~ A 21 month old, a celebrity sighting, & a whole lotta food~2 week trip~ 2/28 update

Aw...Dylan waving to Tigger. Such a cute pic. :goodvibes I'm curious to see how my little guy does with the characters..

That necklace you got is beautiful!

We call it 'The Ball' too!

Hey, we all have our meltdown moments.

Really enjoying your TR...dylan is such a cutie:littleangel:
Will you be doing a yearly WDW visit now that you have
a child to experience the magic with?? I assume you have
done Disneyland since you live in Ca??:goodvibes

I don't know if we will be able to do a yearly visit to WDW. I wish that we could but it is so expensive for us for the travel to get there. When we used to go every year, the plane tickets were much cheaper than they are now. We have taken him to Disneyland twice already since he was born - once when he was 4 months old and one at 14 months. We have a lot of family in Southern Calif, so it is easy for us to jump over to Disneyland since we already go down there to visit everyone. I really hope that we will be able to get back to WDW every year again sometime.

I love your necklace. You've gotten 2 great ones, so far!

Of course Dylan had to have that stuffed animal! Disney pumps something into the air that makes children HAVE to buy plushies! Resistance is futile.

Dylan looks so cute all slathered in sunscreen:rotfl:

Loved your DTD pics! We liked the Goofy's pretzels the best and got an ornament also, but not until our last trip to DTD.

Uh oh, mini meltdown, I don't know anything about those.:rolleyes1

I'm the necklace queen. I love necklaces for some reason, but not really any other type of jewelry. I'm so weird! I think you are right about the Disney air, and I'm sure it works better the older that they get! Yeah, my meltdown was not my proudest moment on this trip. :headache:

Oh my gosh that is sad about your burn! And you know, I realized after reading your update that I have never (unless I was too young to remember) taken the boat over to the World Showcase or watched the American Adventure show! I know, I'm a bad DIS-er!

Oops I posted before I read the latest update!! I feel so bad for Dylan being drowned in sunscreen because my parents used to do that to me LOL! He is so cute with the little dog though!

I think we have only done the boat a couple of times. I always forget about it, but it is really nice to save your legs for all of the walking later in the day. The American Adventure show is so good! It has so many different parts to it and I love them all.

The sunscreen episode was so funny but so sad. He looked like this sweaty, miserable mess but I know he was just greasy. It still makes me laugh to think about it now.

Great update, I love that necklace! Mini-melt down.. sounds like me!:guilty:

I wear the necklace all the time, so I know it was a good purchase. I don't normally melt down but I think all of the Disney planning pressure just finally got to me...

Girl your pictures are FANTASTIC!!!! I'm behind on everything here lately. I wanted to let you know I am reading along although I don't always leave comments. Dylan looks to be having the time of his life! You are going to cherish these pictures FOREVER! Looking forward to more....:goodvibes

Awww, thanks so much Tammy! That is so sweet. :goodvibes I felt like we took so many pictures, but I realized that he is only going to have his first trip once and I didn't want to miss any of it. Your TRs have really inspired me w/ the photo taking because you have so many great ones of your kids.

I just found your TR and I'm all caught up (read the PTR as well). Sounds like a fun trip so far! We are going in 3 weeks with a 17 month old (as well as 8yo and 4yo) so it's neat to see Dylan's experience with the characters and rides. Looking forward to reading the rest!

Rhonda
PTR: http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=2243659

Hi & welcome!! Thanks for reading (& for going back to read the PTR!). You must be getting so excited about your trip being so soon. How is all of your planning going?

Great update! I love all of the pictures, Dylan is so cute. I totally relate to the Goofy's Candy Company question "to wait or not to wait". The lines are always so long, but boy do I love those made to order cookies and pretzels. I walked past the pearl place for three years in a row, and then finally last Dec my BF convinced me that it would be something fun to do, well it was! I had the pearl set in a ring, but had to have it re-set bc I couldn't wear the sterling silver. Glad you had such great trip. Still waiting in suspense for the celeb sighting!

