90's Grunge/Alternative Rock

Mozart died in 1791. Beethoven was born in 1770 and took some lessons from Mozart before he died. Beethoven's early work was in the late 1790's. I don't think he knew Eddie Vedder.

Probably didn't meet Eddie Vedder, but if you ask Fred Durst, I'm sure he'll be happy to tell you he taught Luddie how to tickle the ivories.

I can't agree with this statement. There has been no more bad music in this decade then there was in any other. We just tend to forget about the garbage after it has passed.

Great bands of this decade:

Shinedown
Seether
Breaking Benjamin
Sevendust
Dark new Day
KoRn
Skindred
Audioslave
Velvet Revolver
Staind

That's just a start. And no synthsized crap to be found.

Anne

Chevelle
Godsmack
Disturbed
Foo Fighters
Muse
System of a Down
The Used.........

if it doesn't have guitars and drums, it's not music

My argument against "rock music" from this decade:

Theory of a Staind NickelCreed

Every single rock band sounds the same these days! I loved it when you heard a new song on the radio and you could instantly tell it was Soundgarden's Chris Cornell or Moist's David Usher or REM's Michael Stipe or Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder.

I love the whole soundtrack to "Singles". The 90's sure had some great music! :rolleyes1

I just starting playing this again today in my car. I love this soundtrack.

My XM station is Fred.

That is true alternative music born in the anti disco late 70's and morphed into the new wave/alternative 80s.

I found that most of the 90's grunge rock was NOT ALTERNATIVE! Most of it was mainstreamed into the top 40 radio scene early on. I always cracked up about how people went on and on on how Red Hot Chili Peppers and Nirvana were alternative... NOT IN THE LEAST!

True alternative had an edge, somethign more, nothing that was "radio ready" in any sense.. they didn't have stylists and sometimes not even videos. True alternative was original, and well all those 90s alt rock stuff is NOT original.

I couldn't stand Chris on American Idol, because all he had was the 90's crap that is the same for every performance. Its all yelly, out of tune and just crap for lyrics. Everytime he stepped up to the mic, you knew he would scream out indeteriminable lyrics.

As for Mozart, you would know when he was born and died if you listed to Rock Me Amadeaus! (German version is way better thant the American version)

I like killer woodwind sections to- I have a clarinet and an oboe player in my house!

First off, take a listen to Theory of a Deadman's second CD. The one that "The Chad" DIDN"T get his hands on (Thank God). It doesn't not sound like "all the other bands out there." I'm hoping with all the shake up going on at RoadRunner right now that they'll end up on Virgin or Bieler or somebody who knows how to get a band out there from the ground up.

Next, listen to what Creed REALLY was once you took Scott Staphinfection out of the band--Alter Bridge. Mark Tremonti is one of the more talented musicians out there these days.

Staind has gotten, well, tired. I actually asked Mike Mushock about this when I interviewed him, and his reply was basically that they write music that they like and hopefully the fans will like it too. "Yo've got to be true to yourself" is an actual quote from him.

And Nickelback, simply put, Kroeger sold out. Their first could of CD's were great! (Curb and the State) But you can see it on SSU, Kroeger figured out how to write a radio hit, and started to run with it.

That said, there's plenty of other great music out there. New releases by Three Days Grace, KoRn, Breaking Benjamin, Halestorm, Seether, and P.O.D. have all earned 4.5 or 5 stars from me in the past six months, and I expect that several other not yet released CD's I'm waiting on review copies of will earn the same grades.

You want the garbage that's floating around right now, take a listen to Hinder. Hinder got signed only because they are managed by Nickelback's TM. I hope they figure out how to ask if you want fries with that burger, because three years from now that's about where they will be.

You're referring to college radio alternative.

Back in the late 80's -early l90's there were stations that played on "mainstream" non college stations XM Fred style music...

