9/27/14, Returning to the Southern Caribbean

I hope every one is having a good weekend so far.

Hot and humid still in Florida.

The coast line where the ships are all seem to have thunder clouds this morning. I am hoping they clear off for those leaving on a cruise.

Have a great day everyone,

Kathy

I'm not complaining ... but figured I would throw this out there ... so others will realize, they are likely ahead of "the game" ...

- We currently do not have air conditioning. A power surge took out our A/C coil ($3,600). If we replace the coil, we need to replace the A/C condenser (another $3,500). If we replace the condenser, we really need to consider replacing the heater (entire unit is 25 years old), as the A/C would have to be melded into the heater. The estimate for new gas fired HVAC ... $14,000 - $21,000 (down to about $19K after rebates and energy credits). OHHHH-MY-GOOOOOSH!

- Some of you know our home was impacted by Hurricane Sandy (October 29, 2012). The house sustained $45,000+ of damage ... and the insurance company came to visit us after this last Thanksgiving. A "catastrophe" adjuster was dispatched ... who was from North Carolina (we are in Philadelphia, PA). He initially wrote $11,000 worth of damages. It would take another 3-4 months before anyone at our insurance company would respond back to us, before we they sent someone else for a 2nd opinion ... and then ... realize their first adjuster had missed $34,000 of repairs (go figure)!

- In early April, we received a check from the insurance company ... made out incorrectly (long story). It has taken 2.5 months to get past our adjuster to his Supervisor, who started screaming at me while on his cell phone with a very bad connection. I informed him of our bad connection, and asked him to have someone call me when they have a good connection. Surprisingly, a MANAGER called me within 20 minutes. After 30 minutes on the phone, it seems like a majority of the insurance check situation is in the process of being resolved ... but I will not hold my breath, until I get written confirmation.

- We had our brick chimney fixed this past week (broken terracotta, from Hurricane Sandy) ... $1,200 for repairs.

- The roof is getting replaced within the next 2 weeks (Hurricane Sandy) ... $10,750, plus a new thermostatically controlled attic fan (damaged - Sandy) - $375, plus about $500 to replace 8 sheets of plywood (mold - Sandy).

- Once the roof is done, hopefully we can concentrate on the other $30,000 of repairs. We're not living in the woods ... it's just that a LOT of stuff was damaged to some degree or another (including a bathroom window - $1,700, sliding glass door - $7,600, siding, gutters, down spouts, some vinyl siding, garage doors ... need I go on?). So, if it's broken ... it has to be fixed.

- We just ordered seven windows (front of the house) ... Pella says it will take 8 weeks to order & install - $7,500 (not damaged from Sandy - surprise).

During the week ... I head to Costco, to sit in the food court (free A/C, and I get to drink for the entire day for just 59 cents! They have a hand-dipped vanilla ice cream bar - $1.59 ... it's not really a Mickey bar ... but if you close your eyes and dream ... it's darn close!

I love watching the ships pull out.

I wish it was mid September, 2014!

FWIW, can you FIND WALDO (me) departing Galveston on the Magic? DW and I are on Deck 10, waiving to friends on land (about 600 feet away). The one picture shows an open slider on deck 9 ... that is the Couples Villa Spa. We booked a treatment there ... WOW!

Sounds like you need some pixiedust:pixiedust:pixiedust: to help these people to get on the ball with your check and repairs!!

You can bet if they were the ones with no AC and all of that damage to their home they would work a lot faster!!

Sure hope they get you fixed up soon:thumbsup2

I hope you have a couple portable fans you can run or ceiling fans to at least circulate the air. I know its not cool but it does help a little.

When hurricane Jeanne and 2 others went right over the top of our house a few years ago we didn't even loose a shingle, but neighbors weren't so lucky.
Our only problem was no power for a couple weeks, so no AC and everything had to be stored in ice chests and cook on the BBQ. After that we bought a generator but never needed it.

pixiedust:pixiedust:pixiedust: for your repairs!!

Been there, done that. I feel your pain.

Right after we moved into our first home here, Hurricane Fran came roaring through. Lost our entire storage shed, fence, most of the shingles off the roof, and the a/c died. We had just come back from an overseas duty station, knew nobody, didn't know the area, had sunk almost everything into buying our very first home.... :sad2:

Hurricane Isabelle hit us the year after buying this house....we luckily made it through in a little better shape, lost some shutters and some shingles but we had no power for two weeks and then the pumps at the water company failed and we had no water for three days.

Needless to say, I will not buy another house in this area! :lmao:

I hope you all had a great weekend. Mine was too hot to go out and do much, so I did a good cleaning inside.

Now I am waiting to go pick up hubby at the airport. His plane had a delay so he wont be getting in until after midnight :rolleyes2

I will be tired tomorrow!! I can't sleep in due to commitments, hope to catch a quick nap in the afternoon. :cloud9:

Pixie Dust is ALWAYS good, and certainly appreciated! :woohoo:

Oddly enough, party of Hurricane Sandy's wrath included a huge power surge, which knocked out garage door openers, front porch light timer, clothes dryer and Master BR ceiling fan. The dryers now takes 3x the amounf of time to dry, because the Senseon feature (Whirlpool) is not working ... and we have to "wait" for procedure. The MBR ceiling fan was an expensive 6-blade fan with high-pitch blades (moves much more air ... we have a large MBR, plus, it has a cathedral ceiling). We do use a portable fan, as does out son (in his bedroom). We have a house guest ... it's hot in that bedroom, as well as the family room.

If things do not get straightened out soon, I am going to ask for housing allowance (covered by insurance, but would require approval) ... since it;s just too darn humid. The temperature is okay (to me) ... but those who have lived in the northeast US know how dang HUMID it can be!

Sorry to see you go Stephanie,

I hope you will still get to cruise soon.

Kathy

Perhaps, Steven :scratchin

We just looked at the cruise, and realized that what we REALLY like is the sea days and relaxing. Both of us have high-stress jobs and cruise for relaxation. Given that, we noticed the EBPC, remembered how relaxed we were at the end of the EBPC we took in 2008, loved Cartegena (we were there on the inaugural cruise) and would love to spend more time there. Price was just about the same...decision made.

Have a great cruise!:beach:

I'm giving up my bday cruise for the October 11th Southern with a 3 day repo cruise.
I couldn't pass that up pirate:

Enjoy your cruise everyone!

We sailed EB DCL Panama in 2008 ... loved it ... including Cartegena.
We've sailed EB DCL TransAtlantic twice so far ... loved it as well!
In both instances, we too, very much appreciate the sea days. :lovestruc

We must have been on the same cruise,...'member scraping the side of the lock? :scared1:

I DID NOT DO IT! I WAS CLEARED OF ALL CHARGES! :joker:

I was "glued" to Deck 10 forward, with my camera and camcorder. My DW, DS and his girlfriend abandoned me ... leaving me to fend for my "perfect photography spot" ... but remember hearing about it. Oh well, that's why DCL brings extra paint! :artist:

FWIW, I still have a large magnet on the fridge from Eeyorelvr10 !

Wow ! This thread has grown sooo much ! I am experiencing the I need a vaca blues ~ here in Rottenchester NY this rain has become too much for me :(

We do have WDW to look forward to in the fall~ can I wish for this lousy so far summer to be over ?

Enjoy the 4th and I will have to check in here more often ! :thumbsup2
