...we have a winter storm "advisory" for up to 4 inches of snow today. Everyone on the east coast (probably even as far south as Georgia), stop laughing. No, really. Up to 4 inches of snow.

Of course, there's the chance that it might hit during rush hour and the city and the county can't even maintain the highways, so it leads to an all out panic. Every year.

I think I'll go home tonight (I took the bus today, thank you) and start packing during our SNOWPOCALYPSE!

Of course, there's the chance that it might hit during rush hour and the city and the county can't even maintain the highways, so it leads to an all out panic. Every year.

Well, we're too cold to get ice. But, I don't think ANYONE has a good way to deal with ice. I've only ever lived in the Great Frozen North and, regardless, when it's an ice storm... it's always hunker down and wait for it to melt.

(Random story time: we had an ice storm my freshman year of high school on the first day of midterm exams, so we were delayed two hours. It did melt quickly enough, but while waiting for the bus, we watched a three car accident and decided walking was safer. And faster. Probably was.)

But this is Michigan. Up to 4" of snow in a 6 hour period of time is worthy of panic? really?

We're under a warning for 12" of snow here. The last snow is still over two feet deep in many places, and frozen solid. There are still places that haven't been cleared. My walk to work is quite an adventure, since I have to walk down the middle of one of the major roads since the sidewalks aren't shoveled yet. Tonight's snow really isn't going to help matters very much, but I will probably get a snow day tomorrow! I'm taking a personal day on Friday because I have to go to a black-tie dinner for Jim's work that night, so if the weather is still bad Thursday morning I think I'll take that day off too. We're closed on Monday (Martin Luther King Day), so I could potentially have a six-day weekend! I could finish unpacking from the move, and continue packing for the cruise. Maybe I'll actually be ready for vacation soon!

I didn't realize you were Michigan. Thats not worthy of a panic at all!

we don't get snow days! The U believes that faculty and students live so close to campus that they walk (and they do), so we don't shut down. However. A lot of the faculty have young families. And the city does close shut the schools. And the staff "can't afford" to live in town. So the staff drives in... and spends the day running around campus hanging up "class canceled" signs for the faculty (who could walk but stay home to take care of their kids).

We've closed once and that was for that massive power outage back in 2003. We're oh-so-graciously given an extra hour to get to work in snowy weather. I take the bus. I take the usual bus (that in good weather gets me to work in time) and figure that's my safest bet. Relatively speaking, as I have been on buses that have spun out. (Ann Arbor DPW seems to put a priority on cleaning school parking lots rather than roads)

Southeast Michigan doesn't get a lot of snow so every storm is an adventure! We got just shy of 5" of snow on a Sunday and the main roads weren't cleared until Tuesday. The 5" of snow fell during the day on Sunday. (By main roads, I also mean "highways")

My thoughts are with all of you handling nasty weather. Portland rarely gets extreme weather and if a storm is even expected schools and businesses shut down! I'm originally from NYC and remember our first winter here: There was a dusting of snow and we all were told to stay home from work and school....compared to the 14 inches (!) NY got that year and nothing stopped....my mother told me their car was buried under a mound of snow for three weeks!

No snow day for me today. We had a two hour delayed opening, but I took a half of a sick day and came in after lunch. I spent the morning trying to organize my closet and start getting my vacation things ready! I'm tired of snow now. Even Jim, who used to want to move to Alaska, has had enough of winter for this year.

We started our countdown at 351 days. I can't believe it's almost finished! By the time I get back after vacation there will be another countdown for a cruise next December. We just can't decide which one!