The pearl place is so cool. It's like a little treasure hunt. And I'm so glad that I heard about Goofy's Candy here on the DIS or I probably would have not gone in there since it was so busy. It was a really fun experience and I'm sure it will become a tradition. I'm sorry to tell you that the celebrity sighting it much later in the trip. I'll give you a hint though that it's not anyone like a major movie star. If it had been someone like Brad Pitt, I wouldn't have been able to keep that a secret this long! But I promise that it is a fun story!

Hey, we all have our meltdown moments.

You know, I was a little bummed that at first Dylan did not just embrace the characters w/ open arms, especially since he is such an outgoing little guy. But the more that he was exposed to them, the more accepting he became. You can imagine what goes through their little brains as they are trying to process all that is going on around them at Disney.

The Ball just seems appropriate. It's quick and easy, and everyone knows exactly what you're talking about!

Great update!! How fun that Dylan got to meet Pooh and Friends! He looks adorable in all of that sunscreen kissing his new dog! Precious! I have never tried Goofy's Candy Co. either--we will definitely stop in there next time! I hear you get a lot for your snack credit! Oooh--you need to post a pic of your hat--it sounds super-cute!! And I know what you mean about getting sunburned on your head. I always use the girl's facestick to apply suncreen to my scalp/part. It's no fun getting a sunburned scalp! Can't wait to hear more!

Awww...Dylan looked so precious with his new best friend. Of course, you had to get him.

We're going to DTD for the first time this trip and I'm so excited! Everytime I see another store, I want to shop more. My DH is going to have a heart attack.

What a fantastic day!! Epcot, swimming and DTD witth a visit to goofys for pretzels!! (My favorite also)

Ouch to your burn! I couldn't really see it in the pictures though.

Yea to being a gramma and spoilimg the frandbabies. I LOVE that!!!

Mini meltdowns in the heat are unavoidable sometimes! Looking forward to more updates and pictures!!

Ooooh, I never thought about using snack credits at Goofy's! We've never been on the Dining Plan. I wonder how much you can get there? There was some great stuff in there. I will try to remember to post my hat picture soon. I just need to take a picture of it & get it uploaded. I always end up spraying my hair w/ spray on sunscreen, and then my hair is all greasy for the rest of the day. Yuck!

DTD is a lot of fun. There are so many unique stores there, and we still have a lot that we have never been in. I think I've said before that I am not much of a shopper, but I get really excited to go to DTD.

The burn shows up better in the pictures from the next couple of days. The first day it was letting me believe that it wasn't too bad. :) My mom actually did really well about not spoiling Dylan too much on this trip. It was hard for her, but Todd would always say something like "He doesn't really need it" and put it back. I think he was just thinking about how much stuff we were going to have to haul on the plane with us.

How cool! Their birthday's are 13 days apart. Did you have a great time with him when you went? Are you doing a TR?

I don't know what happened, but I missed lots of updates! I guess somehow I didn't subscribe? :confused3 I'm all caught up now. I did have a great time on our trip, it was a lot of fun seeing Disney through his eyes. I think I might do a TR. I actually have the first part all written up but haven't gotten around to posting it yet. I didn't take notes intending to do one, so I have to piece things together by my pictures! I'll put up the link here if I do one.

This picture is so sweet!

I love your family pictures, they are beautiful! I know what you mean about never being in them. I take tons of pictures of every event, and then look back only to realize I'm not in anything!

David loved that playground too! I would love to stay at AKL someday. That pool is amazing!

After this, we had to hit the pastry shop. This is a MUST DO for us and I will show you why. It is this little dessert called the Napoleon and it is the best pastry EVER! I showed a picture of it in my PTR, but here is another one. I got an éclair and we shared them both, but compared to the Napoleon, the éclair was just not worth it to me. Todd always says I should just get my own Napoleon but they are huge and I couldn’t finish it on my own.

ry%3D480

That Napoleon looks sooo good! I wish I could hop on a plane right now to have one! :lmao:

I guess Dylan wanted to sit like the big boys on the ledge and it was really cute.

ry%3D480

This is so adorable!

It sounds like you guys had a great day at Epcot and DTD! It's too bad it was so hot though. I have never eaten at the Rose and Crown, for pretty much the same reasons. Every time we are there it's always so hot that the food doesn't sound good to us; and its just so much more expensive than the counter service place. It seems like they serve mostly the same stuff?

I love your pictures of SSE. They are beautiful.

