God Bless your grandmother. I can imagine mine at 100... and God help us all!

only the good die young....right ;) My GGM was almost 100. We have a 5 generation photo from right after DD was born. At one point, she fell and had to go into the hospital. She was released to a nursing home. Within a week or so the nurses called and concerningly said, "Josephine is becoming verbally abusive to the staff." Our answer was, "Oh, i'm glad to hear she's back to her old self." (She had been verbally abusing us for years..)

Cadburys is the best chocolate ever! Hersheys, well lets just say I do not like it, Is Starbucks connected to it.

The Hershey company is the maker of Cadbury eggs and Cadbury bars over here.

haven't had it myself, but a friend was researching and found it was about $1500 per eye average,

That's what i think my co-worker paid. somewhere in the $1500-2000 per eye.

Tom, my name on the cruise will be "Can I get you another drink"...,

Can i take "Waiter, get this women a drink and put it on my tab?" :rotfl:

I have heard of some having issues with dry eyes. I guess everyone is a bit different when it comes to that:confused3

My co-worker has been using drops pretty frequently so i'm going to guess he has some of those issues.

Hey without my glasses...just give me a dog and a cane.... My eyes get progressively worse since my 20's. (DR have always said it's due to computer use and close-up work.)

Ok pirates. I need some vacation ideas. I've got a timeshare week that expires soon and I'm trying to figure out where to use it.

How about somewhere near Stace? Maybe Arizona or the Grand Canyon. Maybe a trip to someplace in upstate NY with a lake or Niagara Falls.

There's a few island on the left coast of FL that look fun and relaxing too.

Coke owns 400 brands in 200 countries, including Eight O'Clock Coffee, which IMHO is pretty carpy coffee, but better than Nescafe.

I'm up to my eyeballs in a Dasani sponsorship proposal right now...

Wow well I knew Coca-Cola owned a lot of brands, but I had no idea it was so many!

You guys are so good at dispensing advice, thought I'd ask....Should I go ahead with laser eye surgery? It will cost £400 ($800) per eye, hurt like hell for a couple of days, unable to drive for a week, but once fully healed should have 20/20 visioni.e. no glasses/contact lenses required:banana: . From what the consultant said, I should also wait until after TOAL as you can't be in strong sunlight for a couple of months after treatment.
a) Anyone out there been through this?
b) Is it a good price? I would consider a trip abroad for a better price (recovery in WDW sounds good !)

TIA

Celestine

You've already received some opinions, but heres mine:

It was one of the best things I ever did & I would do it again in a heartbeat!

I had lasik surgery done in Quebec 5 years ago because they had state of the art equipment & the doctors in Canada were the ones teaching the doctors here in the states. Not to mention that it was a LOT cheaper. Currently they are offering a special of $299 per eye at the Lasik Vision Institute. My eyes were guaranteed for life as long as I saw an approved follow up Opthmalogist in the U.S., which I did.

Yes I am just starting to need reading glasses, but I'll tell you it is 100 times better than having to wear glasses 24/7. I had dry eye for about a year after, but it's much better now. They give you special drops for your eyes & it works great for the dryness. I still have sensitivity to light, but I just wear sunglasses & it's fine. I was never told to avoid bright sunlight, but just to wear dark glasses for a couple of weeks. My night vision has never been good & lasik certainly didn't help.

During the procedure my eyes were numbed with drops & it was over in minutes. I did have a lot of stinging in my eyes that evening, but they gave me drops if that happened & they really helped. I heard that the lighter your eyes are, the more likely they are to sting. My eyes are hazel so might be true. By the next morning, I was perfectly fine with absolutely no pain & my eyes tested at 20/20 immediatly. I didn't drive for a few days, because DH tends to do all the driving, but I was never told I couldn't drive. :confused3

Quick update before I ketchup Brain scan normal !!! yea !!
So maybe I'm just turning into a real pirate... eye patch for my bum eye :rotfl2: :rotfl2:

Glad to hear your scan was normal. Is your eye still just as swollen? Do they have any idea what it is?

