~ A 21 month old, a celebrity sighting, & a whole lotta food~2 week trip~ 2/28 update

Your meal at Kona looks delish! Like you said, maybe next trip, you can make it to Ohana. We were at the luau in August and Wishes started just as we were leaving the show. The view from the Poly was absolutely gorgeous! I'd love to stay there one day but I have to buy that winning lottery ticket first.:lmao:

YAY!! Great update! Sorry you didn't get to eat at O'hana--but Kona looked awesome, too!! I just love all of your pics of the Poly--I miss being there so much!! It IS a fabulous resort!! I'm so glad you were able to see Wishes from the beach of the Poly--wasn't it incredible?! We did the same thing the first night of our trip. I cannot WAIT to go back!! Looking forward to hearing more!!

I remember reading about Wishes on your TR. Even after hearing about it from others, I wasn't quite prepared for how wonderful it would be. I loved it! I hope we get to go to O'hana next time, but I have no idea when we will be going back to WDW. Oh well, it is still something to look forward to.

Well, glad I could help. :)

I'll start it in a few weeks..I'll be making our ADR's on October 27th and then I'll get it started up.

Let me know when you start it up. I'll be sure to sub to it. You & your BF are going by yourselves next time right? That will be fun for you!

No, not any specific reason. Once we found out that he was a boy, I just picked it out and told my husband that's what his name was going to be. He didn't like it too much at first, but it grew on him and he loved it. What's your Dylan's middle name? Ours is James after my DH's father.

Glad to hear that I didn't miss it!

Wow! Our Dylan's middle name is James too! Named after Todd's middle name. Great minds think alike. :goodvibes

What a great update!

From what I have heard, it takes 2 hours to eat at O'hana so I think you really did the right thing, you probably wouldn't have gotten back until midnight and Dylan might have had a harder time with being in the restaurant for so long.

Plus you would have missed your fireworks on the beach disney moment. things happen for a reason :)

I love the food at Kona, but boy the service is consistently "adequate". :lmao:

Poor baby! I wanted to give him some baby aspirin when I saw that, ouch! I'm amazed he didn't have any kind of fever with that many teeth at once.

I agree that things happen for a reason. I'm so glad we were able to watch Wishes that night. I was really surprised there was no fever too! There were no signs with him that he was teething, other than that he was cranky. But he threw his head back one time while he was crying and I caught a glimpse of the inside of his mouth and I could see them poking through the skin. :sad2:

Too bad about Ohana! But, that food at Kona looks fabulous! I have never tried Kona...maybe on a future trip! Poor Dylan with the teething! My nephew is 10 months old and has been teething for what feels like MONTHS!!! The poor thing just doesn't seem to ever get any teeth! I may have to check out the fireworks from the Poly beach when we are there in December. Looks like a nice view and experience.

Kona's food is great! But like the previous poster said, the service always seems just adequate. You should definitley try it if you like that type of food. I don't think you will be disappointed.

Dylan started teething around 10 months. He was a late teether, I guess. :confused3 But we go through the same thing...his gums will be swollen, you can see them start to poke through, then they go back down. It looks so painful.

Great updates! I was about 10 pages behind so I am all caught up now. :thumbsup2

What a little trooper you have - all that going on with his teeth and foot and still trucking along - good for him! What a sweetie. :lovestruc

Love your TR so far, looking forward to reading the rest! Take care!

Katie

Dylan really was a trooper that night! Even with all that was going on with him, he seemed to still be having a good time. Dinner was the hardest for him and I think he was just bored and then the teeth would bother him.

Thanks for reading!

Hi! You will enjoy O'Hanas more when Dylan is just a little older. However, it really is fantastic!! My favorite dinner of last year. Having said that, the best part of our dinner was that I strategically planned our ADR so that we could watch wishes from the beach (thanks Dissers!), and you have already gotten that part accomplished!! I agree with you, the best place to see it!!!

Thanks for the TR!

