I'm considering booking onsite for a trip in the next few weeks but the 8-day cancellation policy is starting to push me toward some off-site hotels that allow cancellation until 1 day before check-in. I have a relative (not going on the trip) whose health has declined and I may end up needing to reschedule if something happens. Has anyone run into something similar and actually lost the deposit if you called Disney to reschedule once the deadline has passed?

Obviously it's a YMMV scenario, but I think generally, if the dates you move to are more expensive you're fine...I know with packages anything within 30 days that makes the trip MORE expensive, they typically waive the change fees.

I agree its a YMMV situation, but I had a trip this past February where m partner became very sick 36 hours before the trip and could not travel. First, I called the general help line asking if I could reschedule the trip ad pay whatever difference in cost. They said it was too late and could not help me. Then, I called signature services (we were staying at club level and thought they might have more flexibility to help). Signature services said it was no problem helping me reschedule (and we are now taking that trip in September). So, I don't know about flat out cancelling, but they did help me reschedule after the stated deadline

Can you buy insurance for WDW room reservation, even from an outside company? I'm not sure if anyone offers it.... maybe someone would know.

Not sure if there is much you can do about the deposit unfortunately