I had lasik back in May 2004. Mine was more expensive then (I forget the exact amount) but it included eye exams for the year and any repeat treatments needed. I also had a trip to Ca planned that year a few weeks later. All I was told was not to go swimming for at least a month after the surgery.
Now I had been wearing contacs for many years at that point and never had dry eye issues prior to surgery so that may have had an effect on my results:confused3
No pain:thumbsup2
They gave me plenty of meds in advance for the first day-eye drops, valium and pain killers. I wound up sleeping the rest of the day with a pair of goggles on. The goggles are to keep you from accidentally rubbing your eyes. I did have slightly dry eyes at first, but drops helped that and eventually it subsided.
My eyes are still sensitive to bright sunlight so I always have at least 2 pairs of sun glasses (one for car and one for purse). Sun glasses are also good for keeping crows feet away too:rolleyes1

A friend of mine went to the same place and she was very uncomfortable the first night:confused3 But she was fine after that.

Also, now one of my eyes was 20/20 and the other slightly less. They asked me if I wanted them to redo the one eye, but I decided against it. I'm over 40 and the slight undercorrection in one eye helps me avoid reading glasses for a while longer. Plus I never notice it unless I check by comparing eyes.

I would think that now is as good a time as any to get it done:confused3
I love the freedom from contacs:cloud9:

Good luck:thumbsup2

I had LASIK done 13 days ago. I paid $3900 for both eyes (and that was a special price they were running). This price includes the surgery, follow-up visits and any enhancements as long as they're done within a year of the surgery.

Like Laurie, I didn't have much pain at all. I was also given Valium before the surgery and lots of eye drops to use after. I was told to stay off the computer for 2 days following the surgery :scared1: , and I was told no swimming for 10 days following the surgery. I was able to drive the following day.

I was told that I was legally blind without my glasses (very near-sighted) and therefore, they had to run my numbers through their computer program to make sure I could have the LASIK procedure. If I didn't qualify for LASIK (based on my near-sightedness), I could have PRK done. It was explained to me that during LASIK, a flap is created on the eye, the flap lifted, the correction done with the laser, and the flap replaced. With PRK, rather than making a flap, the correction is done on the surface of the eye. They did tell me that the PRK is more painful and takes longer to heal. My doctor also will only do one eye at a time with PRK, whereas, with LASIK, they do both eyes at once. What you're describing almost sounds more like PRK to me. :confused3

I had a follow-up visit yesterday and was seeing 20/25 in my right eye and about 20/40 in my left eye. However, they intentionally under-corrected my left eye (monovision) so that I could continue to use it for near reading. I'm not sure that I like it so after I've waited 3 months for my eyes to heal, I can have that eye re-done if I choose, in which case I will probably need glasses for reading. They did say that the vision can still fluctuate for a few weeks after the surgery. I'm hoping that if I'm not seeing 20/20 with my right eye after 3 months, that they'll go ahead and re-do that one also.

Overall, I've been very pleased with the results so far. :thumbsup2

Anyone know if LASIK is good if you already have dry eyes that are sensitive to light? I've had my tear ducts plugged and already use special drops to keep my eyes from drying out. It doesn't help that I live in a dry climate, but the last thing I need is more sensitivity to light.

I thought about Arizona. There is some availability. Also some availability in Vegas. NY would be nice, but flight cost would probably be a lot more. I'll look into it though.

Hey, forgot to tell everyone. DS had his final check up with the neurosurgeon this week. He is all healed. No more fracture, no more air on the brain (....that's debatable :rotfl: ) and he's cleared for sports. No football until the summer, but he can play baseball now.

They showed us the CT scans from 4 days after the accident, 1 month after and then 3 months after. No sign of any more trauma in the area.

Alicias' got one brother and sister - plus the brother-in-law who are all optimologists. However, only the one brother is sailing with us... so if ya like you can ask him a bit. They've all done 1000s of patients... plus nearly every other thing with the eye I imagine. They're all in fairly busy practices.

Also, Alicia was her sisters' 1st Lasik patient... and she has had perfect results.

The only considerations I recall from 10 or more years ago when she had hers' done - were that she deliberately under-corrected one eye so she could read when our eyes go for reading ability - thus avoiding the absolute need for reading glasses. Plus - I know the current techniques are less traumatic then when Alicia had hers' done.

In general - it's a good thing - but you need to cover all the details with your medical provider to see if any exceptional risks apply to your situation. I for one have NOT had the procedure done. I've always had the notion that I have a youthful appearance - and in my line of business (the same I've been in 20+ years) most of the folks working for me are older - and a youthful appearance is definately a disadvantage. So glasses make me look a little older - hence I never considered it. However, if not for that I would have done it in an instant.

