A Disney Dining Diva's Summer Surprise Dining Report -COSMIC RAY'S *COMPLETE* PAGE 8!

Great Reviews!!! We are considering DxDDP for Sept. cant wait to see what adrs yall make

So we realized we had a BUNCH of unused snack credits...and we were leaving the next day, so we'd better get to some snackin'! What better place to spend some snack credits than World Showcase?!

The first stop was Kringla Bakeri Og Kafe, the QS bakery in Norway.

We opted for an item we had never tried before (I saw it behind the glass and I swear it called my name), the Cloudberry Horn:
090504snack.jpg

Oh, my goodness, this was absolutely delicious. Faintly berry-ish and creamy, and the pastry so crispy and sweet. The cream itself was not all that sweet, so the sugar on the outside of the horn added just the right amount of sweet. We kept the knife in the photo for scale.

We couldn't decide between a sweet pretzel with almonds or chocolate, so we went with one of each (what the heck, we had the credits):
090505snack.jpg

090506snack.jpg

I actually prefer the one with almonds, even though I'm not really a big almonds fan. To tell you the truth, I could have lived without either of these, just bring on another of those cloudberry horn thingies!

Next we stopped at Karamell Kuche. Let me say that I could easily spend every single snack credit in this one place, but that is because caramel is totally my thing. It was hard to pick what to have, but we each had our own ideas, and we shared everything. I knew I had to get the caramel/marshmallow swirl:
090513snack.jpg

Scrumptiously chewy and rich without being ridiculously sweet.

Aladdin went for the shortbread cookie bar topped with caramel:
090512snack.jpg

Oh, my...soooooo buttery!

Hercules and Belle shared an caramel apple:
090511snack.jpg

Can you see how thickly that caramel is layered on that apple? So good!

I really wanted to try the caramel covered popcorn, but it wasn't fresh at that moment, so we figured we would come back later in the day and hope it would be freshly made at that time. Well we did get back there later in the day, and though the popcorn wasn't hot, I got a small bag of it anyway. I forgot to take a photo, but this stuff was absolutely amazing! Karamell Kuche is definitely at the top of must-do list for next trip...and we will have 2 snacks per day!!! I promise the biggest share of snacks will be spent here in Germany!

Up next... QS lunch in Epcot.

For lunch, Aladdin really wanted the Fish & Chips from the Yorkshire County Fish Shoppe, but the kids and I were in a different mood. We wanted to try something new, Le Boulangerie Patisserie in France! I tried to convince Aladdin that we should all stick together, that he should stay with us in France so he could taste our stuff and then we would all go over together to UK with him. But I think he was determined to save time (and maybe ensure that he would have his fish & chips all to himself ;)), so we split up.

The staff in La Patisserie was a bit rude. They were obviously put out that we didn't know exactly what we wanted when we stepped up to the counter...which, come to think of it, made it feel even more like we were in REAL France :lmao:. Once we got past the eyes rolling and the sneers, we had a delicious lunch!

You get quite a lot of food at this place, and what makes it so special is the dessert is a real pastry from the bakery. Belle and I both had these french bread pizzas (they have a name which will come to me but escapes me at the moment):

Hercules went for a ham and cheese on a french baguette. He can't remember what kind of cheese it was, but he thinks it was brie. The server asked if he preferred it as-is or hot, so he requested it hot:
090528lunch.jpg

090527lunch.jpg

All of these entrees were delicious!

For dessert, we ordered 3 different things so we could try multiple things. I got a Napoleon (my favorite kind of pastry) and Herc chose a creme brulee:
090526lunch.jpg

I prefer that thick black and white icing on my Napoleon. This one had powdered sugar, which was actually very good and a little lighter. It wasn't my favorite Napoleon ever, but delicious. The creme brulee was very good, perfectly prepared. IIRC, it had some fresh flecks of vanilla bean throughout.

The last dessert we tried (mostly Belle's) was the strawberry tart:
090530lunch.jpg

We loved this! Those strawberries were really thick and juicy, with just the right amount of creme inside the buttery crust. So good!

We were feeling really sorry for Aladdin at this point, because we knew he would have loved this lunch!

Here's a shot of his lunch:
090532lunch.jpg

He said it was OK. Not as good as he had remembered, a relatively small portion, and his dessert was good (one of those prepackaged shortbreads), but not compared to the scrumptiousness the rest of us experienced. Poor Aladdin! He would quickly forget his less-than-stellar lunch experience once we sat down to dinner...

Up next, dinner at La Hacienda de San Angel!

You are totally making me want to try all of these snack places around the World Showcase. I'm a caramel nut like you. And the Patisserie in France looks awesome. Can't wait to read the Hacienda de San Angel review. This is another one of those restaurants DW is begging to go to!

And thanks for your comments re: the Wave. I totally agree that what makes a Disney restaurant special is the whole experience. DW and I can go to plenty of good restaurants in Philly, just like you have available in NYC. But at most of those places, if we took three small kids there, a lot of people would look at us cross-eyed. At Disney, all the food tastes so much better because you can feel comfortable enjoying it with the whole family, and most Disney restaurants have that special theme/atmosphere that just makes the dinner so much more enjoyable. Like Biergarten, if I got that food at a normal restaurant in Pennsylvania, it would probably just feel average. But the whole Disney experience makes it better. I think that's why the Wave has never drawn me in. While it may be a good restaurant if you're staying at the Contemporary, I wouldn't go out of my way for it.

Anyway, keep up the good reviews!

Oh wow those snacks look great :goodvibes
It's such a shame that the fish and chip shop serves a pre-packaged shortbread for dessert, I am sure that they could come up with something better than that to represent the UK!

Just experienced Monk's mussels in Philly for the first time this year. What a great restaurant, and great sour Flemish ale! mmmm

That must be mental telepathy. I haven't eaten at Monk's yet, but a buddy of mine just invited me to Monk's today. Gotta try it!

Thanks for the encouragement to continue...almost finished now. I agree that everything tastes better at Disney. There's something so special about mac and cheese or a pretzel or an ice cream bar that's shaped like mickey! Absolutely go to Karamell Kuche. Most of the snacks are rich enough to share, so you don't have to use up many credits to get the pleasure. We were pleasantly surprised by La Boulangerie Patisserie. In all of our trips, even on or off the dining plan, it just never occured to us to have lunch there. Well, it was wonderful, and a great use of the credit!

Between The Wave and La Hacienda, we would definitely far prefer La Hacienda! We had a fabulous meal there (description will follow soon), and also a gorgeous view! Plus, where else can you get an avocaco margarita?! Well, NOT The Wave!

Yes, Linda the snacks were amazing! The best IMO was the caramel popcorn, which I neglected to photograph. ITA about the shortbread! I could see us ordering a fish & chips from Yorkshire at some point to share as a snack, but we probably won't make a meal out of it again. There are too many other interesting things to do in WS.

You've sold me on trying the Cloudberry Horn. I'm stuck on the spoon bread but that looks yummy.

You have to try it at least once!! I've never tried the spoon bread, though, now I'm curious!

Just ate at Monk's yesterday. Best ... mussels ... ever!

Better than Flying Fish?! Oh, MSF better be taking his wifey on a road trip to Philly soon...Note iloveeeyore was not present when MainStreetFireman had the pleasure of dining at Monk's.

Trying not to hijack my DW's thread, but... "I know, right?" What a value, too.

When are we going? No "hijack" noted. This thread is about good food...new great food that I am about to try soon, apparently! ;)

Our last dinner in the World :sad2:, and we decided on La Hacienda. Our server was Estephania, and she was adorable and sweet and helpul in every way. We had a table several rows up from the windows but elevated enough that we had quite a lovely view of the lagoon and most of IllumiNations (we only couldn't see the very highest of the fireworks.

For drinks, Aladdin and I knew we were going with the specialties of the house, margaritas from La Cava. The question was, WHICH margaritas? I had a really hard time deciding between the tried and true or going with something new, and after much discussion with Aladdin, who was quite committed to helping me out with my dilemma, I went with the tried and true: the Avocado Margarita:
090545dinner.jpg

What can I say about this? It is simply delicious! Smooth and creamy and not-too-sweet with a vague taste/texture of banana? I am unable to detect any essence of avocado in this, but whatever, I just love it...again!

Aladdin went with the Margarita Flight (so he could let me try another 5):
090543dinner.jpg

Now, don't be thinking "aw how sweet and selfless of Aladdin" (which actually, he TOTALLY IS, except he hasn't taken me to Monk's yet, LOL). He had some personal interest in this as well ;)! These were all delicious, though I can't really remember at this point what all the flavors were. I think there was a cactus and a pomegranate, but sorry. Again, I promise to take notes next time!

We ordered a Queso Fundido for an appetizer to share:
090544dinner.jpg

I have seen some bad reviews on this and I guess sometimes it is served cold and congealed? Well, this serving was absolutely perfect, with just the right degree of meltedness and also the right amount of spice from the chorizo garnish. This was served with warm flour tortillas, enough for each of us to have at least 1? Maybe even 2?

The chips were delicious, fresh and crisp with just the right amount of salt, and the free salsas were delicious as well. We kept asking for more salsas and applying them to out meats later in the meal. Here is a shot of the chips basket with the sauces on the side (spicy tomato salsa and salsa verde):
090546dinner.jpg

Belle ordered the Pollo al Pastor:
090547dinner.jpg

She said that it was very, very good, a lot better than she thought it would be!

Herc went with the Arrachera (steak) cooked medium rare:
090548dinner.jpg

There was nothing left on the plate.

This is one of the few dinners where I seriously cannot remember trying the kids' food. I'm not sure if it was all the margaritas or if I was just to busy and overwhelmed with my own food to bother with theirs! Aladdin and I went with one of the house specialty platters for 2, the Parillada Hacienda:
090549dinner.jpg

This was a HUGE amount of well seasoned chicken, steak with chimichurri, spicy chorizo, grilled veggies and corn with queso blanco. It was served with rice:
090550dinner.jpg

And beans:
090551dinner.jpg

Everything was just delicious! I was surprised at how moist and flavorful the chicken was (I usally find chicken pretty boring). I think the steak was my favorite. It was way too much food, and even Aladdin and I with our big appetites couldn't come close to finishing it!

Far be it from us NOT to order dessert!

Herc went for ice cream:
090554dinner.jpg

It was garnished with crispy churros and delicious caramel...and it was a hidden Mickey!

Aladdin went with the Chocolate Natilla:
090552dinner.jpg

Aladdin is obsessed with natilla. Our favorite Mexican place at home used to serve this, but they took it off the menu several years ago. Whenever we eat Mexican, he asks if they have this. He was so excited when he saw this on the menu, but it wasn't what he expected. He said it was more like flan than natilla, and he described it as "OK." I suppose that natilla is one of those things that can vary from region to region, and this was just not his favorite version.

I ordered the Empanada Manzana:
090553dinner.jpg

Again, this was not what I was expecting. This was like those apple pastries they serve is all the Disney bakeries, and not at all like a typical "empanada" that I have had elsewhere. Also, it wasn't hot. Disappointing.

Belle ordered the Tamal de Dulce:
090555dinner.jpg

She said that this was good, maybe a tortilla wrapping some cheesecake type filling with strawberry sauce? Like a blintz? Neither of us can really remember. ETA: It came back to me. This was a corn cake! Belle still thinks that maybe it had some kind of filling in it, but IIRC, it was similar to a very moist corn muffin with sauce on it.

So in short, dessert was definitely the weakest course of this meal, but honestly, we didn't need it anyway. We were stuffed to the gills from delicious (filling) drinks, chips and salsa, queso fundido and all those yummy entrees! Now that I think about it, the desserts might have been great, but we just couldn't enjoy them because we were way too full!

I have one brief lunch review left (no pictures, sorry) for Cosmic Rays, and that will wrap up this DR. And I'll give you a sneak, exclusive preview of the restaurants that will be reviewed in my next report in August! Thanks everyone for sticking with me!

Great to see such a positive review of La Hacienda
At the moment our plan is to have dinner there on our last night; I think you may have just sealed the deal with the words 'Margarita Flight'

Yes, we loved La Hacienda and actually had a bit of a tough time NOT putting it on our plans for our next trip. I know that with the DxDP, we won't have enough time, or room in our bellies, for a side stop at La Cava, so I was trying to figure out how we could get some of those margaritas!! There's always a chance of a spontaneous stop, but not likely, we're thinking.

