DH would wat to consider Catholic school if there is one nearby. Most likely the kids will go to public school. DS8 has an IEP, so our biggest concern is how (or if) they mainstream the special ed kids.

I'm not sure how E catholic schools are but there is a Catholic HS that i hear has an awesome program for kids who need extra help. (lower class ratios).

As for IEP's UGG... well lets just say the schools try to get away with the bare minimum for your child....In other words, even if they have straight d's...that's passing...

We have fought with two school districts and were unable to get an IEP for DD (for her ADD.) SO My DH and I have been the only help she's gotten. That and the $5,000 i paid to HUntingdon learning center to help dd when the schools refused to.

In some of the districts, you'll find great ES's but then MS's that are just horrible or vice-versa.

Also catholic education around here runs anywhere from 5-10K per yr.:scared1:

PS i wouldn't recommend VA due to their personal property taxes...(ie for instance you pay taxes on your car every year.... For my Honda Civic it'd be like $500-700
In MD they will charge you a tax for bringing your car and registering it here. (if it's done within first 60 days then you only pay $200, if not it's based on value of the car ..ie more $$$) That's in addition to the registration fees you pay.

One thing i forgot to mention is that i think that there may be some type of special home rental lists for people in the military who move here.

I had a co-worker who only rented her other home to military members and charged lower rates.

You might try to ask the housing office on base if they know of any such landlords.

and did you have a monthly housing fee in mind... You'll probably be spending somewhere between 1,800 to $2,500 a month depending on what you want.

I hate it when I lose the quotes!

Yes, we are keeping and renting our AK house. We plan to retire here (first retirement in 6 years), so it will give us a place to live for a few years while we look for our 'forever house'. I love my house here. Of our 7 houses (in 12 years) this is by far our favorite! We can't afford to buy in DC & we want to own something, somewhere.

How sad is it that we both have professional, executive type jobs with decent pay, no debt, and can't afford a freekin' house within a 2 hour commute to DC??????

Wow, I really hope you can find something livable!!!:thumbsup2 I would hate to move to Californis too. Cost of living is just so high in certain places. I know that is why we are heading south for our retirement. I loved Alaska, (only was in Anchorage for a week). I thought the cost of housing was really high there too??:confused3

What I had was adhesive capsulitis, in laymans terms frozen shoulder. Either you work with pt or have operation along with pt. I figured if I have to go thru painful exercises either way, why have an operation? I was lucky that they went 1 at a time. At the worst I couldn't lift my arm at all. Hope yours is an easy fix.:

OMG, I had a frozen shoulder too!!! :sad2: I went to PT for two years and nothing. I went for operation but Doctor could not get my heart rate down. I was worried over DH who just had 5 by-pass. The doctor cancelled the operation. When I heard the operation was cancelled ,I threw my arm so hard that I broke the scar tissue.:headache: A few shots of cortisone and I was fine. The funny part is the hospital billed my insurance as if I had the operation for $26,ooo and the insurance paid it!!! I healed myself.

Man, I must be getting old(er), it's hard to believe that our DD Kristen would have been turning 30 years old today, where have the years gone???

:grouphug:  :flower3:

I did and thought.............finally a good show with a good outcome. Did anyone watch lost? I get more confused everytime I watch it.
Andy & family

I LOVE Lost although I am more confused than ever. I guess that is why it is called "Lost":rotfl2:

We finally made it, it is Opening Night for Brigadoon.............

We will be so happy when this weekend is over with, MAYBE, just MAYBE, we'll get our ST back into her NORMAL mode.............:lmao: The past few days she has been............... :scared: : :scared:
:rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2:

Please tell her to break a leg. :thumbsup2 You must be a proud father.:goodvibes

HAPPY BIRTHDAY'S FOR
Friday 4/20......

Megan / DD cinderella mom3

I am not a very good priate.:sad2: I can't even steal(borrow very good).:rotfl2:

Yes, I was so relieved. Sorry if I spoiled it for anyone but since it was all over the net and news:confused3

No problem, it was just a friendly reminder.
They don't talk about show results on our local news until after it has aired.

I'm not sure how E catholic schools are but there is a Catholic HS that i hear has an awesome program for kids who need extra help. (lower class ratios).

What's the commute to downtown from Fredneck?