Mini-meltdown? Oh, no! :scared1: Looking forward to reading more!

You should do a TR! Please give me your link if you decide to do it. I like reading other people's who have kids near Dylan's age. Thank you for your comments about the pictures. I'm so happy to have some of all 3 of us together! That doesn't happen too often.

I felt the same way about the Rose & Crown. I've heard that the food is good, but it seems a little expensive .

One mini-meltdown coming up soon....I'm not proud of it, but it is what it is. :)

Dylan woke up crying in the middle of the night again. At home when he does this, it usually takes him 5 minutes & he will go back to sleep. This time, no such luck. He just kept crying and he was sleeping in our room (now that my parents were in the other bedroom) so I got up and rocked him until he went back to sleep. Not sure what had woken him up but there are just some nights where he can’t settle himself back down.

After a night like that, he usually will sleep later in the morning. Nope, he got up at 7:30 am (remember, he went to bed at midnight and it wasn’t consistent sleep throughout the night). So we all got up even though we were pretty tired still. Today was a free day and we had a couple of ideas of what we wanted to do. The main thing we had talked about for today was to go to the Wide World of Sports complex where there was a massive volleyball tournament going on. For those of you who did not read my PTR, Todd is a volleyball coach at the same high school that I work at. Volleyball is his passion. He coaches almost year-round (between the high school & club leagues) and this tournament was one that he considered taking his club team to compete in. Obviously, we decided against participating but he wanted to go watch for a couple of hours.

Todd took my dad to go pick up the rental car that my parents would be using for the next week. My dad had a conference at the end of the trip, so they would need their own transportation. Since we wanted to go to watch volleyball, they were probably going to go shopping or do something else. While Todd & my dad were gone, I was checking my email on the computer and I realized that it had gotten really quiet…as in, I didn’t know what Dylan was up to. I found him out on the patio by himself in one of the chairs. He had taken his blanket and a book out there and was just having some quiet time by himself. I almost cried, it was such a sweet moment to observe without him knowing that I was watching him.

ry%3D480

Todd called from the car place after they had been gone for 45 minutes, and asked about the car reservations I had made for my dad. I told him that it was for Thursday (today) to Thursday (next week). He said that my dad was saying that since they were flying home next Friday that he wanted to go back & pick it up tomorrow. That way they only paid for a week and they had it until they day they left. I got frustrated because when I booked the car rental for them, I had called my dad and discussed all of the details over the phone. I had found him a great rate online and he told me to book it right then. So I did. Now it appeared that he thought I had booked the wrong days.

I asked if he could just pay for one more day and pick it up now. Tomorrow we were scheduled to be in a park and I didn’t want to take time out of the day to pick it up then. Todd asked my dad and he said he didn’t want to pay for the extra day. Now I started getting really frustrated. We all had different plans for today and if we had to share a car, it would totally change everything. I said that to Todd and he said he didn’t know what to do, so I said to just come home.

Here comes the mini-meltdown. Looking back on it, I can tell you exactly what the problem was. I am the one who had planned every detail of this trip. Any time that I had asked the others what they wanted to do, they always said they would be happy doing anything. So I made decisions based on what I thought everyone would like. My parents had been very busy with their lives before the trip & my mom was retiring, so they did not have a lot of time to deal w/ planning the trip. So I was going out of my way to help them out and take care of details so that they didn’t have to (example : booking their rental car for them).

Right at this moment, I realized that I was still feeling like a travel agent and I felt like if something went wrong, that it was my fault. I had been the person pushing us to stay on a schedule. No one else even knew what the schedule was. So at this moment I decided I was sick of being the travel agent & I just wanted to enjoy my vacation that I worked so hard to plan for.

I went to talk to my mom about it and I ended up venting pretty good about the whole thing. I told her that I had confirmed the days of the rental car with dad before I booked it and now he thought I had made a mistake. I explained how all of our plans for the day would be changed by not getting the second car. Then I complained about how I didn’t feel like I was getting to enjoy myself on my own trip.