That's a good idea. I will try to remember to do that for the next trip. I love all of the tips from people on this board!! :goodvibes

Sorry you missed Ohana, Kona does look good-- I'll have to add that to my "must try" list. I'm glad you got to watch Wishes from the Poly Beach. This is one of my favorite things to do while at WDW. It's so peaceful.
Poor Dylan, teething and sore foot, he is still so well behaved though!

Peaceful is the right word. It is such a contrast to watching it on Main Street with a million other people. I couldn't believe how quiet it was on the beach, even with a lot of people around. We will definitley be doing that again!

I am home sick from work today and found your TR. I read the ENTIRE thing in one sitting!:lmao: It kept my mind off how crappy I feel:thumbsup2

Your son is absolutely adorable!!! My little man is 16 months and I love seeing how well your son behaved this entire trip!!!! We are going to wait to take Jax (my baby) one more year, but I now feel fully confident that he will be able to handle it. :woohoo:

Cant wait to hear about the last couple of days!

Aww, you are so sweet! Thanks for reading. BTW - I am home sick today too! I don't usually stay home, but there was no way I could get out of bed at 5:30 this morning!

You are going to have so much fun with your son! I wish that Dylan would stay a baby for a little while longer so that we could take him back to WDW again while he is at such a fun age. Is his name Jax or Jaxon? We considered the name Jaxon for Dylan for a while. I think it is so cute!!

The luau sounds like a lot of fun. I will probably want to try that when Dylan is older. I would have to agree with you about that lottery ticket. But it would be soooo worth it!

Another great update! Sorry to hear that Ohanas didn't work, but Kona is one of our faves. That bread is unbelievable! I think we had to ask for seconds the last time we were there and restrain ourselves from asking for more! If only you could have Disney food shipped home?! :lmao: Love the picture at the end of Dylan playing in bed. Such a cute picture!

Trying to catch up on everything....been MIA. I had to say I LOVE the pics of Dylan at Crystal Palace. They're so adorable! You can tell he had a good time there. Also GREAT resort pics!!! You did a wonderful job, the pictures look like post cards! :thumbsup2

Yippee for long naps! I swear, my DS’s longest naps have been on vacation, usually he is a horrible napper. I’m hoping Disney really tires him out! Dylan looks like he’s having so much fun in the pool! Hope he was feeling better – teething is no fun at all.

OMG the food looks amazing!

The fireworks at the Poly sounds like a great idea! I’m gonna have to try to remember that for our December trip!

Does the bread sound sooo good? Yum! I wish I had some right now. I wonder if the recipe is online somewhere...

Dylan loves playing on the beds on vacation. He never does that at home, but on vacation he is so excited to jump on it, play under the covers, roll around, etc. :confused3

THe CP was definitely a highlight for us. Can't wait to go back again. Thanks! I was really surprised the the Poly inside pics turned out as good as they did. By the end of this trip I was getting to know the settings on my camera a little better. Those pictures make me miss being there. :sad2: Glad you stopped by!

Dylan has always been a pretty good napper, but not so much when we are in unfamiliar places. We tired him out pretty good every day though. The fireworks are great. Dylan seemed to handle them a little better than when we were in the park because it wasn't so overwhelming and directly on top of him. It was a nice perspective to see them from.

Darn that stinks about O'hana but you were def a good sport about giving it up!

I was really bummed about O'hana but Kona was a great replacement. Hopefully next time....

I'm just dying for another update!!!!:surfweb:
Any more plans for your thanksgiving trip to
disneyland??::MickeyMo::MinnieMo

Aww, thanks. I have been working on an update for the past few days. I just haven't had a lot of time because another friend of mine had a baby so we have been at the hospital quite a bit. Also, I got sick this last week and have been in bed a lot. I think I will get a new update done today.

As far as the DL trip, I think I'm going to do a PTR. I wasn't going to but I am getting near the end of this TR and it will be good to start something new. Hopefully I will do that soon and I will post a link here.

We woke up at 8:30 today. There was a horrible storm that rolled through during the night and it was so loud that it woke us up. I swear that the storm just sat right above our hotel because the lighting and thunder were hitting at almost the same time. In fact it wasn’t the sound of the thunder that woke me, it was a really bright flash of light. It was so weird. The thunder was literally shaking the walls of our condo for about an hour.

