FISH EXTENDER FAQ

So just what exactly is a fish and just why does it need extending?
Text adapted from GoofyIsAsGoofyDoes

The fish is a combination wall decoration/ornament and message clip that is attached to the wall outside every cabin door. The Cast Members (crew) use them to leave messages, official forms, or invitations for the occupants of the cabin as needed. Its kind of like a glorified fridge-magnet. On the Disney Wonder, it is always a fish design. The newer ships also have a sea horse and sea star.

A Fish Extender (FE) is any thing that you care to hang on the fish to extend its ability to hold items. Literally anything will qualify, but most people use some type pocket organizer similar to a shoe caddy or mail organizer. They can be as simple as a canvas bag or as complex as your imagination cares to stretch. Here are some examples:

You can make your own (tutorials are available on disboard and on the web), convert something you already have, or purchase from one of many online sellers (there are sellers on Ebay and Etsy, among other sites). You are aiming for something approximately 8" wide. Anything wider will hang out of the little recessed area around your cabin door and have the potential to be bumped into by passersby.

So, whats it for?

Its become a kind of Secret Santa game played by the folks on the DIS Boards. The idea is that every participant on the cruise will go around the ship and leave a little nick-nack or whats-it gift in the pouches for the other cabins that are playing along.

How much does this cost?

The amount you spend on gifts is entirely up to you. There is no minimum or maximum amount.

What types of gifts are given? Where can I see examples?

Commonly given gifts include cruise or Disney themed mementos and trinkets; items for use while on the cruise; gifts that represent the gift-giver's home city/town, state, or (foreign) country; and small toys/activities for children. Gifts can be handmade or store bought. If your gift contains multiple parts or smaller pieces, consider packaging it in a small bag (ziplock, favor/party bag, small paper bag, etc.).

There are several threads here on disboards with examples of FE gifts:

http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=2473209
http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=1980639
http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=2907032

You can also find ideas by searching the web or Pinterest for "fish extender gifts."

Are there any gifts I should avoid?

Please make sure your gift doesn't contain something that is prohibited by DCL. This list includes balloons, candles, and homemade food items.

Some other questions to ask yourself: Will your finished gift be ruined by heat and humidity? Will your gift be difficult for the recipient to transport home on an airplane? Does your gift contain potential allergens that are not clearly labeled or identified?

How many gifts do I give, and to who?

Each cabin that is participating in the sign up and hanging a FE outside their door should prepare at least one gift for each cabin that is on the FE list. A family the occupies 2 cabins and is hanging 2 fish extenders historically has prepared 2 gifts for trading (or possibly one larger gift).

Some people give a general cabin gift for all people in the cabin. Others give individual gifts to each person in the cabin. Some do a combination of the two, giving a general cabin gift and then individual gifts for the children in the cabin. Some really enjoy gifting and prepare multiple gifts for the cabin, given on different days on the cruise.

When do we deliver the gifts?

Most FE groups allow participants to deliver their gifts at their own convenience. This allows it to be more of a surprise when a gift is found in the FE pocket. If the group decides to have a schedule for gift delivery, it will be be discussed on this thread and posted here.

Hi guys, I'm going to contact the OP and have them change the title of this thread and put a link in the first post to the Roll Call I just posted.

Haven't managed to get one of those fancy countdown symbols yet!

Thanks Aggiegrl for organizing us.

So excited to have book our first Disney Cruise. We will be taking our 3 year old and 1 year old girls. We welcome any advice on what to pack, to do excursions or not and would love to participate in the Fish Extender. Look forward to meeting and hearing from y'all.

Ok, so what exactly is a fish extender? Where do we get them? Are they fairly cheap? I don't know how much decorating I'll do on my door, but I love the idea of getting little messages (and giving them) to fellow DISers. That's about all I know of the whole FE thing, lol.

You're welcome! I'm happy to do whatever organizing needs done.

Hi there! I have a 3 year old son and twin girls (currently 17 month). Glad to have you on board!

Give me a second and I'll put some links in post #62 that answer these questions. I'm sure they'll be asked again. :thumbsup2

Okay guys, check out post 62 and see what I've written. Please let me know what needs corrected, clarified, or added. Everything is obviously open for discussion. :)

New to the thread and this is our first time curise ever! Little scared to be stuck at sea with the two kids for 7 days but looking forward to the adventure. Husband and I are brining along our 8 year old son and 4 year old daughter. At this point we are on Deck 1 ocean view but don't have a room assignment, it says GtY.
Has anyone ever stayed on deck 1 before? We really wanted a balcony but couldn't justify the price difference.

Welcome!

Disney makes being stuck at sea with kids very easy and fun. We are on Deck 1 in an oceanview as well. We just couldn't beat that price. I have not stayed Deck 1 on these ships, but did visit them delivering FE gifts. The deck was VERY quiet, so few cabins and not much foot traffic.

I've read a lot of reviews and they seem positive. You are low and (usually) center, which means less motion. You are right off the midship elevators, close to the atrium (characters!) and guest services. The pool decks are a bit away, so with younger kids you'll probably use the elevator, BUT being the bottom floor you'll get an empty elevator almost all of the time.

We booked this cruise week before last, but I'm just now getting around to checking in. This will be our fourth Disney cruise, but our first on the Wonder. We will be sailing for my daughter's fifth birthday (Oct. 4).

Hi everyone! We just booked yesterday and this will be our first Disney cruise. It will be my DH, me and our 4 year-old DS. Our cruise will be a late celebration of our 19th wedding anniversary and my 40th birthday. (I figure the excitement of the cruise will take the sting out of the birthday). We would like to participate in the fish extenders as well. It looks like there are quite a few other 4 year olds going which is awesome! I am looking forward to getting to know all of you better.

Welcome! My DS will be nearly 4 on the cruise. There were lots of kids in the 2-5 age range on our February cruise from Galveston, so I'm guessing this cruise will be similar given it's timing in the school year. My DS loved the Oceaneer's Club. It was full enough for him to always have someone to play with but never overcrowded.

How can we get on the FE list for this cruise. I'm new to Dis Boards and need help!

Hi guys. Just wanted to update..our original volunteer for the FE organizer hasn't been on this thread since October. I PMed her 12 days ago to see if she was still interested and haven't gotten a response.

I don't want to hijack or step on toes, but I do want to get us organized since a lot of people have asked. So...I'm going to post a link to a FE sign up. If The Maleficent One wants to organize it from here, I will certainly bow out.

PLEASE USE THIS FORM TO SIGN UP FOR THE FISH EXTENDER. FOR FISH EXTENDER DETAILS, PLEASE SEE POST #62 ON PAGE 5 OF THIS THREAD.

Hey there and welcome bellato4!

It looks like you got the form filled out...so I guess it works. I've never used google docs forms before, so I was crossing my fingers. ;)

 Thanks Aggiegrl for setting up the fish extenders!

nte99, we got our room assignments via a Disney confirmation email a week after I booked through Dreams Unlimited. Also received a mailed packet with room number that came about a week after the email confirmation.

We called Disney directly when we found out about the new specials (we booked with them online originally, which was under "GTY" ).
They applied price of new specials, assigned a room #, and let us choose room over phone :)
Nice customer service!!