Wow! I threw a decent temper tantrum, didn’t I? I think that I was already a little sensitive because the night before when we were driving home from DTD, a couple of people (who will remain nameless) were complaining about the ADR for O’hana that I had made for later in the trip because it was a very late dining. I had said it was the only time that I could get and I knew that everyone had wanted to eat there. I had even asked them at the time if I should book it or not and they all had said yes. So here we were a couple of months later and they wanted to know why I had booked it so late. :scared1: :headache:

So all of this came to a head in this moment. I just said that I didn’t feel like people appreciated all the work that I had put into this, and all I wanted was to enjoy my trip and not be in charge anymore. She, of course, could see that I was not mentally balanced at the moment :) and said she would take care of it. So she called my dad back and told him to just pay for the extra day and pick up the car. He said that it was going to cost $100 extra for one day. I didn’t want them to have to pay that so I said to just pick it up tomorrow and to come home.

When they got home I talked to Todd and vented some more and he got me to calm down. He understood where I was coming from, but neither of us wanted them to have to pay an extra $100, so we would just have to deal with it. So we discussed our options. We decided that we would have to give up on going to watch volleyball. Todd said he was ok with that because he looked up the ticket prices and it would have been $12 each for us to get in for the day and we would have only been there for 2 hours. So he felt like it wasn’t worth it.

I was still not completely over the whole thing, and all I wanted to do was go to the pool for a while. So we decided to take Dylan swimming for an hour and then Todd would take my parents to go shopping while Dylan took his nap. Looking back on it now, I feel bad that I vented it all out, but I think that I just felt responsible for everyone to have a good time and I ended up not being able to enjoy myself because I was always worried about details.

So we made our way out to the pool for Dylan to swim. We have taken him swimming a few times before and we hoped that he would be excited to get in the pool today. We should not have worried about it.

Ready to go swimming

ry%3D480

He was eager to get in the pool so Todd got in with him while my dad & I took some pictures & video first. Here is a picture of the Fountains pool. Todd & Dylan are right in the middle. Isn’t it a nice pool?

ry%3D480

My friend Erin had gotten Dylan this little floaty-ring that her son really liked when they went swimming. I’m so glad that we used this instead of the floaties that go on their arms. He was a little unsure at first, but once he got the hang of it, he was really happy. Here are some pictures of pool time.

We had a great time and it was so nice to be outside and not be sweating! It was still hot though and by the time we made the 5 minute walk back to our room all of us were completely dry. We got back at 12:30 and had sandwiches for lunch. We discussed plans for the rest of the day.

After lunch, Todd dropped my parents off at the outlet mall and came back to the room. I put Dylan down for a nap and then I took a shower and did some laundry. The plan for the evening was for all of us to go to DHS from 5 – 9 pm and have dinner somewhere in the park. We hadn’t ridden any roller coasters yet and we needed to fulfill a little bit of the roller coaster junkie in us.

Dylan slept for 3 ½ hours during this nap! I finally had to wake him up so that we could get ready to go. Right before I woke him up it started to rain. Then the rain turned into a downpour. Again, this storm rolled in out of nowhere. We were swimming under a cloudless sky just a couple hours earlier and now it looked like this outside.

ry%3D480

My heart sank as I realized that our DHS plans were probably going on hold. A decision was made to have dinner first and then figure out if we would go to the park. We decided to eat off-property at another restaurant that I had read about on the DIS but we had ever been to. We headed off to Bahama Breeze for dinner, and we realized that it was only about 3 minutes away from us on the SR535. The outside of the restaurant is SO cute. Of course, I don’t have any pictures of it, sorry! It looks like this little Caribbean building and it has a lot of shutters on all of the windows, so it looks really breezy and casual. Todd dropped us off and we all dashed inside so we wouldn’t get too wet from the rain. Once we got inside we were told that it would be a 15 minute wait, so we sat in the waiting area and soaked in the atmosphere. I can’t say enough about how cute this place was!

We were seated in a table right next to a window and our waitress was professional but not that friendly. I guess everywhere can’t be Disney, right? The menu looked great, although a lot of it was seafood, and neither Todd nor I like seafood. We picked two items that we both liked so that we could share them. For an appetizer we got the Jamaican Grilled Chicken Wings and for the main course we got the Jerk Chicken Pasta.

ry%3D480

ry%3D480

ry%3D480

The food was good but it was VERY spicy. Now, I can be a bit of a wimp when it comes to spicy things sometimes, but Todd likes things spicy and he was even commenting on it. We barely gave Dylan anything because he would have not been very happy w/ us. I wish we would have brought him a PB & J sandwich. The wings were extremely spicy, even without the sauce they gave you to dip them in. The pasta was very good but the flavor kept building with every bite, so by the end it was a little too much for me.

