This isn't a flame but I'm wondering why President Bush placed a wreath at the WTC site today, Sept. 10th. Maybe in 20 years or 40 or whatever that day's commemorations can be delegated to a weekend event but I think it's too soon for that.

While this is a Sunday and perhaps a quieter day in NYC, NYC is the city that never sleeps. And, I suppose as the WTC site is an active work place, it would have disrupted the schedules but still. :(

Perhaps someone on this board can give me a concrete reason why 9/11 was observed on 9/10.

I thought the same thing..but my mom said that she heard tomorrow they are going to the pennsylvania crash site and pentagon---but thats just what she heard..not sure if it is true or not

He's going to Pennsylvania and the Pentagon tomorrow. Can't be everywhere at once.

Personally, I don't care WHEN it's commemorated. I'm just hoping that we don't FORGET what happened. If it requires a ceremony on the 10th to keep people aware, then I'm all for it.

...and, isn't he giving speech tomorrow night?

I agree. That it is remembered is far more important than when it is remembered.

Maybe partially because tomorrow is a normal work day? This way 9-5'ers can participate in at least a portion of the ceremonies.

First, I don't care when it's remembered...as long as we never forget. Secondly, I think he did it on Sunday, because it's quieter in NYC...if that's even possible. :confused3 Is it?

Don't the families always have a memorial on 9/11? They read off all the names and bring flowers to the site. Maybe he didn't want to take away from that.

My thought is that it's because tomorrow is going to be so crowded with families and onlookers and security would be a nightmare with the Secret Service and with the President traveling to the other sites.

More persons in front of their TVs on a Sunday afternoon...

just simple marketing.

He sure is. I just ran a search (I have windows media, so I can run TV searches thru that) trying to find the 9/11 programs. The ABC one is on tonight from 8 to 11 I believe (I Just looked, roflmao - they say the memory is the first thing to go), but tomorrow night it concludes. It'll start at 8, it will stop at 9 while Bush addresses the nation, then the program will continue afterward.

I wondered that too. Especially since with Air Force One, he could fly to all the affected places (NY, Pentagon, Pennsylvania) in a very short time. I hate to believe it, but unfortunately, I think Anewman maybe right about the TV marketing angle.

Really, cause while I was in front of my TV on Sunday afternoon I didn't see anything about Bush and the wreath at the 9/11 site. ABC was running the IRL race most of the afternoon.

Most people would say that in order to get the biggest audience he would do when the major networks were actually at work and reporting, say 8 or 9AM on Monday morning while Today, GMA and the CBS Morning show were on.

I think it was more of what others have had, the least disruptive way to honor those who died. While he has AF One to fly around in imagine the disruption to airlines if he decided to fly into NYC on Monday morning. Then imagine the motorcade driving through the streets of NYC at rush hour. It makes sense when you look at it that way.

Bush lets silence fill Ground Zero

By Caroline Daniel in New York

President George W. Bush has spoken 22,000 words in the past week in a series of speeches on the “war on terror” but on Sunday he let a carefully posed silence remind Americans of September 11 2001 as he laid a wreath at Ground Zero.

Faced with criticism from Democrats that he was politicising the day, the White House said Mr Bush would make no prepared remarks on Monday, as he marks the fifth anniversary of the attacks with a meeting of emergency personnel in New York and holds further moments of silence at the Pentagon and Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

I highly doubt more people are home watching the news on a Sunday afternoon than will be watching the coverage of tomorrows events.

I think a separate event could be seen as more meaningful than making it part of some kind of whirlwind tour. I think many 9/11 commemorations took place today. We are all thinking about it today. Many of us were in our places of worship today. I think it was very appropriate.

Well possibly if you qualify it as "watching the news", but there is obviously more americans in front of their tvs on Sundays am/afternoon Vs Mondays. And taping today will allow the clips to be shown all day Monday with everybodies coverage on both coasts.

I do know that the clip was shown on a local channel during halftime of the game I was watching and it was broadcast live on 3 other channels(interupted programming, not just news).

This is not a partisan issue(to the person that rolled their eyes at me), it is just math. I am not saying it is a bad or good thing but IMO it just makes sense.

From the local paper:

Bush's 9/11 schedule

President George W. Bush and his wife, Laura Bush, placed wreaths Sunday at the site of the World Trade Center, beginning two days of presidential activities marking the fifth anniversary of the 9/11 attacks.

Afterward, the Bushes attended a service at nearby St. Paul's Chapel, greeted firefighters at a firehouse overlooking Ground Zero and toured a museum that's dedicated to 9/11 families. "I vowed that I'm never going to forget the lessons of that day," Bush said.

Today, Bush plans to visit a firehouse in New York; Shanksville, Pa., where a hijacked plane slammed into the ground, and the Pentagon. He'll return to the White House for a televised speech at 9 tonight
