A cure for smoking in cabins

How do we stop those who insist on smoking in the cabins?..

I for one, cannot stand the smell of a room after someone had smoked in it, and had the unfortunate experience of this when we went on our first cruise.

We stayed at the Quality Suites in a "non smoking" room. Other than the smell, there were burn marks on several areas in from cigarette butts, etc....

On the Disney Ships, they should make the smoke detectors very sensitive (like in the bathroom of an airplane) so that when they smoke in the room it sets of their smoke detector!

I could be wrong, but I recall from a Bridge Tour on our first cruise many years ago, one of the officers said they can detect if anyone is smoking in a room, as they have very sensitive fire monitoring equipment. They can tell at the bridge, but no alarms go off in the room.

I wonder if they call & request you put it out?

On our cruise, we were walking back to the cabin and we saw CMs striding purposefully down the halls...walkie talkies going...and wondered what was going on. THen we smelled cigarette smoke. We were down on deck 2 right up at the front, and the smell was blatant. Apparently the crew was trying to find the source of the smell to stop it.

Don't know what actually happened, but it was good to see that they smelled it too and were taking action about it.

Some people just don't realize what a safety issue it realy is!! I don't smoke, but if someone needs to, there are places for it!

That makes me wonder why the other cruise lines (Carnival*, NCL, Celebrity, Princess, Holland America, RCCL, Costa, etc.) allow smoking in any and all staterooms.

I agree that smokers should have places to smoke on the ship. But I don't see why staterooms that will be occupied by non-smokers within a few hours after the smokers disembark are considered smoking spaces by other cruise lines.

I'm actually kind of mad at the cruise industry. I would love to take my wife and kids to destinations like Alaska or the Mexican Riviera, but if my only choice is to stay in a smoking stateroom, we'll have to pass.

Thank Goodness for Disney Cruise Line.

*Carnival Paradise is non-smoking through summer 2004, after which Carnival will also allow smoking in all staterooms.

My husband is a light smoker and he would never even consider smoking in a room. The verandah was his best friend at night. It seemed like the only cigarette he needed to relax on the cruise was one on the verandah with a beer after dinner. It was probably the most relaxed I had seen him in a long time!
I have a great picture that I had blown up to put on our mantle of him out there with the sunset. I point to it from time to time to tell him to slow down and relax!

I can't stand the smell of smoke...and I tend to have a keen nose for it for some reason. I am renting a car right now that reeks!!! It is like that seinfeld "BO" episode except for smoke. Smoking in the cabin is dangerous for everyone on board...think of all the little children. You might as well bring your cat with you and let it urinate all over the room....you can clean it but the smell NEVER goes away!!!!

Here's a few things I learned while on some of the adult educational series.

Ships are allowed to only have a small percentage of wood on board in the construction of the ship. Most of the "wood" we see is actually a very thin veneer over some other material. Wood floats, but a fire at sea is deadly.

In the kitchens they cook with steam. There are no open flames in the kitchens (gas) nor electric cook tops.

On our second Disney-cruise we had the pleasure to have the Ship's Officer dining with us on formal night. He's the guy being responsible for maintenance and safety. He told us that the detectors in the staterooms alert the ship's personnel quite reliable about someone smoking. We asked him that, because that day we saw him and a couple of other guys in white running like crazy across the ship to a stateroom in the aft portion. He told us that they were alerted by the detector and had a very serious talk with the offender.
On three DCL-cruises we have never been bothered by smoke, be it second-hand or residual. And believe me, we're very sensitive as ex-smokers (+6 years).