One station was in Cleveland, and one I could hear from my home in S. NJ. I'm not sure if it was broadcast out of DE or the shore area but it was not Princetons', Stocktons, Glassboro (now Rowan) or Trenton States radio station. I was a Stockton DJ for a while, and interestingly enough, there were some genre programming and some top 40 there as well.

I'm not sure if this non college station was just some person broadcasting from the Pine Barrens.. but it was good.

Yes, there were a scattered few commerical stations that played alternative & new wave (remember that term?), but that style of music was always the denizen of college radio--well except WSOU... :rotfl: :rotfl:

BTW--Remember the Neighborhoods? They're supposed to be doing a reunion soon. I heard the Replacements might be doing one as well.

And I agree, I never thought of Nirvana as Alternative, they were grunge. AND RHCP kind of defy all classification, but they are not grunge or alternative, I'd probably call them funk/rock.

Replacements are doing a tour. I read it in either the July or August Blender. I was more of the Dead Milkman and Mojo Nixon fan though... I miss them!

The older I get, the less tolerant I become about mainstream music. I absolutely loathe anything like American Idol. When not listening to XM, I tune in to our local NPR station WUKY that plays "adult contemporary" which is much better than you would think. They play folks like Ryan Adams, Neko Case, Patti Griffin and a lot of what I call hippy bluegrass-The Yonder Mountain String Band and Old Crow Medicine Show (which is my personal favorite right now). Now that I think about it, the older I get the more I like any kind of real music. I wouldn't have been caught dead listening to Bluegrass or jazz growing up, but now I love both. Go figure.

Oh my, this is my era!

And on the more Alternative side:
Morrissey and The Smiths
Kate Bush
REM

Kate Bush only had one album in 1994...
But I loooove the Smiths!

And, The Smashing Pumpkins, anybody?

ETA: Radiohead, definately.

I love love love Kate Bush. I was such a Kate freak that I even had her first release in FRENCH on cassette. I had everything that she released. I'm not that crazy about her newest album.. I listened to it, but wasn't wowed by it.

My boyfriend in high school and I our "album" was Hounds of Love, especially the second side. We would put that on the turntable and listen to it LOUD!

Before there was Nirvana and the other grunges bands of the Northwest, there were The Pixies. Nirvana's Kurt Cobain as much as admitted that they patterned their music after The Pixies, in fact. If you're a grunge fan and haven't ever heard them, check out "Doolittle" for a good intro. They were an awesome band!

I LOVE LOVE LOVE Running Up The Hill and Wake The Witch. Did you get The Dreaming?

RADIOHEAD. Ah, love them!

Nirvana
Smashing Pumkins
The Smiths (Love Moz's solo stuff as well.)

Jimbo...The Pixies are awesome. Glad you mentioned them :thumbsup2

My favorite Kate album is "The Kick Inside". And I even like the duet "Don't Give Up" with Peter Gabriel!

Also, I love the Pixies!! Oh and the Sugercubes in early Bjork days!

I am a HUGE Morrissey freak! I love pretty much everything he does. Plus he's not too hard on the eyes either! :cloud9:

As for favorite '90's one-hit wonders, I am CRAZY about the songs "Far Behind" by Candlebox and "Possum Kingdom" by the Toadies. Every time they come on the radio (less and less these days), I turn it up until my ears bleed.

I love a lot of the bands already mentioned in this thread, most notably SoundGarden. (I'm now getting my Cornell fix via AudioSlave...one of the best bands EVER)

But I'm surprised that no one's mentioned Jane's Addiction (Been Caught Stealing is another ear-bleeder for me)

I also adored Toad the Wet Sprocket - though I realize they're a bit more easy listening than most of the groups being discussed. I had 3 separate "Acoustic Dance Party" CD's mysteriously disappear from my home before I finally just couldn't find it anywhere, any longer. So, if anyone has that TTWS Cd, I would pay dearly for it. PM me!

I Love

Smashing Pumpkins
Nirvana
Foo Fighters
Weezer
Garbage
Poe
Pavement
Guided by Voices
oh and I can't beleive I forgot Radiohead!!!
