I've never eaten at the Brown Derby and really want to. I have two trips coming up. I'm taking my 9 y/o GD to WDW for a surprise trip Jan 2nd-8th. It will be her Christmas gift from me, so can't talk to her about it. I'm also taking my 73 y/o mom for her first ever trip to WDW Dec 9th-18th. When I made ADRs for my Dec trip my mom originally wanted Mama Melrose for the Fantasmic Pkg, but then changed her mind to the Brown Derby. Unfortunately I was not able to get it then and decided to wait for later ADRs times (which we got last week). Meanwhile I booked the Brown Derby just for lunch for my Jan trip with my GD. With it being January I'm thinking we won't need the Fantasmic Pkg, so booked Sci-Fi for her for dinner that night. Now that I have the Brown Derby for my Jan trip, I'm second guessing it for my GD's Jan trip.

Anyway my question is: Would a 9 y/o enjoy the Brown Derby for lunch? She is very well behaved, but does not like anything exotic (or what she would call strange). She is a picky eater and likes meat, potatoes, corn, hamburgers, hot dogs, salads, etc (in other words plain food). If I do cancel the lunch ADR for the Brown Derby where else would you recommend I take her? We ate at the Backlot Express and at Hollywood & Vine this past January and she was not impressed with either. I've also eaten at Mama Melrose and while I enjoyed it, I don't think she would. I don't really want to leave MGM just to eat lunch though.

i think a 9 yr old girl might get into the "dress up" feel of it. it is nice... like silver coffee service nice , very "adult" but not stuffy so i think my girls would have felt very "grown up and special" there at that age( my oldest daughter's favorite place was someplace similar as a preteen). the food would probably be ok ( allears has menus, i know we had non exotic steak but don't really remember what else was there). kids were in the minority but definetly there when we were so i wouldn't worry about taking a 9 yr old..it is so different than a character type "little kids" place i think she would enjoy it. i'd probably go with the " i think you are finally old enough to enjoy this fancy place now "angle since what kid that age doesn't want ot be an adult :)

i have to say it is probably my favorite place in wdw as it is elegant but not snooty.

My almost 9 year old complained like mad because there were no chicken nuggets on the menu (we called that last trip "Nuggets around the World"). I finally got him to settle for the grilled chicken w/smashed potatoes and veggies from the kids menu. He licked the plate clean and asked if he could order another please!!! My kids are (or were) also well mannered for a little more upscale restaurant and REALLY enjoyed eating at BD. We'll be back on our next trip.

We took our 3 year old and 8 year old DSs to the Brown Derby last year. It is on my older DS's "must-do" list this year! He loved it and really enjoyed the restaurant. I think your GD would love it -- the desserts alone are worth the stop! Oh, and the Cobb salad!

My daughter, and nephews (10, 8) loved the Brown Derby. I can't tell you how they begged to go back for the fish, and the rolls!

Better go to www.allearsnet.com and check out the menu to make sure your young lady likes the type of dishes offered there.

Even tho it's not on the children's menu, a child in my party was offered a hamburger by the waiter. He said it's not listed but it's always available. It looked like a really good burger too!

We took the kids (7 & 4) to HBD for lunch one time and they enjoyed the meal. DS4 got the grilled chicken without any sides and they had no problems making it for him, and DS7 got hot dogs. Both polished off their meal.

I honestly think she'll do fine. We saw quite a few kids there at the same time. The atmosphere was relaxed, boisterous, and certainly not hush-hush high end, if you know what I mean.

I am almost positive when we eat there with my 2 boys we were able to get chicken and fries. Ask when you arrive. We loved the meal!
