A dream trip with a very bad ending -update 1-14-10 The nightmare has begun

ouch, glad everyone is back on the mend now, how scary. Please let us know what Disney's response is, I am curious to hear how they handle it.

We were driving through southern OK on Christmas day to see the in-laws and it was so bad by the time we hit the turner falls area- i counted at lest 55 cars abandoned on the side of the road in like a 10 mile span. scary!

:scared1:I knew that was where you were going! I absolutely fear bed bugs when we travel. I make DH check the mattress every time before I sleep on it. Praying that you and yours get better.

On a brighter note, I loved the report. How special to share Disney with friends.

Oh dear gosh that is just horrible. God bless you and yours. Hope you get better very soon. Let us know what Disney says please and make sure to take lots of pictures for your own self (not because I doubt Disney will do the wrong thing... but just in case the wrong person there does the wrong thing). You deserve a new vacation at the least.

Wow! As soon as you said that all of you had bumps/bites, I knew exactly what it was! When it was just you at first, I thought it was a spider bite, but once you said everyone was affected, I knew! I'm obsessed with Animal Planet and they have this show called "Monsters Inside Me" which is about parasites...it's quite gross, but very interesting and very educational!

I remember reading that about the bedbugs making a comeback in the US. I remember thinking "wow and we just got back from Disney! We're lucky we didn't have that problem!"

Just an FYI - I work for an insurance company and 99% of insurance companies cover you worldwide for urgent or emergent care. You probably could have gone to the ER in Florida (if you really wanted to and I know you weren't too keen on it anyway!) and it would have been paid as an in-network claim. :thumbsup2

It's funny because when you said that about the icee machines at Pop, I was like "wait! I was just there in October and there was no icee machine!" But then you said they were gone so I'm glad I'm not crazy but I'm sad I never got to use it!

Great TR and I'm glad that (bed bugs aside) you all got home safely!

Thank you all for the prayers, they are appreciated. I will let you know what Disney says. The guy handling our claim is named Walt, I thought that was interesting. He said it usaully takes about a week to get the results back so he should be getting back with us by tomorrow, so we will see.

We have a 5000 deduct on our Ins anyway, but ours pays 100% after that , but out of network even if its an emergency it only pays 80%. I know that because my husband had knee surgery last year and everything was in network except one Dr. that was at the hospital. So I got our policy out & read it again, there is a special clause that covers that.

When my daughter was young she had a seizure when we were in Hawaii, and they did cover it like it was in network so I thought this policy would too.
It does cover it more than actually being out of network just not as much as in network. Yes we have lousy insurance, but it is better than none.

When my daughter was young we owed hospitals in Hawaii, Missouri and Oklahoma. I think that was part of the reason I just really didn't want to go to the hospital in another state. I have been there done that, once in a liftime is enough.

However if I knew then what I know now, I would have given in and gone. I just never thought it could turn into something so horrible from a bite. That was a big reason I wanted to share it though, to keep someone else from going through it.

So Simba 22, do you have any ideas as to why the females had such a different reaction than the guys.Theirs went away on their own, which I think is pretty standard with the bites from what I have read. They are usually more of an annoyance than anything else.So why did we have such a bad reaction?

Well the park part of your trip sounded like all had a great time. Disney owes you big time, this could even lead to a lawsuit, not that I agree with suing for every little thing. This was expensive & your life was put at risk.:scared1:

Better check your luggage because there is a good chance that you brought the bugs home with you. The bugs are making a comeback because the only effective pesticide was outlawed.

Our insurance has been changed due to General Motors going bankrupt. It is like your's with a $7000 deductible & health insurance coverage canceled at age 65.

My DIL & GD live in Sand Springs,Ok.

I knew it was going to be something "creepy"!!

I am so very sorry that you experienced this on your vacation and especially sorry it happened at Disney. I too want to know why you had such a reaction. Was it an allergic response or what?

Glad you're on the mend and pray you recover completely!!

I'm now going to do research on bedbugs........................:scared1:

That was the one good thing about me going straight to the hospital. We did not bring our luggage in. It was in a car top carrier. My husband got online and read about what to do to kill them. He read it was earier too kill them with cold than heat. So since it was still freezing here he left our luggage outside for 3 days so they would freeze and then we took it to our shop to wash it. I was glad we found out before we brought it in or we probably would have them here. From what I have read it is very hard to get rid of them once you get them.

We live sw of Sand Springs out by Pretty Water. It is a small world.:)

Betcha all the girls developed a staph infection in the wounds. You scratched the bites, staph from under your fingernails got into the wound and set up an abscess which needed to be drained, in your case. And yes, you can die from a staph infection. Bed bug bites in and of themselves aren't a life-threatening event. They're annoying and itchy, much like a mosquito or a yellow fly.

This sounds very likely:surfweb:
In our 7 trips to WDW I have ended up in the emergency room twice:eek: Very good experience both times, I have never gone to the emergency room at home, never been sick enough. Good luck with your healing.:)

Wow! what a wicked eye opener. I have never had trouble like that anywhere, bu tI am so glad to be aware of it now, I think the matress enclosements specifically for bed bugs will be added to my list of things to pack for my next Disney trip, I have them for my pillow, but I always thought bed bugs were just a little nuisance and that really all the harm was that you breath in their little poop particles, which in itself is super gross that is why I got the pillow cases in the first place, but now to hear about how much damage these bugs can do to your body, I will take every precaution out there.

I am also going to mention this in my trip report, you are so right, people need to know, so I will help spread the word too.

Aside from all the trouble it sounds like you had a good time with your friends, staying out all night until the next morning! AWESOME! what a way to to do Disney.

I absolutley love Pop Century, I have only been to disney 3 times, but that is where I stay. It's so.....Disney.

I really enjoyed your TR, thank you so much for sharing. I hope your leg heals fast and without any further problems.

Wow! I have heard of bed bugs before and I have read reports of them at Disney but I had no idea that they would cause something like that. I just thought it would be some small bites. I sure hate that you had to go through that. Hopefully Disney will do something about it.

I've had bed bug bites from a hotel before and not had the reaction you did so I'd have to agree it was probably some sort of infection possibly Staph, but how horrible that happened to you. I'm interested to hear what Disney's response will be.

Thank you so much for your report. It was very informative. I think it is teaching me to be on the look out for these things. I too hold Disney to a high standard and would think that everything would be clean and up to par. You have taught me to look at everything in the room- good thorough inspection no matter where I am. Plus I know you didnt even think of anything bad happening especially at a deluxe resort.
I am very curious to know what they said. I am happy you are on the mend and were able to be healed at a "low cost."
Take care of yourself.

We have not heard from Disney Yet. I did get the 1st hospital bill though.
$22000 :scared1:

I will let you all know when I hear something.

Don't hold your breathe on hearing back from Disney. They are not going to take claim for the bugs. Unfortunately there is no proof either. You may get a free ticket. All the reading and talking to people Disney is pretty well protected in the legal land in Florida.

That may answer why I had red bumps on my legs one trip. They itched and hurt but nothing like yours.

I am going to put your TR in the completed board.
I don't want your thread to become a huge contriversial thread.
Let us know if you hear anything, and you can post a link to your thread.
Thanks for sharing the good and the bad, and I hope you are still healing well.
