SO I send DH an e-mail about the tall ship ta-do in LA.....Here is his response:

"...That's awesome.
Real treat...even for a bitter Coastie like me.
Boys will love it.
We'll have to convince them I asked them to sail over for us!"

Your kids will think Dad's a rock star!

I haven't done much with the laptop. I checked on the free fix link you provided but my model wasn't included. And I talked to a few shops around here and no one will take on the job of replacing the backlight. They say it's too time consuming and often times ruins the screen housing so they won't do it anymore. My other choice is to replace the whole screen but at that point I might as well just hunt down a good deal on a new one.

Sorry to hear this was the outcome...

May i suggest you wipe the drive and sell the thing on ebay for parts (maybe without the hard drive at all)? Apply the $50 or so you might get towards a new machine?

As of late I've sold all kinds of nonsense on ebay...

You can search on CLOSED listings for your model - then sort it by lowest priced listings first to find the "parts only" listings to get a feel for what ya might get. of course, yours' is missing an essential pair of components - the screen and probably the hard drive.

I might suggest you retire the machine to desktop only use by simply buying an external monitor - or hooking it up to a spare monitor. this would be almost as good as a regular desktop - and you could even plug in a regular mouse and keyboard too! That way you continue to get good use from it AND keep your data secure - and you won't mess with moving everything around again. This does raise the specter of having to keep TWO computers up to date with useful files assuming you'll run out to buy a notebook too. I for one have to have a notebook available. I take it around all the time - and conversely I have begun to covet a desktop too as of late - as i want to install a number of things in our home that can only be served with a high power (and high capacity) permanent configuration.

Wow! Sailaway could be amazing.

DSs will be so excited!! DH maybe notsomuch... according to him it is much more fun to see a tallship than to sail a tallship. He spent summer of '90 on Eagle.

I was thinking of you when I saw that ship listed.

Sorry to hear of this annoyance Andrew... alas, it's good to see there seems the situation is managable though...

So - again now... who was it who called in the fire brigade? And Andrew ... why are they saying you've been loitering so much with the "hot" fire fighters?

I guess I'm simply too predictable, eh?

Pity the officers didnt look so good as the lady in that picture, there was a lady in one of the teams but dressed for fire, and its a pity a lot of their time was wasted and people put at risk, by the actions of a 'fool'.

I am absolutely amazed at the skill of the plastic surgeon I went to.
I looked like a train wreck last week after the surgery. Now, it is just amazing! He took a pretty substantial hole in my nose and in a week and a half it looks almost normal. He hid all the stitches in the curve of my nose and you cannot see any marks. It still just a bit red. Wow! I think I am going to start saving for some more work that guy can do on me. ;)

So glad it is working out for you.

Andrew, when we were flying back from London on VA, someone lit up a cigarette in the bathroom. Well the flight attendant went on the intercom reading the riot act and telling the plane they were going to go up and down the aisle sniffing everyone til they found the culprit and turn them into the authorities in Orlando. They did (which was really funny to see)and they found him.He was duly turned in.His family was mortified as he was escorted off first!!!!!!

The things people do for a smoke, they make a lot of announcements not to do that, I would like to find our culprit.

That's great!

Well...

Thanks Julie...

I just went through that thread - a lot of chat and sympathy - but no one who was HOLDING tickets like me. And to think, I almost BOUGHT more ATA tickets for our return from Orlando to LA in September! Good thing I didn't, eh?

Thank goodness for that, at least!

Hi back a bit earlier than I thought, cant go into it too much, but it didn't happen at home and in the end involved three fire engines, and lots of work, for one persons silly actions!

All OK now.

Glad you are home safely . . .

Since he wants to convince the boys that he arranged it all, everyone should come up to him and thank him for arranging it?

I'll do it!:rotfl2:

BIP...

You're soooo funny.

Just say it like it is.

An' what's my opinion?

I'm just here to INNOCENTLY tag along with the crowd...

... so I'll just leave it at that. 'K?

I wasn't attempting to be funny but yeah, I don't hold back... I speak my mind. LOL You just learning that?

Lots of good stuff !!!!:goodvibes
uh, I wasn't saying that like it was a GOOD thing........

Just on the off-chance someone did not know this, you cannot renew a childs passport. You have to start from scratch and get the birth certificates, go to post office, apply, etc. The good news is I get to keep their 1st passports (their pictures were adorable). The bad news is we cannot find their birth certificates.:sad2:
I got on line as the girls were both born in Texas but separate counties.
Both counties had completely different criteria (of course Dallas was the worst) and I was geting frustrated. One would accept checks the other one would not (cash or money order required, but cannot send cash through the mail :confused3 )
Anyway I kept digging and there was a Texas Office of Vital Records site where I could order the birth certificates online and pay with a credit card. :thumbsup2 No printing out pdf forms, completing each one separately, mailing them to 2 separate places with separate forms of payment etc. One online form and done!
Now let's see if I actually get them. :)

Yeah you get different info on phone! I was told, by phone, that in order to get another "newer" copy of DH's birth certificate that we'd have to mail off pymt to order it and wait for it to come back 6-8wks after they processed the request/pymt. Then I found out that online you can order it and we had it within DAYS! it arrived like a few days after we ordered it online! Why they didn't tell me that on the phone is beyond me. LOL

Having not been along for the entire "ride" on the DIS board, I like having both sites. My DW uses the Pirate zone site exclusively to keep up to date and has only been on the DIS one time and finds it overwhelming. I find it absolutely amazing and gracious that someone(s) has taken the time and effort to set up the pirate zone site at no cost just for our little ol' cruise.
It's very helpful with the planning tools, ability to see a little bit about fellow pirates and now, being able to discuss some of the key planning issues.