I kept waiting for Dylan to wake up and be scared, and he never did. We had his crib tucked away in an area of the bathroom where there were no windows and he was surrounded by walls on 3 sides, so it must have been a lot quieter in there. I still think he should have heard the storm, but by some miracle he slept right through it. Todd and I were both awake for the whole thing, and I think we all slept in a little to try to catch up on the lost sleep.

As a result, we got a later start time this morning and we finally left the condo about 10:30. We were headed to DHS for the first time on our trip!! How is it even possible that we have been here for 10 days and have not made it to this park yet? This used to be my favorite park when I was younger. I love all of the “old Hollywood” architecture and all of the palm trees. Even though I live in California, I still look forward to this park.

We got to the parking lot at 10:45 and there was no organization at all. The parking attendants were MIA or spaced out very poorly, so we weren’t really sure where we were supposed to go. We finally parked in the Film section and then waited about 10 minutes for a tram. It was extremely hot again today and we were baking in the sun while we waited. We were told that 2 of the trams were broken and I swear they were only running 1 tram. After waiting for 10 minutes, a tram pulls up and goes right by us. By now there was quite a crowd waiting and a ton of people pile onto the tram and all of us who had been waiting the whole time did not get on. Grrr. There was no clear marking of where the tram would stop, so a lot of people were really angry, us included. We finally just decided to walk to the front, which was quite a hike in the heat. Not a good start to the morning.

The problem with getting to the park so late was that we had an ADR at the Sci-Fi Dine In at 11:30. By the time we got into the park it was 11:10. I sent everyone else over to check in at the Sci-Fi and I power-walked over to Toy Story Mania to get Fast Passes for later. We have ridden this ride before at DCA in California, and they do not offer FP for the ride there. You always have to do the stand by line and the wait is usually 45 minutes or so. So I was shocked when the return time on the FP said 6:15 !! Now that I am home and reading other people’s TR’s I see that is pretty normal, but I was bummed we would have to wait so long. I walked over to Sci-Fi and by the time I got there I was drenched in sweat. Not a great feeling. Everyone else was waiting outside and a few minutes after I got there we were seated (right before our ADR time, I think).

We got inside and we were sitting all the way to the right, facing the screen.

There were only 2 rows in our car, so our family didn’t have to share with anyone else. That was great because Dylan was not doing so well. His teeth were still bothering him so he was cranky to start with. We sat down in our car and at first Dylan was just looking around and taking everything in. Then he got scared. I’m not sure why…maybe it was suddenly being in the dark. He never really looked at the movie screen so I don’t think he saw anything that scared him from that. He just got really clingy and he didn’t want to sit in the car anymore. We were trying to get settled and the waitress was handing us menus, etc. but he was just not happy. All of this led into a total meltdown.

Todd immediately took him out in his stroller and walked him around the whole building while I ordered our food. After I did that we switched and I picked him up and carried him. He did not stop crying for a while so I just tried to distract him with pictures on the walls, etc. He started to calm down so I would walk in to our car (which was right by the door) and have him say hi to Todd and then walk right back out. After a few times of doing that he started to relax and in about 10 minutes he was over it. I really think he got scared of the dark so by walking him in and out of the room he adjusted to it. He has never done something like that before and it never occurred to me that the environment there might upset him.

We got him to sit in between us in the car and soon after we got our food. Todd and I split the cheeseburger meal and we got Dylan another kid’s meal with mac & cheese, fruit & salad. We knew it was going to be too much food for him so we ate his salad. I don’t remember what my parents ordered, and we didn’t take any pictures of the food because it was so dark in there. Dylan stood up in the car and ate a lot of their food over the seat. That’s why I was glad that we weren’t sharing a car with anyone else. I could just picture him eating some stranger’s french fries!

Overall, the experience was just ok. I usually love going here and the food was good this time. I think that I spent most of the time worrying about Dylan and it kind of drained me. I was concerned that he would disrupt someone else and I didn’t want to ruin their lunch, so I was constantly keeping an eye on him to see if his attitude was going to take a nose dive again. I’m sure that we will be back again because it was not any fault of the restaurant itself. It was just a stressful hour.