Overall, I would recommend this place. It was average prices for dinner and it was a different experience for us. We would probably order different things next time, even though what we chose was good.

The rain was finally letting up, but no one seemed to want to go to DHS anymore. Todd suggested that we try to go to a movie at DTD. We used to love to go to movies before we had Dylan and we are really bad about scheduling a babysitter ahead of time, so we don’t go to the movies very often anymore. My parents said they would watch him if we wanted to go. So we dropped them off at the condo and headed over to DTD. Todd really wanted to see the new Star Trek movie and I really did not. I’m sorry to those of you who like the whole Star Trek series but it has never been my thing. Most of the other movies had already started so we went to Star Trek. By the time we got in and sat down, we had missed the first few minutes of the movie but it wasn’t hard to catch on.

I will be the first to admit when I am wrong and in this case….I was wrong. This movie was awesome! I really like action movies and this had a lot of action. It also did not have all of the over-done (horrible costumed) bad guys that I hate in all of the other Star Trek movies. The bad guy in this movie was SCARY and totally believable. After it was over I told Todd that if all of the other movies had been like this one, I would be totally into Star Trek. I’m actually looking forward to any sequels that they do.

We got home by 9:45 and my mom said Dylan had been really good. We put him to bed at 10:15 ~ early tonight because tomorrow is a park day and we wanted to get an early start. We parents had seen Star Trek already so we talked about it for a while before going to bed at 11:00. For a day that started out so crummy, it ended up being really fun by eating at a new place and going to a movie. Who would have thought?

Next up… the MK!!

Hello! Your mini meltdown was very mini and very understandable. You gave people ample time to give their opinions on your choices and everything was supposedly fine and now your plans aren't fine. Grr. I think all of us OCDisney planners feel the same sense of responsibility for everyone's trip experience and its normal and common to get irritated, or pout in my case, when those plans don't work out right or people suddently don't like the plans we made. Sometimes venting helps.

We had the same Star Trek experience! My husband was dying to see the movie and I was not interested but went for him and I really liked it! The young Captain Kirk is quite the cutie.:)

I have no idea how I was 4 pages behind. But 3 awesome updates. First, hate it you burned your face. I burn my ear all the time. Of course I was there with a black eye and a concrete burn on my face. It's that falling issue I have.

Dylan looked so cute with all the sunscreen and I love his "Woof Woof". He did too by the looks of it. My hair is thin on top so I always have sunscreen on it. I've burned it a couple of times and it hurts.

I think you are changing my mind on Morocco. That has never been my favorite country and that is where Sheri had her mini-meltdown. Next time (if she allows me to go with her) I will look at everything. Your pictures have given me incentive.

I don't understand why parents just don't do what they are told. :confused3
I have not seen the Star Trek yet but my grandsons have seen it 3 times already. I will wait till it gets to the $1.00 movie. We love to go to the movie when on vacay. Night at the Museum had just started when we were there but we never got a chance to go. We did go see it last night at the $1.00 theater.

We also ate at Bahama Breeze. We really enjoyed it and our server was really great. Of course when you have 9 people chatting and taking pictures and having such fun it's kinda hard not to get in the spirit. And luckily it wasn't busy. I wish we had one in our area. I loved the coconut shrimp.

BTW I loved your necklace. Sheri is always looking for necklaces too. Had we not been in melt-down mode I bet she would have found one there.

I promise I will not get behind again. Really good updates.

Ginny

You had every right to have your meltdown. Since I was the one doing all of the planning for our trip last year, I know what you mean about keeping a schedule. Thank goodness I didn't have the problem that you had. All and all you were still able to enjoy your day ad that's what matters in the end. :)

I can completely understand your mini-meltdown! Back in 1997 I had planned a trip for 12 of us for 10 days for my oldest 3 kids, 2 of their friends from Oregon and my late husb's sis from Oregon and his brother, wife & 2 kids from WV. I gladly paid for everything so all they needed to spend $$ on was souvies. Well my husb's bro and wife started complaining the 2nd night we were there about the bus trip to Hoop-de-doo show, saying on "their last trip, they didn't have all this trouble, what in the world was I thinking of doing it this way, blah blah blah" lol. Anyway by the time the dinner was over, I wasn't speaking to them (or their kids for that matter who took advantage of charging stuff to the room, etc.). My husb's sister asked me the next morning what was wrong on our way to the church service at Poly and I had a meltdown saying no one was appreciating anything, if it wasn't for the money I had just inherited from my brother's death, this trip wouldn't have been possible, and I was sad my husband never got to visit WDW cuz back in 1994 we had drove all the way from Oregon to visit Florida and he died in the hotel room from a heart attack before our trip got started. Plus the last time my husb's bro and sis-in-law got to go to WDW was their one and only time from a trip I saved for over a year to treat them with as a thank you for taking us in when my husband died.

To say the least, my good sis-in-law got an earful :lmao: But she completely understood and then I felt horrible for having the meltdown because when we got to the church service, it was based on forgiveness! Then to top it all off, at the end of the trip on our last night all of the family treated me and my kids to a dinner at Fulton's Crab and had a cake in honor of me. (there were a couple of other incidents before this where they still were unappreciative but I shrugged it off and had to decide if I was going to have a good time, I had to take the good with the bad).

Sorry for the long story!! Dylan was so precious sitting out on the patio reading his book - what a precious moment! He is so adorable!

I'm glad you all had a great day in spite of plans being changed - sometimes it all does work out.

It does work out in the end but they shouldn't have given you a hard time to get to that point. You did such a kind thing for the family members. I just hope when they talk about it now they remember the good times and let the bad times go. And yes we can all use a sermon on forgivness daily.

Totally understandable about the mini-meltdown! I seem to have those on every trip too. It is just so hard when you are planning everything and people don't always know or appreciate all the work that goes in behind the scenes.

I love Bahama Breeze too. Their coconut shrimp is the best, and one trip I had a Key Lime martini- to die for! I didn't see it on the menu the last time I went though- bummer!

I got a mention in your TR...yay!!

I don't ever remember being scared of characters as a kid, but I imagine it must be a little overwhelming with how big they are. Dylan handled them really well though, and the picture of him waving to Tigger is too cute! Poor little guy looked like he was so greasy with all of that sunscreen, but at least he was protected. I don't know what it is about Disney, but I burned myself too on my trip...you can't really tell in your pictures though and I'm glad it didn't leave you with a scar across your cheek!

I totally understand why you had a mini meltdown. I hate when people tell you they don't care then complain, but I'm glad your day turned out well! Can't wait to read more!

Even if the meltdown was mini, I still felt bad about it afterwards. Of course, I was so upset in the moment that I couldn't express myself very well, so it felt like I talked about it longer than I should have. I just really wanted Todd to be able to go watch volleyball and I was bummed for him that it didn't happen. He was a good sport about it though. I just don't think anyone realizes how much time a person can put into planning, so they don't think anything about voicing their opinion after the fact.

Yes, Star Trek was awesome. I can't believe I typed those words, but it's true. I always said that I never understood the appeal of the original Captain Kirk, but it made a lot more sense in this movie. He did a great job acting as well. I kept laughing every time he got beat up because it seems like everyone in the movie got to punch him at some point. :)

Ginny

I felt so bad looking at Dylan w/ the sunscreen but there was nothing I could do at that point. He just needed a bath. He will look back on those pictures someday and ask "what were you guys trying to do to me?" LOL.

I have never walked through Morocco before this trip. We always just walked right past it, and I have no idea why. I'm so glad we tried the lunch place because it inspired us to stay a little longer. It really is a beautiful place to just browse for a while.

I wish we had a $1 theater. We used to have one where we used to live in Southern Cal. It's a really good action movie. Our waitress at Bahama Breeze was professional enough, but it was really busy that night and you could tell she was just going through the motions. I'm glad we went though because I had heard so many good things about it.

Thanks for reading!

I totally hear ya about the venting!!! It is so hard
to travel with others without some disagreements
even with family!!! Maybe even more so with family!!!:snooty:
