I just got this book today and I finished it! It was so sad, the way that boy's mom treated him. I thought it was a great book; very moving. Has anyone else read it?

I've read it and there are a couple of follow up books too. I read them all. He's an amazing person to make it through all that!

I don't know anything about the book, but I'm looking at the picture in your signature. I'm not a fanatic, so excuse me if I'm mistaken, but is that Orlando Bloom :teeth:??

I read both books and I heard him speak at a siminar for my work. He is such an awesome person. The way he talked about his life and especially what he said about his mom. If you ever get a chance to hear him speak, you need to go.

I cried and cried when I read both books.

Why yes it is!!

there is actually a third book in the series, "A Man Named Dave." He has also written at least one other book, which I haven't had the chance to read yet, but I believe it is called "The Privilege of Youth."

I read it and 2 of the followups. It was very sad. How can one person treat another like that, especially their own child?

I've read it twice and his 2nd book out. Very very sad how she treated her son so poorly.:(

Just got all three of his books
read the first and cried thru it

i have just started the 2nd

he must be such an incredable person to meet

I have read all of his books. It is so sad and sickening how someone could treat a child like he was treated. He went through such horrible things in his life and has come out to be a wonderful/successful person. I would read this during naptime when I worked at the daycare and would just cry.

I made the mistake of reading the book and trying to eat dinner. I was gagging!!

I only read the first book.

What happens to the mother and the rest of the family?

Yep. I read it and the 2 following books as well. It was so sad. Its amazing (and refreshing) to see someone excel in life after starting out in such a horrible way.

I read the back cover of the book, but even that almost made me cry. I figured reading the whole thing would be too much for me.

I read somewhere years ago that he forgave his mother (if that's what you want to call her  ) and she died in his arms.

I just bought this book last week, and am planning to read it sometime soon.

I read all 3. Be sure to keep your kleenex handy because you will be crying the whole way through.
Its incomprehensible to think someone could treat their own child (or any child) like that.
I dont remember the part about his mom dying in his arms. Though she did die never telling him she was sorry or even being nice to him when he was grown.

Yes. It is so moving and really makes you think. I thought it was very well written. He is an inspiration.

His other books are great as well. It is so wonderful how he has turned an awful situation from his childhood around and used it to make others aware of the horrors of child abuse.

Dave Pelzer has a recent book from 2000 called "Help Yourself" it is a wonderful positive book. If you haven't read any of his others this one does give background on his abuse as a child but
the focus is about making the best of your own life and creating a positive attitude no matter what the situation.

He was with his dad when he died of cancer but not with his mom. He had forgiven her but he saw her only a few times after he became an adult, she is now dead. I believe he still has contact with his brothers.

What an inspiration he is!
