Ran across some Ektachrome slides from The Magic Kingdom July 1976 and spent a few minutes this morning scanning uploading. All are edited to some degree or another, including a few Topaz Adjust attempts. Here are a few of the better ones:

I was somewhat surprised by two things: first, that the images had held up as well as they have and second, that the MK really has not changed all that much over the years.

The full gallery is HERE.

Very cool---thanks for sharing! I love the shot of the riverboat and the guests paddling the canoe with the CMs in the Davy Crockett style hats.

Very nice Ed!! What's with the canoe pic, where is that and where are they going?

Dave,

You are taxing my one remaining brain cell to remember something from 33+ years ago, but IIRC, that was the mode of transportation to Tom Sawyer Island.

I was kind of thinking that and sorry for hurting your head like that. :goodvibes

They actually still have canoes in Disneyland. We rode them a couple of years ago. I didn't know they had them in the MK!

Great shots. Not surprising the canoes are gone...can't expect us fat and lazy Americans to do manual labor.

Yes, but you can't take them to the Island. You can just take them in a little circle.

My kids really miss that though! They still talk about it and we have been out of CA for 4 years!

What do you use to scan your slides?

I have SO MANY I need to put onto the computer or on to a CD.

Ok, I am looking at the site now. I don't see where it says SLIDES.....did you just flat scan it?

Sorry for all the questions. I am just really interested and when you said they were slides I got really excited to know how!

I asked at Wolf Camera today and they want .75 per slide to scan it. I have thousands of slides and so do my parents.

Thanks,

Dawn

Ed- Wow- these are just great. I love the canoe shot as well. The slides held up very well- makes me wonder if/where any of my digital files will exist in 30- 40- 50 years. I have been scanning some of my old family slides from the 50's and they still look very good.

Dawn- I will give a +1 for the Epson V500. Very nice flatbed scanner that has a built-in illuminator and comes with brackets than can scan 2x 35mm strips- 4x mounted slides or 2x 120 film exposures at a time. It does a good job for what I need it for. Most of everything in the Film Section on my Flickr page was scanned with one.

Dawn, it is pretty simple to set up and use. The scanner does an evaluative scan and detects what kind of image - paper, film, or transparency - is being scanned. The cover, of course, has a light in it to back-light the film or transparency, and there is a cover that has to be removed (simple procedure) to uncover the back-light. I had a few instances of the scanner not scanning the whole slide (you can do four slides in mounts at a time), but re-scanning them resolved the issue. There is a settings interface that allows you to adjust resolution, JPEG compression, etc. I scanned these at 600dpi. The scanner also includes plastic overlays that hold the slides or film in the correct position for scanning, which is nice.

Hope that helps. NewEgg price seems to be the best, currently, if interested in this model.

One word of warning, Dawn... Scanning slides is a time-consuming process.

I scanned something around 150 35mm films. I did it in my spare time in evenings and weekends, and it took the best part of a year.

On the other hand, I sold the scanner on eBay for pretty much the same as I had paid for it once I had scanned them all, so that wasn't too bad!

Thanks! In a search last night I also see that the Canon 8800 Canoscan is a comparable machine.

My Christmas list is getting LONG!

Yes, I am finding that one reason I completely stopped with hobbies for several years (particularly when going through the baby and toddler stages with my boys) was the time consumption!

Thanks for the warning. Other than taking them somewhere, any other method that is faster?

I am still looking for the best (or easiest) way to scan about 100 rolls of negatives. Epson's V500 (and now the V600 at $250) look pretty good. The V700 offers twice the capacity/speed and much greater D-Max at a higher price. The ultimate goal is to put them on HDTV so I only need 1920 pixels, about 1200 ppi or about 2MP.

Here is a link to a review of some scanners:

The other option is to "scan" with the duplicator that I use for slides and use software like VueScan to process the "scans". Either way, VueScan or SilverFast is recommended over the software that is included with the scanner (for negatives only, slides are much easier).