My guess is that the extra discussion board is necessary so that we can effectively interact on the site. Yes, they could simply post the planning information links to the first page of this thread, but there would be no way for members to concisely and effectively post their suggestions/feedback/comments. Although it'd be nice to have the same log-in for both, I'm not a tech geek but I'm sure that the pirate zone board was set-up in the most effective way to accomplish the ability to interact with the planning info available on pirate zone site and there's no way to really accomplish it on the DIS without asking for own dedicated section. Plus, I just use the same username and password that I use on the DIS, so it's easy to remember.

Thank you, thank you to Tom, Ed and everyone else involved in establishing & maintaining the pirate zone site and board!! :worship: :worship:

Tom had graciously helped run the board when there was no one else that stepped up to the plate!!:worship: :worship:  It was hard to post REAL INFO which seemed to get lost in this thread. :rolleyes1 :rolleyes1 Glad you decided to register with the second thread. :thumbsup2 Our first Pirate Zone Site did not accomodate questions or feed back like the new one does!! We owe Ed Martin a big Thank You too!!!:worship: :worship:

okay i'm confused.
What do you mena first pirate zone site and now new one. We aren't using the old one anymore?????
I did notice that looking on the first pirate zone site I couldn't find info about the wristbands.

Hey I think it's great for the people that wanted it and I'm sure they are thankful and grateful for the work put behind it -but for someone who doesn't DESIRE that, it's not something that person would be grateful for and thanking people for. Great for those that do desire it. I"m just saying I'm on the DIS board... and I don't understand why we have to register at yet another board to get the info. We already have one website- and now another one? I just don't get that. Great for those that want it- but to be forced to register on a 3rd site (1= dis, 2= first pirate zone website 3= that pirate zone discussion board) in order to get all the info or to participate in group things is a bit ridiculous IMO and somewhat annoying. So now I not only need to read here and the pirate zone website but by some miracle also catch up on all the info on that new (to me atleast) discussion board and HAVE to participate there in order to participate in group things? What I mean is like Esteri apparently posted the info here AND there- I read it here, there is a pm and email to contact her- I'm not FORCED to go to yet another board and register and read there in order to participate in the shirts. I don't understand why to make it easier for those that don't want to (or can't) keep up with this thread we have to force EVERYONE to go to another board and register and read there. Why can't the info be here too for those that do not desire to do that? Those that want to stay on the DIS?

Anyway, yeah I wasn't around for awhile apparently when this happened so it has caught me by surprised that now we have yet another board where apparently the "important" stuff is being posted and no access to that group information without going to yet another board and registering and reading/posting there. So to make it easier on some people- we add extra to anyone/everyone else? well thanks alot people who didn't want to read this thread! LOL
:confused3
Whatever. i probably just won't participate in stuff that is only posted there and not posted here. I'm not inclined to start participating on yet another board. It's all I can do to try to keep up HERE. and Dis is where I want to be.

Who is Ed Martin?
I wouldn't suggest using the same name/password as you do here- there or on any other boards. That's not a good idea actually...

It looks as if the smoker will pay a $1000 fine for lighting up.... or $2000 fine if they tampered with the lavatory smoke detector. I don't know if these fines are concurrent - IE - $3000 for tampering AND lighting up.

I wasn't attempting to be funny but yeah, I don't hold back... I speak my mind. LOL You just learning that?

[ed]...

Well...

... if ya ask Alicia I'm STILL learning all sorts of stuff she had been tryin' ta drill into my pea brain these past 24 years. <wink> What was that dear?

Ok I'm managing to stay caught up now and I've got a 2 week break from school next week so hopefully I can participate more.
Very quickly

Andrew sorry to hear you had a bad day

April Birthdays - another one here!! All these Ariens on board that'll be interesting:rotfl: :rotfl:

Cats - never put cats together but we are good at bunny intros and would use the same methods as given above.

Tall ships - that sounds really cool

The things people do for a smoke, they make a lot of announcements not to do that, I would like to find our culprit.

Seriously,

... folks who are smokers have an addictive habit that they probably enjoy. I for one love "sweets" ... yet diabetes runs in my family and I should really lay off the sweets. However, I am "addicted" to my sweets and am guilty of "sneaking" bites here and there. I can't help but feel it is similar (if not worse) for smokers who find themselves in a helpless sensation about lighting up.

Now - from another perspective - I dislike smokers lighting up near me - especially in areas that are posted as "smoke free"... AND I dislike when I see smokers tossing their discarded cigarette butts other than appropriate trash or ash recepticles.

Now having said all that - I offer a solution conceived by DILBERT for those in this predicament:

Plus you know who has an April birthday :thumbsup2

In this case its sensibly disposing of the end, not putting it somewhere stupid deliberately. But yes Smokers are addicted and its hard to give up.

gotta run now neighbors - got chores to chase down - gotta pay for pre-school tuition - get records from the pediatrician for our daughters Jr K school enrollment - and attend a Brownie meeting this afternoon. Plus my spouse is away tonite so I'll be fending for the kids alone... so I may not be on line til maybe late -

SO ... have a great day everyone! See ya maybe on the weekend - or in friday chat.. maybe.
