;)

Everett looks very handsome with his new haircut :)

Thank you, I think he looks like a little man!

They were amazing! I was joking with my DH that we've going to just have to take another trip in about a month, because I don't know where else to get his hair cut! Sounds perfect to me! :lmao:

The haircut looks great!

I wonder if the Peter pan thing may be due to a fear factor? I've hears Snow White described as being a scary ride for a toddler. Peter is still one of my almost 6 year olds favorites.

Maybe. I never understood what was so scary. I was the biggest scaredy cat as a child and still am as an adult and I never had a problem with Snow White, and that was when it was still "Snow White Scary Adventures"

I'm glad that your 6 year old still loves Peter Pan!

Yes, it really was special! :cloud9: How funny about your DH, you know, if Everett doesn't stop rubbing food in his hair, maybe I should consider a buzz cut!

I guess we've just been "lucky" (for lack of a better word). We have a 3 year old and he's been every year of his life and has not once stressed us out. Even at 2 years old he was a joy. We're going again in a few months (September) ... and I can't wait!

You are lucky! Your son must be very good- either that or you are very laid back- both which do not apply to me or Everett :rotfl:

I hope you guys have a great trip!

I love the idea of the first haircut at Disney! So special! And Everett did really well. It true does make a difference having a stylist who is experienced with kids. Oh and boys never grow out of their love for spray bottles ;)

It was wonderful! I think the stylists there see kids as the majority of their clients, so they get lots of practice! Well, he has his own spray bottle fan, so I'm glad to hear it will continue to bring him joy for years to come:laughing:

The first hair cut seems like such a great experience! Seems like everything is going well so far. You are prepared for the worst, and you keep getting surprised!

Pecos Bills is a favorite of ours as well!

I like to prepare for the worst, that way I'm mostly always happy with the outcome. I do sometimes get caught up in wanting everything to be perfect and wonderful all the time, just like a Disney commercial, but then I realize that I'm dealing with a real-life toddler, not an audioanamatronic!

I have been lurking but had to come to say I am really enjoying reading your trip reports. You are so funny and Everett is sooo cute. I love his "big boy" haircut.

Great update! I was thrilled to see all of the pics from the new queue at Haunted Mansion because I didn't get to experience it on our trip. I really wanted to go on Haunted Mansion since it's one of my favorite rides, but I figured Reid would not like it & would probably be in hysterics. Oh, and all that talk about cheese sauce at Pecos Bills has me hungry, thank you very much! :rotfl: Can't wait to see what you did next!