After our lunch we headed over to the American Idol show to see it for the first time. We had been looking forward to this for a while because we really like to watch it on TV. This was a very cool show. Once we got inside we stayed up pretty high in the theater and walked all the way to the end of the row. I still was concerned about Dylan’s attitude and I wanted to be sure to have a fast way to escape if he started to act up. The theater was pretty full but there were very few people up where we were. It was kind of nice to not feel squished.

They started with a guy that came out to warm up the crowd. Then the host came out and introduced all of the singers and judges. They have judges that were similar in attitude to Randy, Paula & Simon. There were 3 singers and all of them could sing decently. The first girl was a teenager who could sing well but she was REALLY nervous. I felt bad for her but she did pretty good. The second guy was a teenager as well and he was a real showman. He was really trying to sell it to the crowd but it went WAY over the top for me…to the point of being obnoxious. The third girl was older and she sang “Breathe” (which is a really hard song) and she was just ok. In the end the first girl won. I really thought the guy would win because he was a better performer. After it was over Todd and I were talking about him and we came to the conclusion that he was a fake contestant. Our theory is that they hired a real performer to sing and make sure that the crowd stays hyped up, but that he doesn’t get to move on to another round. We are probably wrong but the guy just felt a little too smooth and perfect to be a teenager… it just felt a little staged. It was still a lot of fun and we were not disappointed after waiting to see it for so long.

I wanted to take Dylan to Playhouse Disney – Live on Stage, but it was not starting for a while, so we went to the One Man’s Dream exhibit. I have been a big Disney fan since I was little and my parents took us to Disneyland so this was fun for all of the nostalgia. Some of my favorite things in the exhibit are :

The wall with an original map of Disneyland on it.

Walt’s office. I love how humble this room is and how so much creativity came out of it.

We didn’t stay for the movie at the end because it was time to go back to Playhouse Disney, but we have seen it before and it is great to watch if you are into Walt and the history of Disney.

We headed back over to Playhouse Disney and stood in line outside. While we were standing there, Handy Manny walked by. He is one of Dylan’s favorite characters right now, so he was very excited and wanted to see him. I would have taken him over to meet him but the line was moving forward to go into the show.

ry%3D480

This was our first time seeing this show, since we have never been to WDW with kids before. Dylan loved this show but it was because he watched the cartoons on the Disney channel before we went on this trip and he recognized most of the characters. If you are planning to see this, be warned….you sit on the floor and they really pack you in tight if there is a big crowd. Todd & I did not mind very much but my parents weren’t too thrilled with sitting on the floor for ½ an hour. It definitely isn’t comfortable but they have the characters popping up from under the stage, so I think you aren’t supposed to see how it all works.

There was a guy that sang & danced on the stage with the puppets. I think they had 4 sections to the show…Mickey & friends, Handy Manny, Little Einsteins and Winnie the Pooh & friends. If you know the cartoons, it is a really cute show. They sing all of the songs from the shows and the kids get really excited when each new song comes on. The kids are encouraged to get up & dance, and it was SO cute watching all of the kids in the audience that were having a blast. Dylan wouldn’t get up and dance but he clapped to all the songs and he was really paying attention to the whole show. He LOVED when the bubbles fell from the ceiling. Overall, I would say this is a really great show for kids, but they will enjoy it more if they are familiar with the cartoons that are on the Disney channel.

They are just pretending to be happy about sitting on the floor. LOL.

After it was over, we walked outside and realized that it was 3:00 and that Dylan needed a nap. We left DHS just before the afternoon parade was starting so that was good timing to beat the crowds that would be leaving when the parade ended. We got back and Dylan went straight to bed at 3:30. Mom & dad took a nap so Todd and I went to the pool for an hour or so. While we were there, we talked about the plans for the rest of the day. The plan was to have dinner somewhere and then head back to DHS and use the FP for Toy Story Mania, then go on RNRC and ToT. The clouds started to roll in while we were in the pool but it never rained the whole time we were there. It was a nice time to be in the water because the clouds made it feel a lot more humid but it didn’t matter because we were in the pool.

