One thing you may ask your doc is to see if they will allow you to take a prescription antibiotic such as a Z-pack (if he can take tablets) given your history of pneumonia, with you just in case. You may not need it but given the travel etc.. having the actual prescription with you negates the need for emergency treatment. You can also consult your nursing line to ascertain if and when to take so you arent flirting with any element of needless resistance etc... for the sake of it.

Perhaps, but this is also coming from a mom whose son has been hospitalized twice in the last 4 years for phnemonia that started exactly like this.. So maybe I do need to "relax", but that is a bit tougher to do given our previous hospitalizations (first time was 5 days in hospital, 2nd time was 6 days in hospital).

I am sure he will be ok, and I hope that it will be a distant memory by the time we leave, but that doesn't mean we aren't gonna worry a bit more in our case.

Aww that sounds absolutely awful These bugs can be really nasty sometimes! It's been a while since my boy has been very ill but every time he gets that cough and a fever I am instantly worried it's going to get worse. He's so little and doesn't have much meat on him (sounds like your DD as well!)

We were at a playground today just to get outside and get some fresh air and he played happily for a couple hours so I am relieved to see him starting to bounce back.. he was totally wiped afterwards and went to bed super early but it's improvement so I'll take it I'm sure we'll be ok to travel, just as long as he doesn't suddenly go downhill which is how pneumonia goes. We are cutting it close which makes me so nervous, lol.

Perhaps it's not a great idea to expose him to more potential germs right now, especially the ones you'd find in your average playground? He also could be exposing other kids to the same virus he has, as well, especially if he is coughing.

Yes, of course I fully considered that risk, however he and his sister have been cooped up for days, both of them were going totally insane (we homeschool so getting outside at some point is our lifeline). He knows not to touch his face and he was washing his hands constantly with hand sanitizer plus I gave them a good wash in warm soapy water after we got back, it was a call I felt comfortable with making as I knew the fresh air would lift his spirits and do him good, which it did. I am actually far more concerned about taking him into a doctors office. As for exposing other kids, he has always been taught to cough into his elbow and the park was empty with kids being in school, it's a playground that barely ever has kids visit because of it's location on a busy street which is why I chose it. Also, when it comes to playgrounds in general whether coughing or not, I have always been diligent in washing my kids hands after leaving a playground because of potential germs, every parent I know is the same way.

I am planning on asking his doctor today about that, just incase. Usually in the past it would be the second day after the fever broke in which the fever would return and he would rapidly decline in the case of pneumonia. This morning he's still coughing a little bit (which will last probably 2-3 weeks for him), but his fever is still gone so I think we will be alright Just need to get his ear checked out!

The beauty of a Z-pack is that it will treat upper respiratory as well as sinus / ear infection so it will cover all bases. Sadly, I learned the hard way while away with work and ended up in the ER..... $12,422 later haha... All would've been negated with a $7 Z-pack ;o)

Yikes!! That is crazy!! Our health care system runs pretty differently so we've never paid a dime for any medical care my son has received which is a huge relief.

I have never heard of z-pack but we did get a prescription today as my suspicions were correct that he has an ear infection. It's a 3 day prescription so he'll be done it by the time we leave. His doctor also said that if there was indeed an ear infection in his chest that it would take care of that as well although his lungs sounded healthy. It does give me peace of mind having him on antibiotics. He also said he wasn't contagious after his fever was gone so going to Disneyland will be ok, he asked if we could pack him so he could come too, lol. Hard to believe we are 4 days out, I've been so consumed with getting him healthy that I've barely considered what needs to be done before we leave.

Sounds like it is a Z-pac (Zithromax, Azithromycin) if it's a 3 day antibiotic. It should work really well if he hasn't taken it before. Hope it does!

I agree with everyone else, he should be better in a day or two. Just keep him hydrated and be thankful that your trip is 9 days away and not tomorrow! I'm a medical professional in a pediatric practice and I deal with tummy bugs every day. Most important thing is to keep him hydrated and he'll be better in no time.