As for value - I have NO idea what a good value is. However, I might caution that you probably want the BEST professional to do the work as opposed to the cheapest on the planet. We all have our comfort zones for budget - but these are YOUR EYES we're talking about. Law suits are good for pursuing justice - but I think there is NO SETTLEMENT sufficient for any personal injury that might come to your eyes if a bona-fide mistake is committed.

Now as for MY consulting fee... I'll settle for a candid grin when we meet on the ship!

Oh yeah... I thought I would add the critics laundry list of concerns...

... off hand there was one fear of getting a "star" blur defectin your night vision. However the triggers for this happening are not known to me - and generally it does not result because of something you Doc does - rather it might result because of what your doc does NOT do in screening you... I suspect.

And for everything else you should be careful of - try this link:

Thanks to my secret mickey (Crash) I have a name tag already:woohoo:

But just as a reminder, I'm hard of hearing, so if you call my name (any name) I may not hear you, especially if my back is turned:confused3

Ok pirates. I need some vacation ideas. I've got a timeshare week that expires soon and I'm trying to figure out where to use it. My 'home' resort is in Texas but I've never seen it. I bought the ownership off ebay and have banked and traded my weeks ever since.

I'm looking at the middle of June. DS has 1 week in between regular school and summer school. I haven't been succesful finding anything in CA or Hawaii. So I'm trying to figure out somewhere else to go to spend a week. Don't want to go to FL because going to WDW would be too expensive. Besides airfare to FL has been outrageous lately.

So where would you enjoy a relaxing week at?

Why not come to Williamsburg or Virginia Beach? Williamsburg is great b/c you get to see some of the first places ever in America (like Jamestown, circa 1607) AND you can enjoy Busch Gardens Europe and Water Country. June is a great time to visit b/c the weather is nice. It's getting warm, but it's usually not hot and muggy yet (okay, I'm not too good a gauge of hot and muggy, but it is better than July or August). You're also not to far from Virginia Beach and the Atlantic Ocean (and me for that matter . .. LOL). There are lots of great timeshare trades here.

Let me know if you pick W'burg :)

Thanks to everyone for the Lasik discussion. This is such an amazing group. I learned a lot catching up tonight.

I have two friends and my brother that have had the surgery and all were very successful. My brother's case was unique b/c he was farsighted instead of nearsighted. I'm debating about it now as well. I am very farsighted, too, and I now need a bit (not much) of bi-focals. Should be interesting to see what they can do. Maybe at the end of the year if we have $$ left over from insurance . ..

Thanks for sharing the amazing info.

Ditto:thumbsup2
Are we going for the maiden voyage of one of the ships:confused3
or another August cruise:confused3

August is really good for our calandars. I vote for August - and better if not quite so close to labor day. And even better if there are a few ports WE have not been to lately (or ever). Ya figure we'll get a good sailing on a new ship with all that?

At any rate - today we didn't get the Wicked deal.... DrAT! However, we had a wonderful Daddy + Daughter day of exploration and shopping. e skipped the beach due to the heat at one point and the coolness at another time of the day. However, we spent some time reading in a huge library and shopping. Tomorrow we'll embark on a trip to Yosemite for the spring melt and likely heavy waterfall run off. I may be gone for the weekend - as I don't know if our hotel will charge for internet access - or if we'll even have any. SO may I bid one and all a wonderful and safe weekend to come. And may I leave ya with another edition of 7 questions to wind down this 4th redition of our meet thread.... as I'm sure monday will bring us into TOAL meet thread #5!

1) What is your favorite flavor of ICE CREAM or substitute favorite DESSERT

2) If you could have any car as your own "FREE" to use for a year - what would it be?

3) If you could visit any one place on the planet for 7 days - what destination would you choose. All expenses paid however, you cannot take any physical souveneers back with you.

4-5-6) If you had Aladdin's lamp and 3 wishes... what would be your 3 wishes? The same limitations apply as in the Disney version - you can't raise the dead, you can't make someone love you, and you can't wish for more wishes.

7) Tell us something about yourself that you've never posted here before.

OK... before I turn in tonite I'll try to come back and reply to these 7 questions!
