Update March 2011 - I posted this 4 years ago after receiving great advice from many on this board on how best to enjoy our one hour of Magic Morning/MM. HydroGuy has included this post in his excellent sticky, so it gets bumped from time to time.

With the Nemo attraction now a part of MM, this thread could have been re-named "A Critique of MM w/o Nemo" or "How Best to Enjoy MM on a non-Nemo day". But since Nemo is NOT worth dedicating 30-50 minutes of a visitor's MM time, this Critique & the comments by others below are still very relevent to enjoying & optimizing one's time during MM.

For any questions on how MM works (or practically any information regarding MM), one should review DLR 29's excellent Magic Morning Superthread (which is also included on HydroGuy's Super Sticky). Also, after much discussion here on the board, the general consensus on the desired itinerary for maximizing FantasyLand during MM (assuming one does Nemo at another time) would be:

- Peter Pan. (best to be one of the first on...because after 3-5 min. a line begins to form & it generally stays long)

- Dumbo. (if you're one of the first one on PP, you'll be able to ride Dumbo on the the first or second cycle).

- Alice (or Matterhorn)

- Matterhorn (or Alice) - If inclined, you can ride BOTH sides of the Matterhorn...& say "Hi" to Harold when he growls "Hi" to you. :goodvibes

- The Teacups (or Mr. Toad) - If you're walking by the teacups & they're loading, hop on....otherwise continue on to our favorite Toad.

- Toad (or the Teacups) - & I realize that over half the folks might skip the spinning teacup ride.

- Carousel/Pinocchio/Snow White - These 3 can be ridden in any order & are just a few steps from each other. None should have much of a line during MM. Also, Pinocchio & SW can be ridden throughout the day with little line. If walking by the Carousel & it's loading.....hop on....otherwise you can walk over to the other two for a quick ride.

If you have 2 or more days of MM available to you (because you're staying on site). Then you could change the above up a little. But if Peter Pan is on your schedule for the day.....it's first.....always first.

Even if PP isn't on your schedule, & you're thinking that you want to ride SM or Buzz during MM..... then I'd still do (for example)....Alice, Matterhorn & Toady BEFORE heading over to Buzz & SM. Plus if you dedicate the last 15-25 min. (as opposed to the first 15-25 min.) of MM to riding SM once or twice, you'll be right there to pick up your first FP (at SM) before the Gen. Adm. hordes show up one min. after rope drop. :)

I just got back and had a great time @ DLR. I'll try to do a trip report, but wanted to offer opinions on specific items that I had asked about. First Topic:

Hound's "rules" in regards to DL Magic Morning -

- If available and you don't use it.....you're crazy.
- If you don't follow HydroGuy's advice (& the other knowledgable Dis'ers here).....you're crazy.

My experience w/ MM:

Got the family up between 6 - 6:15am, shower, shave etc, & I was out the door (of the Fairfield Motel on Harbor Blvd) & standing in line at McDonalds at 6:55am (ordered for all 4 of us...they stumbled in between 7am - 7:05am). We quickly ate then left (at about 7:25 am) & power walked (with coffee in hand) to line at DL arriving at 7:35am (11th in our line).

At 8am sharp (we all counted down) they let us in & the family walked "purposefully" down Main St. toward the "smallish" castle (it had been 40 years since i'd seen it). We carefully avoided knocking down small children & grandmothers with walkers. :rolleyes1

Per the excellent advice from those listed above we rode (in order):

-Peter Pan - no wait. One of the first on.

-Dumbo - waited 52 1/2 seconds. Rode on the second cycle.

-Alice - (I don't remember it from 40 years ago....i liked it....would even like it better if Jefferson Airplane was soundtracking). Waited maybe 2 min.

-Matterhorn - I goofed. I didn't know there was ANOTHER LINE. My wait was about 8-10 minutes (if i had gone to the line on the FAR side of the mountain it would have been about 3-4 minutes...didn't realize it till we were almost on.) 8 y/o kiddo was a little scared but like it. :scared1:

-Mr. Toad - 1 min. wait. The Toad "Rocked"... just like I remembered it! Kiddo & I loved it. :jumping2:

-Snow White - 2 min. wait. (That witch is really mean...isn't she?)

-Pinochio - 1 min. wait. (very cute ride...i don't remember it...was it always there?)

-Carousel - 2 min. wait. And PLUTO RODE WITH US. pluto:

At this point it was 9:05 am, so we walked purposefully toward Tomorrowland (taking the very secret passageway that took us right by Snow White's statues) - took 2 pictures - then continued on to SM and picked up SM FP (for return at 10:15am). My family (7 y/o kiddo, wife & wife's sister) was breathing heavily & their heads were spinning so we strolled over to Main St.... got a cup of coffee & a danish... & relaxed for 5 min. before walking to...

-Storyland Canal Boats - (Long line that didn't move the 5 min. we were there...i'm guessing all the MM folks in Fantasyland headed here & it was slow to open.....anyway's...we bailed & walked on to (with absolutely no wait!)......

- It's a small, small (headache inducing) world. Which was actually very nice. & I HAD remembered how nice the landscaping was....nice to see it still looks great (way better than that park in Orlando).

Trip report to come, but I wanted to inform all who might contemplate EE for DL...to DO IT. And as always follow HydroGuy's & the other Diser's most excellent advice. :thumbsup2

hound :cool2:

Note: The next time that we enjoyed MM, we skipped the Teacups & Dumbo (on purpose) & found ourselves at the :42 minute mark with our Fantasyland rides completed.

So, we strolled over to Buzz & rode it twice (walk on both times), then continued over to Space Mountain & picked up our first FP of the day at :01. This worked very well for us, as it got us started on our FP collection immediately for the rest of the early morning.

