A 10 hour surgery - wasted.

My dad had major surgery yesterday to deal with quite a few cancers. The doctors had one plan, but after 10 hours we found out that they did not find it necessary to do everything they had planned. I won't get graphic, but my dad's digestive tract and "exits" were all to be removed and replaced with external bags - not fun for a 73 years young guy!

However, the doctor's down scaled the surgery drastically - leaving my dad with a much more pleasant life style.

Well - I just got off the phone with his doctor. Turns out they found far more cancer (liver, etc.) and changed their minds because they wanted to give him a better quality of life - not because he is doing better Feel like I just got hit over the head with a hammer.

So - you know I'm looking for pixie dust! My dad has got to recoup from this major surgery so he can go duck hunting, skit shooting, fishing - and can paint a few more pictures (a truly gifted artist!).

My thoughts to you and your dad. My mom is dealing with advanced colon cancer and it's extremely difficult to know there's very little chance we'll win this battle in the end. I'm sorry you have to go through this. I hope you'll enjoy your time together and make some great memories.

I am sorry. I went through the same thing with my dad. They opened him up with the hopes of taking the cancer out of his colon, and giving him a colostomy bag. However, upon opening him theny found it in his liver, etc. They closed him back up and said that it was not worth it because once its in the liver, there is little to do but chemo, etc. It was so heartbreaking to hear that, and I cannot imagine my father's reaction when they told him. Make sure you take every option given to you - tell him to not give up...stay focused on remission, etc. There has been so much progress even in the 4 yrs since my dad passed. Prayers to you all..

I went through the same with my dad (he passed away a few years back). We all felt helpless, but one of the things that helped my dad to keep going was seeing me with him, and knowing how much I loved him. He kept battling, just to make sure we would all be OK. The same lessons he taught me I'm tyrying to pass on to my DD.

There's been a lot of progress since then, so hang in there. Seeing you with him, and knowing that you love him and that you're there will do wonders, I assure you.