Just one word of warning about the Flight. In summer 2010, we visited La Cava on a weekend, (maybe a Saturday?) and we tried to order a Margarita Flight. We were told at that time "We don't make Margarita Flights on weekends." This night we dined at La Hacienda was a Monday, but it was also a holiday weekend (Labor Day). So I'm not sure if they changed their policy about no flight on weekends, or if they just don't care about Labor Day. If the flight is important to you (which if you're a margarita lover I suggest it should be; it is EPIC), I would plan to visit Epcot on at least one weekday, or do lots of research to make sure it's now available every day of the week.

Enjoy!

Something tells me that we will make time to stop at La Cava. :cool1: Just sayin...

Great Hacienda review! Never been there. Now I've got to fit this restaurant in on the next trip!

Right on! There's an avocado margarita and a flight waiting for us! In fact, our first park day will be in Epcot! We can kick off the celebration at La Cava!

Great Hacienda review! Never been there. Now I've got to fit this restaurant in on the next trip!

Thank you! Yes, I would recommend giving it a try. We had a great experience and would definitely return.

Sorry I have delayed my final entry for so long, friends! I haven't been able to locate my photos from this day, so I was thinking about abandoning this report...but I do have some thoughts to share and I'm looking forward to starting my new Pre-trip DR, which I hope you will follow!

On our last day, we have been booking latest possible flights out so we can enjoy some time in the MK through lunch. Our last lunch on this trip was at Cosmic Rays, which we have tried once before and loved. We ordered deluxe burgers with fries, and for dessert here we decided to try the chocolate gelato(2) and mango sorbet (2).

Let me tell you, the burgers were served quickly, were hot, juicy and delicious, the fixin's bar was well-stocked (no problem finding mushrooms, here), and we unanimously agreed that the desserts were the best CS desserts of the trip. Sorry, Pecos Bill's, but if we find ourselves in MK wanting CS burgers again anytime soon, we would definitely go out of our way for Cosmic Ray's! I know, I know, it's probably the same exact burgers and buns! But the service, cleanliness, fixin's bar and desserts were far superior at Cosmic Ray's. And this was the second trip in a row that we found this to be the case. (Well, except for the desserts, which were new this trip..oh, how I would love to have one of those mango things right now!) This actually makes us a little sad, as we consider ourselves more of a Frontierland kind of family than a Tomorrowland kind of family, so we WANT to prefer PB's...we just don't! And since this was our departure day, we expected not to like anything (felt a bit in a funk), but CR's really made the cut!

Coming up...final thoughts.

I can't imagine ever finding any vacation value better for 2 adults and 2 teenagers than 7 nights at CSR on the FREE Disney Dining Plan, can you?! We had a phenomenal time and enjoyed some fabulous meals! The cost of our package (pre-airfare) was right around $2700 for 7 nights and 8 days, and included all of our meals. Fantastic! CSR was a great moderate choice, the pool was wonderful and transportation wasw outstanding!

Biggest happy surprise: Biergarten! We LOVED this place for lunch and cannot wait to return in August! We now consider this our favorite buffet in WDW! (I might like Boma slightly better, but the rest of the family would score Biergarten higher, so it takes the overall award).

Best sit-down (non-buffet) restaurant of the trip: La Hacienda! We were pleasantly surprised by this place and would love to return, despite the anticlimactic desserts...oh, the MARGARITAS!

Best overall dining experience: HDDR! (of course, it remains our favorite), followed by Raglan Road (I just won't order the chowder next time, it's yucky!).

Biggest disappointment: Peco's Bills (it wasn't terrible, but Cosmic Ray's was much better for pretty much the same stuff) followed by The Wave, which was just way too inconsistent food-wise with a bleh atmosphere for us. And the Nachos at Pepper Market with their fake cheese sauce (there's a time and place for fake cheese sauce, and this is not it, IMO).

Thank you, readers, for following along with my DR! I'm happy that you stuck with me, and my sincere hope is that you will join my family on our next adventure: "Magic Happens...and then you EAT: Our Gluttonous Celebration of the Year of the Dragon!" (Coming up soon to the Dining Reviews Board!)

Adios!
