Sierra, I just wanted to say it was great to meet you at the Podcast taping. Even if I briefly couldn't remember your real name due to the overall lack of sleep.

Cool meeting you too.
At least you had an excuse for forgetting names lol.

I found the readers!!!!

I don't know if it's Central Florida in general or just the office I work in-but I'm the ONLY person who reads for pleasure there. I was starving for people to talk books with and to my JOY I stumbled on a conversation at DAP about two of my favorite novels of all time-Pillars of the Earth and World Without End. Kevin pointed me toward the thread and I am thrilled to be here!!

I'm currently reading Stephen King's latest-Under the Dome. Alas, Kevin informs me that Uncle Stevie is being mean to the Kindle owners and it's not available to you guys yet. It starts slow, I'll admit. I was kind of half interested until I passed a point this weekend where it took off like a rocket and I couldn't put the thing down! I've got shopping and wrapping and all sorts of Christmas cheer to finish...and all I want to do now is finish it!!

Now I must page back through the thread to find more books for my reading list.....

Hey everyone,

I finished Twilight a few weeks ago, it was good, but I wasn't as bonkers about it as others seem to be. It was such a fast read since it is aimed at the tween reader level. I'll still read the rest of the series when I get a chance probably.

Right now I am reading The Glass Castle by Jeanette Walls and so far it is really really good! I am going though it fast so next up will be The Help- I think someone else mentioned they read that one earlier- I have heard good things! I have so many books to get to because of this thread!

I just finished listening to the podcast from Disapalooza. I was so excited that Kevin gave someone a Kindle...and an Oberon cover!!! I hope they realize what an awesome gift that is. I've been drooling over the Oberon covers ever since I got my Kindle. The are just beautiful!!!

Right now I am reading The Christmas Bus. It was a free download for the Kindle (not free anymore). I'd describe it as holiday fluff. It's short, so I should be done with it later tonight. Not sure what I will read next, but it will probably be one more holiday book and then I'll get back to normal books.

I will let Christy come and tell you allwhat Oberon cover she's picked.

Her Kindle and her cover are on their way.

I've just begunMy Life in France by Julia Child.

I'll let you know how it goes.

I was trying to read a novel called Sag Harbor.

Have you ever read anything by an author where it seemed that they just wanted to prove that knew ALOT of words.

This was the case with Sag Harbor.

I really enjoyed My Life in France :)
I just finished a Sherlock Holmes book and enjoyed it much more than I thought I would. I got it as a free download from Project Gutenberg.
If you have a Kindle I highly recommend getting the Magic Catalog for Project Gutenberg. It is a catalog of free classic ebooks. You download the catalog onto your Kindle where it will appear as a book on your home page.
From the home page click on the catalog and then you can either browse or search the catalog right from your Kindle. When you find a book you want just make sure the Whispernet is turned on and click on the book. It will download the book right onto the Kindle without having to download from your computer.
To download the catalog on your Kindle just google the magic catalog for project gutenberg...you will be able to find an address to type into your Kindle whispernet browser, download it and you are ready to shop for free.
When I find a classic book on Amazon that I am interested in that costs a dollar or two, I search on my catalog and most of the time I can download for free. The formatting is usually pretty good too.
If you have any questions I can try to help so feel free to PM me. :flower3:

I'd love to hear which Oberon she chose. Which one do you have Kevin?

The title "Sag Harbor" sounds familiar. Who was it written by? It sounds like it might be one of those books that I bought (pre-Kindle) and never finished reading...I have quite a few of those around here.

Thanks for the info! I will definitely try that out. I bought my Kindle in July but so far have only gotten books off of the Amazon site. I tried one time to download Calibre so that I could get books from other sites and convert them, but I never could get it figured out...I'm usually not technology-challenged, so I'm not sure what the problem was.

BTW-it's going to be a very Kindle Christmas at our house. My oldest daughter is buying one for her husband, and I'm buying one for my youngest daughter for her birthday (Christmas Eve)! They are going to be so excited! They've both wanted one ever since I got mine.

I have the Hokusai Wave in Navy and while I would love another....this is my favorite.

I also love the Avenue of Trees design. Gorgeous stuff.

Sag Harbor is about a young black kid coming of age on Long Island in the mid 80's and the 80's cultural references are great.

The book is written by Colcon Whitehead and in my opinion, he tries too hard to use as many words as possible and to be too clever in describing mundane things.

I'll go back to it eventually...I just wasnt in the nood for something that I had to work at that hard.

I've been so swamped with Christmas sales that I've been AWOL on the thread for awhile, but am trying to catch up tonight! I've been downloading the Shopaholic series by Sophie Kinsella onto my Kindle - I read them years ago then sold the books to clear out some clutter in the house, so I'm glad to get them back with the Kindle. Not intellectual reading, for sure, but I needed something light and easy this month!

I just bought Wally Lamb's Christmas book, "Wishin' and Hopin': A Christmas Story". I bought the actual book rather than the Kindle as I love Lamb's books and wanted it in hardcover. Hopefully I can get it read before Christmas!

Anyone read Rocket Men by Craig Nelson? It looks good and I was thinking of getting it for the Kindle.

I am reading (really, I am reading it aloud to my partner) Make Room! Make Room! by Harry Harrison.

The book was written in 1966. The movie Soylent Green (1973) was sort of based on the book.

What happens when there are truly too many people on earth?
It is interesting to read what an author thought in 1966 about the overpopution problem in the future. Read it and see how close his "predictions" compare to today.

Ok, I read The Lost Symbol.

Is it just me, or is anyone else tired of Dan Brown's formulaic plots? I was starting to roll my eyes at every new "reveal". I really enjoyed The DaVinci Code, but I am starting to feel that he's a one-trick pony when it comes to writing.

Am I the only one who feels that I'm reading the same book over and over again when I'm reading Dan Brown? Please tell me I'm not.

My library patrons have not been happy with Lost Symbol.

However, they are waiting in line to borrow Angels and Demons DVD. That is getting better reviews.
(sorry, I know this discussion is for books, not films. But the film was from a book!)

Hi Lori,
No you are not alone. I was really looking forward to The Lost Symbol coming out, I even bought it in hardback, which is a rarity for me. While I enjoyed parts of it very much, I wasn't surprised to feel let down by the ending.
