9/27/14, Returning to the Southern Caribbean

How about a couple Disney Trivia questions today?

No googling on line for answers. :laughing:Everyone is on the honor system for this.

Post your answers right or wrong and either late tonight or in the morning I will post the answers so you can see if you got it right.
Take a guess if you dont know, you might surprize yourself. You can ask your family.

Have fun!!

These are right from Trivia on the ship from my last 2 cruises.

1. What is Donald Ducks middle name?
2. What is Donald Ducks sisters full name?

Bonus question: What is Donald's nickname for his sister?

Kathy

1. Fauntleroy
2. Della Duck Bonus: Donald called her Dumbella, lol. :p

Donald is adorable, he is one of my faves :lovestruc

Good morning,

You both got his middle name right.

Della is her first name and Thelma is her middle name which was mentioned only once in an old cartoon.
Good job there ladies !!

Dumbella is the correct nickname. Sounds like a typical name a brother would call his sister :rotfl:

Ok who else has a question of the day or a trivia question??

We can all be experts by cruise time and be our own team and win all the Disney trivias!! ;)

I would like Free Style Dining or Anytime Dining in the 3 main restaurants.

Other lines have this. It simply means the restaurants are open at specific times, usually an hour apart for 3 or 4 hours each evening and you can go and eat when ever you want and in any restaurant you want.
That way you can eat when you're hungry instead of when you're told to go eat and you can sit by yourself or with others.
I would like a 24 hour buffet too.

HUGE disagreement here! You are essentially asking a premier cruise line to change their business model ... one which has placed them in the forefront of the entire cruise industry. It would be like asking Seabourne to change from a 6-star to a 4-star cruise line. DCL is the ONLY cruise line to master rotational dining. It is one of many reasons people LOVE DCL. To abandon the idea would be like asking DCL to serve bland food, offer mediocre customer service, or take away the characters.

(Other lines have this) - Yes, and many people do not sail those lines because of it. Many try Freestyle, and hate it. Since there is no organization, there are often lines of people waiting for a table, which means delays in seating, and waiting for your meal. Many of these cruise lines have reduced the space in MDR's, in favor of more space at surcharge restaurants. This also means, your dining party must decide if everyone wants to spend $15 (surcharge) for Mexican fare ... or if everyone wants to spend $20 (surcharge) for a hamburger at Johnny Rockets. As it is now (at home) my family must agree on what they want to eat, before knowing which restaurant they want to visit. If my wife wants seafood, and I want chicken ... we cannot (realistically) go to a Mexican restaurant, nor can we go to a steakhouse. How does THAT work when you go to a specialty restaurant? All of that aside, where's the thrill of going out every night ... trying to re-explain yourself to a new server every night. As it is now, it's very nice to know your beverage is waiting for you at your table (when you arrive). It's nice to knowing your server was able to pre-order (1 day in advance) your special salad (not on the menu). It's a dream to get a special request dessert or appetizer ... again ... which is either not on the menu that night, or not on the menu at all. Try getting any of that done with Freestyle. Freestyle is an oxymoron.

(restaurants are open at specific times, usually an hour apart for 3 or 4 hours each evening and you can go and eat when ever you want and in any restaurant you want) - DCL restaurants are indeed open at specific times. To suggest wait staff operate for 9 hours, in addition to the time necessary to prepare the restaurants and shut down the restaurants would be a waste of time. In it's current form, that would require the hiring of MORE wait staff, or a reduction in staff to spread out the dining times. That, on its own, is deplorable (have you looked into the ratio of cast members to guests?). Currently, guests are frantic when they book an excursion which returns to the ship at 5:45 ... because they have 6:15 dining time. Using your example (4 hour seating), Dinner would start at 1PM, and end at 10PM. Using the 3 hour seating, Dinner would start at 3PM, and end at 10PM. These times would not only create issues with excursions, and entertainment (pre/post dinner) but it would also create issues with LUNCH! Based upon either of these times ... you'd wake up ... go to breakfast ... have to skip lunch, only to go to dinner.

In essence, Freestyle dining is nothing more than what is offered at local restaurants at home. Fortunately, for those restaurants, they can stagger the number of servers throughout the shifts. With cruise lines ... you cannot expect a cruise line server to work for 2 hours one day ... then 12 hours straight (in the restaurant, alone).

(you can eat when you're hungry) - You can do that now on most any cruise line. If you do not want the MDR, choose the buffet, or an alternate restaurant (minimum of 3 restaurant choices). If I made a reservation for 6:45 at a local steakhouse at home ... I cannot show up at 7:30, and expect to be seated. Expecting to walk into any restaurant on a whim is no different. Many people seem to THINK Freestyle is a good option ... they keep repeating ... "everything on YOUR schedule." To this day, I have never heard of any cruise line starting bingo early, because you want to play bingo earlier. I have never heard of any cruise line delaying the start of a show or movie, because someone wants to show up 30 minutes late. This does not happen at home (unless you have Netflix), and it does not happen at sea.

(24 hour buffet) If you can eat whenever and wherever you want, why would you need a buffet ... much less ... a 24 hour buffet? That aside, everything has a cost. Who do you think pays for the additional wait staff? Who pays for the warmed over and wasted food? Would you want cast members to be taken away from other areas, solely to tend to the buffet? As it is now, much of the late night entertainment (cabarets, etc) do not stay open til 2AM ... yet, you expect buffets to remain open 24/7? Does this mean you want additional buffets installed, or would you want service cut down at the existing buffets? I mean, there is a turnover period with all food. Would you want to wait in a line for breakfast at 7AM, while someone waits in the same line for prime rib? Not only do you have more lines, and less offerings, you have older food, and less variety.

By the way, have you SEEN the 24 hour buffets in Atlantic City or Las Vegas? :scared:

Currently, DCL is in the process of doing away with buffets on the Magic and Wonder, because they are not effective. To do a 180 on buffets would take away from other public space / rooms ... would water down service and offerings, would incur an influx of $ for renovations.

=======

As it is now, people sail on cruises because they want to get away from the normal "every day" at home. People want good food ... excellent service ... excellent entertainment ... and everything comes at a cost. I cruise DCL (exclusively since 2006) because I like their business model. To ask them to change their business model ... to lower their standards would be a huge mistake. Try asking WDW or DL to lower their standards ... it's not going to happen!

#######

(coffee) Like many others, I am fine with the coffee served onboard. Like many others, I do not feel Starbucks is coffee ... that stuff is putrid! Just as there are those who like Coke vs. Pepsi ... there as those who like RC, and those who have no preference. Personally, I do not like Coke ... so I make sacrifices while on DCL.

Don't worry we won't tell the kids you are going on a Disney cruise without them. That is if you promise not to tell our kids.

Steven,

I take it you like the rotational dining and your fine with the coffee that DCL serves.

Just clarifying, because I too like the rotational dining and I usually buy a new DCL coffee mug at the beginning of each cruise so I have it to use all cruise long.

We have gotten to know some wonderful people because of the assigned seating for the evening meals. On our 2011 Alaska cruise the 3 families at our table got along so well that we met for dinner at a local restaurant in Vancouver the night we disembarked.

Donald is my favorite character.
Not a question of the day, just curious,

Hortense, I wont forget it. When we lived in PR we had a hurricane Hortense hit and for some odd reason I am good remembering the names of the storms that have hit us.

My favorite theme park bag is the one they used to sell when one exits Mickey's Philarmagic, with Donalds butt sticking out it reads "crabby, yet lovable". I had it for years and when mine broke, that's when they discontinued it :sad2: I keep checking ebay, but no luck. Hopefully someone will list one one day.