We got back to the condo and decided to make things easy by getting Pizza Hut again from the food court. It would be fast and then we would go back to the park. Todd walked over to the food court to get the food for everyone. After had been gone about 10 minutes it started DUMPING rain. Not just a drizzle…it was almost like a flash flood of water coming out of the skies. My dad got in the car and drove over to the food court to pick Todd up because he would be soaked by the time he walked back to the room. Todd didn’t have his cell phone on him and didn’t know my dad was coming. My dad said that Todd finally came out and started to make a run for it carrying all of these pizza boxes, and he ran right past the car. My dad kept honking at him until he stopped and realized who it was, and came back to the car. When he got in, he was already drenched.

We checked the weather for the rest of the evening online and it said it was going to be heavy rain until morning. We talked about it and decided to skip the evening at DHS and go to DTD instead. We still had shopping to get done and it would be mostly inside. Apparently, the rest of the population of Orlando had the same idea as us, because the place was packed with people.

We got there around 7:00 pm, and headed right for the World of Disney. Todd offered to run around to the Christmas store to pick up the ornament that we had personalized for Dylan, and he said he would find me in WoD. I’m glad that we arranged a place to meet or he would never have found us. I have never seen it so crowded in that store. It was almost impossible to push a stroller because people were everywhere and the aisles always had someone in front of you. I wasn’t in a hurry but I felt like I was just inching along.

Todd came & found me and showed me the ornament that we had gotten for Dylan. I love it! It is so perfect as a reminder of his first trip to WDW.

It took us about an hour to get through WoD, but we finally made it. After all of that, the only things I ended up buying were a necklace for me and some lollipops shaped like Mickey heads for people at work.

ry%3D480

By now it was raining less hard and Todd said he wanted to go look at the jewelry at the Pick a Pearl station. I was surprised he wanted to go look but I wasn’t complaining so we all headed over to the outdoor booth. On the way there he said that he had already picked out a necklace for me! He said the only catch was that it was a pre-set necklace so I wouldn’t get to pick an oyster and have it opened. I have never been much of a “pearl” person, but the necklace that he picked was perfect for me. It had a dark grey pearl set into a twisted silver setting. Very unique. It was beautiful and I loved it! It didn’t matter that I couldn’t pick an oyster because this was so much more special. He is so good to me, and he is such a good husband. I’m so lucky to have him.

ry%3D480

After we purchased the necklace, we stopped into the Basin store on the way back to the car. This is in my top 3 favorite stores in DTD. I love that you can smell the soaps from about 20 feet away outside. It smells even better when you are inside. My sister gave me a gift certificate to this store for my birthday and I was going to use it on this trip. When I was packing, I went to print the gift certificate and I realized that I could only use it through the online store. I was really bummed. I still went in and looked at everything so that I could decide what I wanted to order online.

We drove home and it was still raining when we left. We got back about 10:30 and I got caught up on my TR. Went to bed about 12:30.

Wow--great update! We didn't have time to see One Man's Dream when we were there--thanks for posting the pix and giving me a sense of it :goodvibes

Looks like the rain ended up messing up your DHS day--now I'm wondering if you get back there to do TSM, RnR and ToT! :confused3

The Christmas ornament is so pretty! And I love the pearl necklace your DH picked out for you!

Poor Dylan, he just didn't care for Sci-Fi at all in the beginning. I am glad that it was just your family assigned to one car. We have shared a car with another couple before and we felt a little out of place.

When our son was younger, we used to do Playhouse Disney every trip. I absolutely hated having to sit on the floor and being all smooshed in. By the time we came out of the show, our legs and feet were all cramped up. But, it is great for the little kids.

I hate that it started storming and ya'll had to miss going back to Hollywood Studios. Oh well, just gives you guys an excuse to go back to Disney again.

I absolutely love Basin at Downtown Disney. The smells are heavenly!

Another awesome update!!!:cool1:
Wow, you guys had your share of disney rain!!
Love the christmas ornament!!:santa:
The pearl necklace very pretty too,
I guess your darlin hubby is a keeper!!!

