A cell phone question

Greetings, shortly I am travelling from NZ to Southern California... Hubby and I are planning to purchase two cheap cell phones over the internet and have them delivered to our hotel.

My question:
If I purchase an AT&T No-contract mobile phone - how do I put credit on the phone???
And how do I know how much I am paying per minute.


(I have looked on their website, but haven't found the answer... In NZ, this is info which I "just know"... But don't assume that every one does it the way we do in New Zealand).

I'm looking at AT & T when we go in December too and found this page on their site really helpful:

You can see the different types of calling plans you can choose and then about 2/3 down the page you can see "Adding Funds to your Account".
