we ALL have hopes that whomever we voted for had the answers. and now that we have a new President elect, we all have hopes that he will help US, personally.
will he? I don't know.. THAT was NOT the issue on THIS particular thread. I sure hope so, maybe not. remains to be seen, and these issues can be talked about on NUMEROUS other threads.

I am just excited to see, in my lifetime, a family of "color" in the whitehouse.
As an old "hippie" , it warms my soul that our country can put skin color and other predjudices aside. hopefully, when my grandson(3 years old) is my age, race won't be an issue at all!
but in 2008, it IS an historic moment!!! (whatever your political leanings.

It's great that America has apparently moved beyond race.
I didn't vote for him because I disagree with his policies but I pray for him nonetheless. I pray for his safety, for wisdom and guidance.

Condi Rice was not the first black or the first woman to be Sec. of State. Thomas was also not the first black Supreme Court Justice. The fuss is usually made the first time something happens.

It is historic that a minority was elected.

Condoleeza Rice was the first black woman to be SoS. Colin Powell was the first black SoS. I don't remember either being celebrated. Was that because they're Repubs?
We also have the first Latino AG, appointed by Bush. Why wasn't there a celebration for him?

As an African American it is a momentous occasion. My dad is a Korean and Vietnam war vet. He was awarded a silver star and a bronze star. His proclamation reads:

The president of the United States of America, authorized by act of courage July 9, 1918, has awarded the silver star to PRIVATE FIRST CLASS EDWARD SANDERS, USA for gallantry in action: Private Sanders, distinguished himself by gallantry in action near Hanman, Korea from 8 to 11 August 1950.

You tell your father I said THANK YOU. He's a hero, plain and simple. Men like him are the reason I get to sleep at night.

I'm happy a person of color is in the white house (even though I didn't vote for him, simply because I differ on the issues). I hope this election can help other people of color feel they too can be victorious in whatever they set their minds to. I hope this helps people lift themselves up by their bootstraps. I hope it makes all people in our country more equal, in reality and in their own minds (on both sides!). I hope it makes the racist among us realize how wrong they are, and I hope for nothing but success for our president-elect.

People die to come here, literally, everyday. There is more opportunity here in America than anywhere in the world. I'm glad this election proved that.

To be completely honest, I think it is racist to think of him as our first president of color. I don't think of our past presidents as white. I think of them as men who are all Americans. If we are going to get past color, then we need to stop thinking in those terms. JMHO!

I disagree. I don't think it's racist to think of Obama as our first president of color, because he IS the first president of color. How can that fact be ignored? I do think it is an historic event, because we've never had a president of color. I don't think it will have any impact on what he does as president or the decisions he will make, because he will serve all, not just citizens of color, but everyone. I think it would be nice to stop thinking in terms of an individual's race, but I don't think we've reached that point yet, and probably won't any time soon, but we are making progress.

That's not what she said. She didn't say "more proud". She said this was the first time in her adult life she was proud. BIG difference.

“For the first time in my adult life, I am proud of my country,” she told a Milwaukee crowd today, “because it feels like hope is making a comeback.”

THEN she backpeddled (like here husband did many times) to clarify what she really meant.

I'm gonna have to take her (not the back peddling version) word for it that until her husband starting running for President, there wasn't anything that happened in this country in her adult life that she could be proud of. I'm not "so" bothered by it but I just can't believe in the 20 plus years of being an adult nothing happened in this country that she could be proud of. Really? Nothing??

For me, when people say "black president" they are judging the man by his skin color. I don't lose sleep over this, but for ME, Obama is a whitey. His mother was white, his grandparents white -- and they raised him. Yes, I see him as the first president with African heritage. But I don't see him as the first president of color. I am the OP,52 years old., female, mostly republican. I am impressed that in my life time a PERSON... OF color. was elected as president of our country. SPlIT HAIRS all you will. (and I will be impressed if a person of the female gender is elected in my lifetime , even if I object to her policies).
