2A search shows Cat 7 & 11 - what's up with that? Aren't kids allowed in Cat 7???

We went to Belize many many moons ago with several other couples. We were there for 10 days.
One of the ladies in the group REFUSED to wear any kind of sunscreen whatsoever. We tried and tried to tell her that the sun is so very different down there (compared to her home in West Virginia!) but she wouldn't listen. She said "I never burn" Okaaaay.......

She spent days 2, 3, and 4 in bed. And in agony.

I really DID hate to say I told you so......:rolleyes1

LIFEBOATS. Probably at their limit for that section...and can only accomodate 2 adults. Or one adult one child, which is still charged at the adult rate.

Hi again - I have a few minutes free before the big plant move starts. I just realized that my ealier post was in the midst of the Magic going through the canal! Wish I had time to watch that today :sad2: Oh well, I'll go back and "watch" it through all your eyes when I ketchup tomorrow!

Just a repeat of my question in case it got lost among much more exciting posts!

Actual cruise related question: Does anyone know what time the "tall ship" excursion in Cabo will be? We are still deciding between that and just doing the beach with the DIS group - DS9 wants to know if we can do both? If the ship is in the afternoon, then it might be possible ...

Thanks,

Pamela

The only problem with high factor SPF creams is they are not good for your skin the chemicals in them are very bad and cause ageing fast.

There is only one ingredient that people worry about: oxybenzone. In sunlight, oxybenzone can trigger photoallergenic reactions and form reactive chemicals that harm cells. Limited evidence suggests this chemical may affect the hormone system. Just look to see that your sunscreen doesn't contain this if you are worried about it.

In general, excessive exposure to sun causes premature aging, not sunscreen. The very best sunscreens are physical blocks rather than chemical . . . like titanium dioxide and zinc oxide . . . also hats, clothing with sunscreen, etc.

i have been lurking around for a while, but i figured today was a good day to take the plunge and join your thread!! my family of five will be on the cruise and with the upcoming excursion booking (and the pif :guilty: )this trip is actually feeling like a reality. :woohoo:

all of your info so far has been so helpful so i wanted to share too! when i was on the panama canal site today i found a cool kids link with info about the canal. i'm not sure if you guys have seen it but it is really interactive for the kids (who am i kidding. i had a good time looking at it and seeing how the canal worked!). my 3 kids are pretty young (8, 5 & 3) but i am still looking for little things to try and explain the canal to them. here's the link www.pancanal.com/eng/persona/k/index.html

i loook forward to the next few months of planning! pam

Welcome!!! :cheer2: :cheer2: :cheer2:

Thanks for the links! My kids already tried them! :)

NY Times article:

The Claim: With Sunscreens, High SPF Ratings Are Best THE FACTS: Leif Parsons

The Relation Between Sun Protection Factor and Amount of Sunscreen Applied in Vivo (British Journal of Dermatology)Everyone knows that an SPF rating of 60 provides double the protection of SPF 30 — or does it?

Studies over the years have shown that sunscreen with an SPF, or sun protection factor, of 30 blocks about 97 percent of ultraviolet rays. A rating of 15 means 93 percent of UV rays are blocked, and anything higher than 30 remains in the 97 or 98 percent range.

In 1999 the Food and Drug Administration recommended that sunscreens with an SPF higher than 30 be labeled “30+,” mostly to prevent people from developing a false sense of security that might lead them to spend more time in the sun.

What many people do not realize is that the amount of sunscreen applied plays an enormous role. A study in The British Journal of Dermatology this year found that applying less than two ounces over the entire body at one time can leave people with an SPF rating far lower than what is on the bottle. Some studies have shown that people typically apply just 10 percent of the amount recommended.

It is also important to look for sunscreens that protect against UVA and UVB radiation. SPF ratings apply only to UVB rays, and some sunscreens provide no protection at all against UVA rays, which penetrate the skin more deeply. For broad protection, look for sunscreens with avobenzone, zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, all of which block UVA.

THE BOTTOM LINE

Above SPF 30, the increased protection is minimal.

As I can attest, the clear zinc oxide is great!
