A DISers Book Club!

Just finished a GREAT book!!! and had to run right over here and share it....it is The House at Riverton:A Novel. Set in the 1920s, it is an AMAZING story that I couldn't put down, and was sad to see end...not to mention that I got very attached to the characters and was very invested in the story...this isn't the type of story I typically read, but it was AMAZING!! and not at all what I thought it might be like from seeing the cover and reading the description...

The Christmas Bus was pretty good. Were you able to get it when it was free? I won't say that it was the best book I ever read, but it was much better than some of the other free books I've downloaded to my Kindle. So far my favorite Free book is Raising Jake, except that I don't think it is free anymore.

I did! Gotta love free books. Raising Jake was awesome.
Kevin, what was the name of the World's Fair book you mentioned on the Podcast? White something? It sounded really good.

The Devil in the White City: A Saga of Magic and Murder at the Fair that Changed America by Erik Larson

Just finished listeing to 3 books by John Hart. I read his last one first called The Last Child and enjoyed it so mych I got his other books. The King of Lies and Down River. All really good books.

I picked up Water for Elephants at the library Saturday midday and finished it later that night. What an engrossing story! Sara Gruen really paints word pictures. There's no better term I can think of to describe it.

I loved that book!!!! Thought it was fantastic and so hard to put down!

Just finished "Lamb" by Christopher Moore. Very funny! I can't wait to read more of his.

Love him! His sense of humor is great :thumbsup2

Hi - I just finished reading Steven King's The Shining and I am looking to read another. I have a question for those of you who are Steven King fans what is your favorite King book and why?

TIA!!

I LOVED the Stand :thumbsup2 and The Langoliers is a fave of my also.

Disney is now selling this in all of the theme parks and Downtown Disney locations. I am not sure if it is from Hyperion or not, but am assuming it is. I hadn't heard of it until I was there a few weeks back. I almost picked it up, but knew I'd get my teacher discount if I waited until I got home. I might pick it up, but am not running out to buy it in a rush. I thought it was a blatant rip off of Wicked , too.

Ohhh thanks for sharing. I will have to look for it when we are down there next month!

I have listened to several from #1 Ladies Detective Agency series by Alexander McCall Smith. I am not a mystery fan. This is about a detective and I really enjoyed the little bits of real life problems and how she solves them.

I love the books and the TV show :thumbsup2

Been awhile since I've been able to post. Was in the World for 2 and half weeks and just getting caught up with reading. Finally got around to reading The Lost Symbol, have to agree with most of the others here, was okay, wasn't what I expected, especially since I was so into Angels and Demons, and The Davinci Code. Not great, not bad. While in Disney I picked up Charles Ridgeway's book, "Spinning Disney's World", very interesting read, great first hand account of the Disney parks, I recommend it any Disney fan. I just finished a great holiday book Wishin and Hoping by Wally Lamb. Just picked up Bite Me by Christoper Moore, read A Dirty Job previously and really enjoyed so looking forward to this one.

About half way through Water for Elephants and I'm loving every word.

Truly enjoying this one.

Finished "Under the Dome" (Stephen King) yesterday. It was pretty dull, actually. Maybe I've lost my taste for S. King, but it just didn't catch and hold me. "People are stupid and mean" was pretty much all I got out of it.

Oh I am sorry to hear that :guilty: I was hoping for a hit with this one. I will probably still read it , waiting for paperback though. Too cheap to buy the hardback ;)

I'm big on downloading audiobooks since I don't get much sitting time...

Just downloaded "Blind Side", the story of Michael Oher that the movie is based on. If you have any interest in football you'll probably enjoy it....Michael isn't really the basis of the book so far (I'm about half way through),more the development of the sport.

Also started Howie Mandel's "Here's the Deal: Don't touch Me" and am loving it so far! It's a treat to listen to since he sometimes speaks to the listener aside from what he's written..."okay, listener, this part isn't in the book but...."," I hope you didn't download any other books...." :rotfl:

I still haven't started The Lost Symbol yet. I tore through The DaVinci Code, but I will see if I feel the same as the general consensus here about this book. I have read other Dan Brown books, and I do feel that some are stronger than others, as well.

I don't know if you finished it yet, but I think you'll love the ending. :goodvibes

Ok, finished two books this weekend. They aren't your usual books, but I figured people might want to know.

- Lou Mongello's The Walt Disney World trivia book : secrets, history, and fun facts behind the magic

Interesting light read. While I felt that 2/3 of the trivia was either something I already knew or something nobody would care about, I did have fun with it. I didn't like the format, though. Is anyone really quizzing themselves on this?

- Bon Jovi : When We Were Beautiful

This is the companion book to the DVD documentary about Bon Jovi. A bunch of nice pictures, but the read is all about the musings of the band about their career and their relationship with each other. Only for the die hard Bon Jovi fan.

These books go back to the library in the morning. Up next: Betrayal : France, the Arabs, and the Jews, by David Pryce-Jones. (I know, not the usual genre that shows up here in the "club.")

I haven't been keeping up with this thread, so I apologize if this is old news, but I thought Kevin (and some of the rest of you) would like to know that they're making a mini-series of Pillars of the Earth.

Here's a link to the story on MSN about it.

It's supposed to air in June 2010 - plenty of time to do a re-read first!

Also -- I'm pretty sure I'm getting a Kindle for Christmas!

I didn't know about it. Thanks for sharing :) I haven't read the books but this might motivate me to try and sink into them.

OMG this is really some book. I had to read it for an English class. So very 'different'.

Cider House Rules is another great book.
Also some kids books, but a great read too are the Lois Lowry books (The Giver, The Messenger and Gathering Blue). I often preread so I can discuss books with my kids.