Too bad you didn't get back to DHS...hope it was a park that you did again before you left!!!!
A great alternative...shopping in DTD!!!
I love that ornament! We are trying to convert our tree to all glass ornaments. It looks like glass, right? We got several glass ornaments in the past few Disnet trps, but I plan on getting several more on our December trip this year. That one may be a good one to get! Last year we lost a few ornaments because our dog knocked our tree over one night from drinking the water out of the base!! LOL It wasn't funny then, but kind of is now!

Great update. I hope you made it to DHS again and got a chance to ride TSM. Florida weather is so unpredictable. Love your pearl necklace, I did the pick a pearl thing last year, we started out with just getting an oyster because we thought it would be fun, and I ended up getting a fairly large blue pearl out of it, so we had it set in a ring. It was a lot of fun! The preset stuff that they have is really nice! Again, love the necklace!

One Man's Dream is a really large exhibit. I could spend a lot of time there if I didn't have Dylan with me.

The rain was really intense this night. We do go back to DHS one more day but we don't get to ride everything that we want to. :sad2:

The ornament and the necklace are some of my favorite souveniors on this trip!

We've had to share a car with people at the Sci-Fi before, but we have always been in the back of the car (and it was just Todd & I). I can imagine it felt uncomfortable with others.

Our legs were definitely cramped at the end of Playhouse Disney. It was so cute watching all the kids dance, but they were jumping all over their parents as well. LOL. At least the kids have fun.

Another awesome update!!!:cool1:

The weather was really weird on this whole trip. We expected it to be hot, humid, storming... but it was the extreme of all of those. The storms were heavy and the heat got up to record temperatures. We just tried to deal with it the best that we could. :confused3

LOL, yes Todd is definitely a keeper. I love the necklace he picked out too. It's so ME. I'm glad that he knows what I would like. He never picks things that I hate, which is great.

The ornament is glass, or something breakable at least. We had to pack it carefully for the flight home. That is a bummer about your tree getting knocked over. That almost happened to us a few years ago by our dogs too. We switched to a fake tree 2 years ago and we love it, but I miss the fresh tree smell. On our honeymoon we went a little crazy buying Disney ornaments but now we just add one or 2 a year. Our whole tree is Disney and I love all of the memories from all of the trips.

Great update. I hope you made it to DHS again and got a chance to ride TSM. Florida weather is so unpredictable. We did make it back to DHS but we didn't ride everything that we wanted to. How great that you got a good pearl out of the pick-a-pearl thing! I think that looks like so much fun. We asked if I could still pick the pearl but the lady said that there were only certain settings that I could be able to pick from. So I went with the exact one that he picked out. I love it! Like I said, I've never been a big pearl person (I usually think of a strand of pearls, which is not my style), but the way this pearl was set into the silver was just perfect for me. :cloud9:

What a day you had. Poor darling Dylan. I'm glad he did finally adjust to the darkness of Sci Fi and ate. That is so hard to try to relax and eat when your child is so upset. Sci Fi looks like fun. The table tops on those cars is very narrow tho.

That is too bad about the storm and you didn't get back to do TSM. It is a fun ride. I like TOT and RNR better.
Your necklace is so pretty. Todd is a good man and has excellent taste.

I'm glad all of my grandchildren are too old for Disney Playhouse. I so could not sit on the floor.

All in all a good day for sure. It does get busy at DTD. But oh what good shopping they have. Well worth the crowds.

It's been so long since I've done One Man's Dream. I think I need to do that the next time we go back, whenever that is. Sorry Dylan had some meltdowns that day. Disney with a toddler definitely changes how you do the parks, doesn't it? It sure sounds like you guys got your fill of Florida rain, too! Aww, that ornament is a great idea! I wish we had gotten one of those when we went. It won't be long before you get to use it!

Yep, it's just me and the B/F this time!

As you know, I loved the American Idol Experience. :rotfl2: I do wonder if some of it is staged though..like do our votes really count or is it rigged?

I'm so glad you did One Man's Dream. It really is so interesting to see it all. Have you ever seen the movie at the end? Yeah, I cried.
