A Different Tux Question

There have been several threads recently about the need/advisability of renting or buying a tux, or just opting for a suit. I have a slightly different question.

I have already decided to rent a tux for an upcoming cruise on the Magic, and will certainly wear it on formal night. The rental package includes two shirts, so to get more mileage out of my rental, I will also wear it a second night. What would be the better choice, semi-formal night or my Palo dinner? (I've already booked Palo online, and my reservation is not on formal or semi-formal night.) I'm guessing that a tux might be a bit much for semi-formal night, so I'm leaning towards Palo, but in various previous threads I've read that tuxes are not necessarily particularly common in Palo either.

So, for those who have worn tuxes on the Magic before (or plan to, or just have an opinion ), which nights did you wear them:

1. Just formal night
2. Formal and semi-formal night
3. Formal and Palo
4. All three nights!

Depends. If you want to pack a suit for semi formal, then only on Formal. If you don't want to pack that suit, then do both formal and semi formal. I would not do Palo. JMO

I thought people were surprisingly informal in Palo (this was our first cruise). My husband and another gentleman in our party wore dress pants and sport coats. I think they were wearing the only ties in the restaurant. I have to admit that I rarely study what others are wearing but a tux would have stood out in the room (unless that would be a plus for you. <g>) In fact, the man at the table behind us was wearing a Tommy Bahama shirt, which I noticed for two reasons: One, it had Tommy Bahama's name prominently displayed on the back when I knew the Disney guidelines had specifically suggested "no Tommy Bahama type shirts". Two, it was directly in my line of sight over my friend's shoulder. Still, even with that "horrible" breach of the suggested dress code, I had a great time and my food still tasted wonderful.

If my DH was asking this question, I'd suggest wearing the tux on formal and semi-formal nights. Palo is also a time-intensive experience (we were there over two hours) and a tux may not be the most comfortable option then.

My DH always wears his tux on Semi formal and Formal nights. He wears a suit to Palo.

My DH and I cruise a lot both Disney and other ships. This is what we did:

When my boys were small ages 3 and 5, I bought them sailor suits to wear. They were the hit of the ship and looked beautiful in the pictues with us. (I got them in a children's shop and they were not expensive at all, I really lucked out.)

When we went and they were about 8 and 10, I had them wear long pants, a dress shirt, a vest and "bow ties" They looked very nice.

When we went and they were about 14 and 12, I had them in slacks and a jacket.

Last year when they were 14 and 16, I rented them tux. They didn't have any jackets that fit, I knew they wouldn't be worn again so I didn't want to just waste the money and I have beautiful pictures of them us dressed up. Probably something I won't see again of the 4 of us until one of them get married.

Personally, I see no problem with children under 5/6 dressed in dress shorts for formal night if they are dress shorts, and not something they'd wear to play.

As they get older a nice pair of pants and a top and tie.

As they grow into teens, I feel it's important to dress them properly in some type of slacks, pants, shirt, tie so that they learn the proper way to dress for different situations.

My dh wears his tux on both formal night and semi-formal night. I suggest you wear the tux to Palo also, then you wouldn't have to pack a suit. You can send out one of the shirts for cleaning. The cost is nominal. HTH

On our 7-night, we saw only 2 little boys in tuxes. The only reason we really noticed them at all, though, was because they spent the next two hours acting as the elevator "hosts"...ferrying people up and down and asking "which floor"? LOL!

Most young guys (my own DS9 included) wore somewhat dressy pants with a nice shirt. Girls were a little more dressed up--gee, how could THAT be?

So, for those who have worn tuxes on the Magic before, which nights did you wear them

I wore a tux on formal and semi formal nights and felt perfectly comfortable doing so. Others will be dressed up those nights as well. Some people dress up for Palo and it is perfectly acceptable if not encouraged.

For our upcoming 7 day cruise I will be wearing my tux for formal, semi-formal, and our night at Palo. Bringing a suit for dinner at Palo would be just one more thing to carry on board.

On our 7 night eastern in April I wore a tux on formal night and semi-formal night. I wore a dark suit to Palo. I dressed down the tux on semi-formal night by wearing no vest or cumberbun and wearing a collarless shirt with a rhinestone buttoncover on the top button (instead of a tie). (I own my own tux).

Wear what you want to wear....Tux, suit, coat and tie or tie and dress shirt...have fun, its a vacation!
