I am so freaked out right now! DH went to work and took a bunch of computer stuff that was in the corner of the kitchen and had been there for a few weeks. When I went into the kitchen a little later I saw a black/brown fuzzy thing in that corner. Upon closer inspection it was a dead small bat. Blech!

I used the mat near the door to pick it up and throw it on the back deck. The mat then went in the garbage. I've been bleach mopping the kitchen floor all morning.

I called public health and they want us (and by us I mean DH) to put it in a container and bring it to a testing lab. They think it most likely either got in the house when we were away last week and died, or came from our attic (where we're doinf renovations) and died. Because we never saw it flying around they think it's highly unlikely that it touched us, but we need to get it tested for rabies just in case. Once again, BLECH!!

I basicly want to throw away everything in the house on the off chance it touched it. I, of course, won't, but I'll be cleaning everything all day today, and I do mean everything!

:faint: :scared: At least it was dead and not flying around. I'd be :scared1: . My mother had one flying around her house but was finally able to trap it in her porch and then open the door from outside for it to leave.

We had a bat in our bedroom flying around. Dh had just had knee surgery a few days before & was recovering on a bed I put in our living room. When I saw the bat flying I went hysterical. I did'nt care about his knee anymore. I just wanted that bat out of my house. He went up the steps on cruches & grabed that bat with a towel & set it free. He is my hero.

Just a quick update...The bat didn't have rabies. The lady from the county health department said that everything was fine, but that if it happened again to bring that bat in too. I told her that if it happened again I would be long gone!:scared:

Actually, she said it's highly likely to happen again since we just tore down a second house on our property and we're renovating the attic in this house. She said that in the spring/summer, the bats will go back to where they were born. All I can say is Blech, Blech, Blech!!

My friends had a bat flying around in their house in the middle of the night. Friend went to get her DH to save her! He sent friend to the garage to get his softball glove, and you guessed it, he acutally caught the thing in his glove as friend was chasing the bat around the house! :scared1:

my mom's house had bats. They are actually quite beneficial. In your situation I'd set up a bat house near where the old structure was...hopefully they will nest there instead of choosing your house. If they nest in your house, you'll be stuck with them until they leave in the fall.

They are most likely Little Brown Bats and those usually don't carry rabies. They only need a 1/4 inch access point to get into your house so if you are doing renovations it wouldn't suprise me that one got it.

They don't really like to share homes with people but if they've lost theirs and there are no other options they will nest where they can.

What a great idea!

Radionate: The Bat House is an excellent idea for you to prevent them from coming back in your house

I just want to say that of all the things you could find in the house, a bat is about the coolest. :thumbsup2

Eeek!!! Thank God it didn't turn around and fly at you to say hello!:scared1: You are a good woman because I would have left it there and slowly backed away, packed up the kids and left the house until DH came home to be the meeter and greeter!

I love the bat house idea! I just told DH and he's going to put one way out back. That's where it's the buggiest anyway.

DD and DH went to Pittsburgh to visit DFIL last July. I was home alone upstairs reading and saw something flying around in hall. Closed all doors, thought it was a bird. Called DH and he was absolutely no help. Called DBIL who lives a couple of miles down the road. Nephews didn't want to come (chickens). He came and couldn't find it. We went room by room looking.

Finally found it in the living room hanging on a wood beam on ceiling. Opened front door, hit bat with broom and went running out of the house. He finally came out and I was petrified for two full days.

Called bat guy. Bat guy proceeded to seal the whole house and install one way bat doors in attic. He found a little evidence they were there. I still think they came in through window where air conditioner is.

Long story short, DH was useless 600+ miles away. I took care of problem myself. They are leaving again this summer. No air conditioners in until after they return I don't care how hot it gets.

Glad yours didn't have rabies. They say if you wake up with a bat in your room you need to go to DR immediately.

Uhh I feel your pain. You should have been at our house last night. We were having dinner and I said to my older brother "Did you hear that?" he asked what. Then all of a sudden a small black bat flew over my head. I screamed bloody murder! we eventually trapped it in my dad's office then my dad set it free from the outside. This was basically me. :scared1: :scared1: :scared1: :scared1: :scared1: :scared1: :scared1:     :scared: :scared: :scared: :scared: :crazy2: :duck:

OMG I did not think of that. I never would have waited to see if it was dead.:scared1:

I would have got dressed before I fled. :car:
