as a white female, age 52, this is very exciting to me!. I remember, as a middle school child, seeing the race riots in my home town, Chicago. regardless of your partisan commitment, to me this is an historic moment!!. those of us who have revered Colin Powell, as republicans, can stand back and say, PROUDLY, that this is TRULY a land of opportunity!
I have many Hispanic friends who also look on this as a great moment in time. (remember when it was a great thing when JFK.. a "catholic" was president?)
I am ashamed to say I still have friends who still use the "N" word. (I'm working on them!) but I think this presidency will help bridge the gap between races. and I'm sure , some day, there will be a qualified woman. but for right now, THIS IS VERY EXCITING! I remember the things we talked about and sang about back in .... the day... 1973.... when I graduated from high school...... remember that song,... THE YOUNGBLOODS... "get together."
(and, believe it or not, I have voted republican for most of my adult life.... until THIS election..)

If nothing else, THIS IS a MOMENTOUS OCCASION.

if Barrack Obama doesn't do well, there will be another election in 4 years. but the barrier has been broken. and we will judge him on his PERFORMANCE, not his color....( and if he doesn't do well for my family, I will vote him out in 4 years, regardless of his color!)

I saw a bumper sticker today that said, "another old white woman for Obama.' I wish I'd had that one on my car. I'm 55 and white and I saw his abillity to connect when we spent several hours with him two years ago in a very intimate setting, about 200 people. He's going to be a marvelous leader. I hope people listen openly and try to follow his lead because I believe we could really make some good things happen with Obama in office. The important thing to remember is that we as a country MUST work hard at it. There are no golden carrots in this healing: it will probably not be fun but in the end we should have someting to show for it.

It's very exciting.... I am worried about his safety (and his family's safety) We have to hope the Secret Service is on their toes (which I'm sure they are!) Of course all Presidents are at risk- but he has a whole other list of whackos that will be after him....:sad2:

I did not vote for Obama but am very elated for the Obama's and pray that he will be a Great President.

A very proud day for all Americans, Yet we still have a long way to go, to remove the hate and prejudice's of people whose see color or religion and not the person for who they are.

Prayer's and good thoughts for the Obama's.

are there not enough thread s about this already- perhaps they can combine them all into one....

I just realized something yesterday. My girls are 5yo. This is the first election that they will remember.

They know that a woman named Hilliary Clinton campaigned for Pres.
They know that a woman named Sarah Palin ran for VP.
They know that their next Pres is a person of color.

As far as my girls are concerned, this is the norm!!! They will grow up knowing that any person regardless of race, gender or skin color can be President of the US. They won't be locked in the "old, white guy" frame of mind.

How cool is that !!!!!!!!!

I'm also a 52 year old white female :) and I am so happy about how our world is changing! Who thought we would ever see this in our lifetime? I feel like we dreamed it and we did it. :hippie:

This is a great post, and so true!

It's good to know that a barrier has been broken! I was really struck before the election by the news stories quoting black citizens who felt whites would never vote for a black man in the privacy of a voting booth. And I saw the elation of black voters when they realized the truth.....while racism is still a problem, the majority of Americans have moved on and are ready to judge a person by the quality of the person, not skin color!

This is the first election my 6-yr old will remember. We brought him to the polls when we voted. I thought it was important he got involved, and he enjoyed it.

I don't think race will ever factor into his head though, because he doesn't notice that. I do not differentiate people, therefore he has never mentioned color. We have followed the election, together, and he has only asked about the personality of each candidate.

Is he the first balck President or the first Bi-Racial President...why isn't he considered a "white" President if he's half white:confused3 ...then again why do we need to label everyone:confused3

He is not a black president. He is bi-racial- He could just as easily be called a white president as he could black. He was even raised white. Why does everyone seem to leave the white part of him out?

How does he define himself?