No problem on the car tax. DH can keep his Alaska residency, so our cars will be registered in AK. And no state income tax on DH pay :woohoo:

DS8 has problems with reading. Smart kid, his brain is just wired differently. He gets 100% on all of his spelling tests, but he has trouble reading the test back to me! He is doing very well in school, just needs extra help with reading. I pushed since 2nd semester of K to have him tested. They finally did it 2nd semster of 1st grade. At least IEPs are for 3 years, so his is good for another year and a half, so they will have to provide the help he needs.

Kids will be 2nd and 3rd grade, so we only really have to be concerned with elem. schools. We'll be gone by middle school. Long gone...

One thing i forgot to mention is that i think that there may be some type of special home rental lists for people in the military who move here.

There is a military by owner sight that I am looking at. What I really need to do is narrow our search down to a few areas, it is just so overwhelming!

Even though I work, our plan is always to only spend DH's housing allowance on a house, so we are looking at the top of your range.

How sad is it that I have plotted out all of the ice rinks in the area?
Besides work and school, that is where we spend the most time! back-and- forth-back-and-forth

I know I'm not alone, but for a little while yesterday it was all about ME!
We bought our first house when I was 25. This is the first time that I feel like we are going backwards. CT and AK ain't cheap and we didn't have to live ina shed in either place.

I found a nice area with some great rentals, then realized that it would take 1.5 hours for DH to get to work & I don't know about my commute yet. We have kids, that is just not the life I want to have.

It all just sucks.

Three to 4 years ago when I was considering a job at the Pentagon, DW and I looked around the DC area. We looked at MD and also Tyson's Corner where there was a 2br condo having an open house...$400K :scared1: It was listed in MLS on Friday, the agent put an ad for the open house in the Saturday, the open house was on Sunday and while we were talking to him his phone rang TWICE with agents calling to put in bids for their clients--sight unseen! I talked to him later and he said he had 9 offers by Monday morning!:scared1: :sad2: Anyway we asked the guy where could we get a 4 bedroom, 2.5-3 bath, single family house for around $275k max and still be within a one hour commute to the Pentagon? His response? WEST VIRGINIA!

You can't get that for $275,000 with an hour commute to Anchorage either. This isn't like I'm not used to high housing prices!!!! The only reason we got our AK house was that I drove by it about 15 minutes after the sign went up. We had a bid to the agent 2 hours later before it hit the MLS system. I went back the next day to take pictures so DH could see the house I had just bid on (he was still in CT, I flew up for 3 days to househunt) & it showed 5 times in 20 minutes on a Thursday morning less than 12 hours after hitting MLS!

I also got a job and finished my thesis during those 72 hours. See what I can do when I leave DH and the kids at home! :)

emphasis added

My Master's thesis is my third kid. Nine months to write and it made me fat!

Sorry, couldn't resist the wording... knew what you meant.

Fat? Ok Miss Triathalon (?sp) :rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2:

Thank You Susan, Andrew and Cheryl!!! :goodvibes

Have a good one, I had to be early as after work on Friday I am out all night and will not be able to pop in until at least Saturday.

Didnt wish to miss your day.

Thank you for your excellent posts and warm welcomes to all, and have a special day.

Is that by helicopter or small plane?

There's no way unless you commute at 2:30 am that you could get from WV to the Pentagon

ANd BTW even WV is going over $300K right now....

You'd want Greencastle, PA for the $275 Range (might as well move to Pittsburgh with that)

What's the commute to downtown from Fredneck?

By car it's iffy maybe 1-1.5 hr if traffic is moving. (usually it's not)
Most people will take MARC train into downtown and then take Metro.
Marc passes run around $150 per month. Metro cost $ too.

There is a military by owner sight that I am looking at. What I really need to do is narrow our search down to a few areas, it is just so overwhelming!

if you do find a couple areas. Just ask and i'll let you know if i'd move there.
Potomac is nice. Fairfax is ok. Leesburg is ok. Bethesda is urban but ok.
Parts of Rockville (aka Rock "vile") are ok too. (They have ice skating rink there i believe) From Rockville your DH could take Metro to/from work because there's a few stations. The northern end of Silver Spring (like Sykesville) is very pretty/rural too.

Even though I work, our plan is always to only spend DH's housing allowance on a house, so we are looking at the top of your range.

If you can do $2,500 you should be able to find a NICE house.

How sad is it that I have plotted out all of the ice rinks in the area?
Besides work and school, that is where we spend the most time! back-and- forth-back-and-forth

oh and Fredneck has an ice rink too....
