8.9 earthquake and tsunami in Japan!

At 3 am, I got an email message from a friend in tokyo saying he was fine after the earthquake. was 1/2 asleep and wrote back glad he was safe but I didn't realize the true extent of damage then. Just got another email from him saying he had to walk the 15 miles home bc no transportation but he is still safe.

If the tsunami waves on the west coast are only a couple of feet that isn't likely to cause disruptions or damage.

That is one beast of an earthquake though. I am used to them being a CA native but I would of freaked out at that big of a quake.

I am hoping i heard it wrong but they said a whole entire train is missing in Japan.

They interviewed a woman earlier on CNN and she believes her husband was on that missing train. :sad1:

DH & I were watching our late local 10pm News last night when they interrupted to say that a 7.5 earthquake had hit Japan. DH & I remember last Easter our 7.2 earthquake and thought, well that 7.5 in Japan is probably not all that bad. The News reporters kept changing the magnitude and soon they said it was an 8.9. OMG! I just could not imagine that … they also said the tremors and the after shocks were and have been so intense. :sad2:
We stayed up until midnight watching the News. Then woke up very early to East coast family calling us about the Tsunami …. scary.

Any pictures/updates on Hawaii/West Coast that anyone knows of?

I've been checking LA news sources and haven't seen any reports of damage, etc. nbclosangeles.com has live video from the coast, but apparently I don't have the latest version of something to watch it. :headache:

Having been through a 7.2 and a 8.8 earthquake in the past 13 months, I can tell you that the difference between the two is like the difference between a gusty day and hurricane-force winds. I hope never to experience anything remotely close to a megathrust earthquake again. I've been through lots of scary things in my life, but nothing comes even close to comparing with it.

Has there been any news lately from Crescent City, CA? Earlier on the Weather Channel they were showing video of several boats that had broken free of there moorings.

I just heard the waves there were 8 ft. Homes and boats destroyed. So sad for everyone involved.

Reports of the Cooling efforts having failed at one of the power plants and possibly leaks. Other reports say no leaks/problems.

My heart goes out to the people of Japan. I was watching some videos of the damage on Michelle Malkin's sight and was shocked at the ocean waves that just kept coming and destruction caused.

Catastrophe in Japan; 8.9 quake, tsunami; West Coast, Hawaii prepare for floods

They just said 1000 feared dead in Japan! And more than 80 thousand missing. :sad1:

I saw a video of cars that fell off of a bridge and were just washed away...and I cried. Can you imagine, you are driving along with your kids in the backseat and all of a sudden you are thrown in the water and gone. In the blink of an eye.

This is what struck me with horror when watching the videos of the tsunami washing through the towns........there weren't just cars and houses we were watching washing away...it was people, lives and entire communities of people! We were watching it happen before our eyes and there was nothing anyone could do to help them.

You heard right. An entire train and it sounded like a small cruise ship with 100 people on it as well. How awful......

My younger son taught in Sendai Japan when he graduated from College. Glad to say he is safely here with us in Long Island. His next stop was Korea, he is back from there, too.:thumbsup2

He was able to reach a really good friend in an evacuation shelter in Sendai, good to hear that! We are praying for the people in Japan, and all those in danger from tsunamis. :littleangel:

Yes, just hearing on Fox 80,000 missing. Reporters saying, "there are people in those cars you are watching wash away." I can't imagine the horror...