I have a t-shirt iwth the same picture but no words i got years ago at the Philharmagic. Its a little tight now but I keep stretching it out each time I wear it.;)

I don't recall saying I preferred Starbucks, I don't like their coffee either. When it comes to what DCL and WDW serves (NesCafe)...when I add cream to my coffee, I don't want it to turn gray.

Like many others, all I'm asking for is good brewed coffee. You used to be able to get it by ordering it from Room Service. Last time we ordered it, we got NesCafe.

I'm a fan of rotational dining and would not like to see that changed either.

I just wanted to say hi again, (and post more!) This cruise will be our 3rd. The first was the Magic Oct 20-27, 2007. More recently we did the Fantasy this past July. What a big ship that was! We are still silver. My parents will be platinum this fall.

We have been on the Dream but not the Fantasy. Other than a longer cruise, what is it you liked about the Fantasy over the Dream?

Welcome back. Come in and stay awhile.

We have been on the Dream but not the Fantasy. Other than a longer cruise, what is it you liked about the Fantasy over the Dream?

Bill

Well in the adult areas Forward on the ship on the Dream there is the bar and a few tables and chairs, then as you go more forward there was a few chairs and the view of the ocean. One of those white balls had a bench seat around it. You know where I am speaking about?

Ok on the Fantasy they have Satellite Falls which is that white globe. No bench seat there but there is a ring around it full of water where you can sit quietly and now and then water falls from above so your sitting behind a waterfall. Its really a unique feature. Plus that area has a large covered area full of nice loungers with an extra clear wind break for comfort. Thats one huge thing I like much better.

Also on deck 12 I believe on the Dream its just a few loung chairs towards the forward part of the ship but where families can go. Its all open there. On the Fantasy there is a small wading pool for kids that most never see, plus a covered stage area with live entertainers a couple times a night.

On the Dream the Clubs are kind of dark looking as you walk through the hallways. On the Fantasy its bright and colorful On the center area is La Piaza which is a bar that looks like a carousel. Its really pretty. The area where they have late night snacks in the adult area on the Dream has a small shelve to set your food. On the Fantasy they have several small tables and chairs that remind me of the old soda fountain places.

The hallway on the Dream is pretty, all black tiles that are shiny, on the Fantasy its like your wandering through a cave and the bathrooms have awesome tile pictures on the walls.

Now the sports bar on the Dream beats the Fantasy hands down for design and size.

In the Royal Court on the Dream they have great pictures of all the princesses and princes which is amazing. But on the Fantasy all those photos are done in tile. That is awesome!!!

Now AFT on the dream before going up to the sports deck is a large bar called Waves and a few chairs. Its very nice but its rare if you see more than one person there. Kind of a waste of space for me since there are plenty of bars closer to the pool and adult areas and waiters.
Now on the Fantasy this is a huge kids water play area featuring Donald Duck.
Its perfect for kids that are too big for Flounders reef but not comfortable enough to be in a pool, or maybe they cant swim. Well this place is amazing with water falling from boats that are suspended up high, buckets tipping full of water, water spurting from the deck and its large so kids can run and have fun without bumping into people. There is also a large bench there for parents to sit on if they want to. Donalds foot prints guide you to it and through it.

The bar Waves is off to the side where the restroom use to be. No chairs, must walk up and get your drink. It is super tiny and faces the ocean. It took me 3 days to find it. Mostly waiters come to fill their orders there and take to guests.
ok on the Dream AFT on deck 4 is a huge outside smoking area. Now if your a jogger or runner you dont want ot go by there smelling smoke all the time and the smell is so strong it drifts up to the balconies above. On the Fantasy they removed that area. I am a non smoker so for me that is nice.

Anyway that is some of the differences. I have photos that would show better than I can explain. If photo bucket ever starts workign good again (they're working on the site) I will post them for you to see.

Dont get me wrong, I love the Dream too. Its an amazing ship but the Fantasy is better for my tastes.