We had 4 FPs in our pocket (that we used that evening) when we left DL at 10:20am & hopped to DCA for a 2.5 hour visit. (prior to our afternoon rest).

Very funny can't wait for TR. Refresh my recollection where is the secret passage to Tomarrowland???

What date did you do EE?

We did EE on Thurs. March 15. Was first thru the turnstlyes of gate #20. We headed straight for Fantasy Land. Stopped for less than 1 min. for a quick pic with a character. We then went thru castle and rode Peter Pan (already a line of 20 people ahead of us, then did Dumbo (waited 3 min,) then did Matterhorn (waited 10 min) on side closest to teacups.

HOWEVER....

On Fri, March 16, we entered at 8AM regular opening (20th in line) and did exactly the same thing we did Thurs, but with NO waits anywhere. We did PP, Dumbo, then Matterhorn. When we got off Matterhorn there was NO LINE, so we walked thru the roped area and immediately rode a second time.

Friday, March 16 from 8-9AM was FAR LESS BUSY in Fantasyland compared to the previous day (Thurs.) having EE.

I wish I did my EE on the Tues, not the Thurs.

Would you recommend EE for people without kids? Dh and I had EE last year but were so tired we ended up sleeping in and missed, but that night in the hottub this guy said they did EE and we didn't miss anything. They said only the kiddie rides were open and there wasn't anything to do. do you agree with this?

EE allows you to get into Fantasyland. You can also do Matterhorn during this time. Check which rides are in FL and decide if you want 1 hour less sleep to go on these with little or no waiting.

Kiddie rides? There aren't any "kiddie rides" in DL! All rides are completely appropriate and FUN for all ages. Personally, I love the FL dark rides and wouldn't miss them for anything even if I was traveling without my kids. EE is a great time to enjoy them without the long lines.

Space Mtn is open during EE too, which many people with older kids who are looking for speed head straight for.

Me too. I am in the over 40 crowd and love the thrill rides as much as anyone. But PP, Mr. Toad and Alice are must do's for me. The only rides I would skip in Fantasyland are Dumbo and maybe Casey Jr. The Caroussel doesn't do much for me either.

Hound, glad your EE experience was successful. Yes, the two lines at Matterhorn trip up a lot of people.

In general to one of the other posts, if you are an adult with little interest in Fantasyland then EE may not be worth getting up early for. But as noted above, I think there is plenty in Fantasyland to interest adults. At least those with a little imagination.

Alright, good to know. I guess that guy just didn't have any imagination ;)
Although I will say we did the storybook ride (I can't remember what it's called specifically) and we thought it was boring, so to be honest I haven't ever really done any other rides in FL (except the teacups which I enjoy) are the other FL rides similar to the storybook ride? I do remember doing Mr. Toads wild ride but I Thought that was in toontown. Is toontown open for EE?

What date did you do EE? ....WE DID EE ON TUESDAY MARCH 13TH.

did Matterhorn (waited 10 min) on side closest to teacups.

We did EE on Tuesday March 13th.

regarding Matterhorn...we were also in line closest to the teacups....shorter line was on the OTHER side (another few yards towards the new Nemo ride). But this was prior to the Nemo ride opening. Both lines are probably the same once Nemo opens.

:)

:ssst: TwingleMum....be careful......we don't want everyone to know the location of the "secret passageway". :cool2:

(When you hop off the carousel and start walking back thru the castle towards Main St., the passage is to the left....you walk by those pretty statues of Snowy & her buddies - the dwarfs. Continue walking and you walk right into the back of the Buzz ride.) :)

Tunetown is not open for EE. Mr. Toads is in FL though. I'm quite sure of that.

IMO the dark rides aren't like the storybook boats. In the dark rides, you're the character experiencing the scenes for the most part. In the storybook boats, you're looking at the diaramas.

In my humble opinion, the best time to go on the Storybookland Canal Boats is right at twilight. The lights come on, and the little cottages, really look beautiful!

Oh okay lol. That sounds fun then, I just thought the diaramas were boring but if there is a cool theme and it's like you're in the movie that will be good then. I did enjoy Mr. Toad I just remember a really long line up. I thought it was in toontown but I guess not.

I totally agree. However, it is easier to do it at twilight during off-season with shorter lines. During high season the line is so long at twilight. So we have not done a twilight ride for our last several trips - usually we do it early morning.

The Fantasyland "Dark" rides (Alice in Wonderland, Snow White, Mr. Toad, Peter Pan & even Pinnochio) are as much for adults as for kids. I wouldn't go to DL (or WDW) w/o "doing" the old favorites. EE allows you to ride these very slow (line) moving rides in minutes.

Sadly, the wonderful Mr. Toad can NOT be found "in Florida" though. :sad2:

Also, regarding Toontown....it opened at 10am the day we were there....a full hour after the General Park opened (& 2 hours after EE began).

I think Hound was referring to this thread:

www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=1381874
Correct.

Also, I refer to HydroGuy's "tips" for WDW veterans & his thread on how to best use "FP during High Season".

Very detailed but easy to read info....his process for working the early morning hours and and hitting Fast Passes early & often saved us hours over the 2 days of touring. We rarely were in line over 10 min.

Thanks.:thumbsup2

That makes sense! Our family only goes in the off season, so it's not a problem for us!

While I would like to take credit for "my process", it is really a distillation of things like RideMax and reading their tips, working with resources like Tour Guide Mike for WDW (whose advice works well for DLR - with some tweaks), with my personal experience mixed in. But for the most part, it was invented by others.

Regarding my tips for WDW vets, that is mostly a collection of my own thoughts and observations.
