UGH! THAT was a long week at work. After I make my millions and spend my leisure time running Sk8ingfam Foundation, I swear I am going to make proposal deadlines on the 9th and 23rd of a month - why oh why is everything due on the 31st or 1st??? I fiished and sent 9, count 'em nine grant proposals today...for 7 different projects...in 4 states. When's my next vacation?? I need a beer.

Hi Everyone...I'm doing pretty good, thanks. Have been very tired and we took a little trip to WDW last week to celebrate ending chemo - that didn't help that . I got my procrit (sp?) shot yesterday and that seems to help quite a bit once it kicks in. However, I got some wonderful news yesterday that raised my spirits immensely.....

My tumor has shrunk to the point of being undetectable on the MRI I had Monday. I am so very grateful to all the Dr's and nurses who have taken care of me in the last months. They are really amazing!! I have a surgery date of Feb 15th. I had to make some pretty big decisions about all that yesterday, but I think I have made the right choices for myself.

Just popping in to say I'm back here in L.A. - it was a long (7 hrs) but uneventful trip. I do have a condition that frequently happens on the long straight stretches of I5 - it's call Lead Foot. I did so go over the speed limit - I had the iPod on shuffle - hardy any cars around - then I glanced at my speedometer and oops!! I slowed it down a lot - but then it seemed as if I was crawling!!
Got to get settled back in - then go & pick Matt up at school.
Doubt I'll get to chat tonght - have to help DD Lori w/a project.

Yes as others have said...."Welcome to the Northeast!" I was lunch monitor for a while, but I couldn't take it because I had to constantly remind them that they couldn't play tag, football, dodgeball, etc. NO contact sports allowed! They were allowed to run though....geez!

I'm not going to get into a rant here, but I really worry about how a lot of kids are going to deal with real life eventually.

I just realized I need to have their backpacks ready before we leave on the TOAL.

I've thought about that already & it scares me.

Wow - I hadn't even thought about the backpack! You're right, I need to get that ready before we leave. We still don't know how much school DS8 will miss. If they follow this year's schedule, he will miss 3 days. If they follow last year's schedule, he wll miss 8 days The board has been considering changing the year to start on Sept 2nd - but most insiders don't think that is too likely.

The main argument against it is that it would push the year further into the spring (we get out June 9th this year counting today's snow day) and that might 'discourage' teachers from continuing their education during the summer. Doesn't make much sense to me - first, they get PAID more if they continue their education which seems like a pretty big incentive to me! Second, even if the last few days of school overlapped their summer-school classes, it would be the very beginning of the semester and there is always the possibility that going back super early in the fall will overlap also and that would be during finals. Lastly, many of us manage to go to school and get advanced degrees while working all-year, 40-hour per week jobs, so the idea that school running a few more days would discourage someone just sounds silly. Sorry about the rant - this just really bugs me!

We probably won't know for a few more months.

That whole situation is just crazy. Well, I think your kids have a great excuse for missing a few days of school since the board couldn't get their act together to decide on a start date more than 6 months out.

I have to sit and do the business taxes this weekend, before I can even think of doing our personal ones.
No DIS for me this weekend.

We went to WDW and DCL right before school opened 2 years ago. I made sure the backpacks were in order and the clothes were laid out before we left for the trip. In fact, I remember having the backpacks stuffed by the first week of August.

This year, my kids will miss the first 4 days of school. I'll obviously have to do the same sort of drill, PLUS make up 4 nights of homework on the first night back to school!

Wonder if you can ask teachers over summer for first couple days work?

Difference is when she gets delayed etc... she always get compensation for it. That is how she had so many credits with United.

Key word in that sentence (and I mean it lovingly) is SHE.

She gets them because she demands them.

It's about a 6 hour flight for us on the 16th. And we figure to relax at the hotel and get up early the next morning (and save money for shopping ).

I was hoping to meet up with some other DISers who have gone the same route.

DS starts high school the next day making the timing more important than it ordinarily would be

Same here, DD starts her freshman year of High School on Sept 2nd, well I hope it is. School normally starts here the day after Labor day. I have to have everything ready for her and DS starting middle school.

We were really on the fence on whether we would go or not because of orientation but talking to a few parents in my neighborhood they said they don't do much at orientation and she will already have gotten a tour of the school when the whole 8th grade goes in May. She also cheers so won't be able to try out for the fall team because she will miss the two weeks of practices at the end of August but can try out for the winter team for basketball. I think she can live without cheerleading for 3 months

Let's see....my son has attended school exactly 1 1/2 days since Dec 12. No trauncy notice, no phone calls (except the daily annoying recorded..your child has missed periods 1, 2, 5 - they never get it right), no letters, nothing. Of course his counselor does know of the situation, but I have not provided any notes or doctors excuses.

So if I take him out for 4 or 5 days next year for TOAL, I highly doubt they will say or do anything.

We don't get teacher assignments until early to mid-August. I may not even know which teachers my kids have before we leave for DL!

DH will speak to the principal about the trip. This one is his job since I handle all of the day-to-day school stuff. The only problem is that he's too chicken to tell the principal!

I don't have a flight booked yet, but planning on getting there around 2 or 3 (hopefully). Probably won't be able to plan anything concrete until we get closer, but it's good to know I'll be able to meet you (and Stace and Tom (maybe) and others) in advance

Yeah, Andrew will probably miss out on band ( I think he might be relieved about that )
I'm hoping to talk to someone at the parent meeting they have scheduled on Monday and maybe they'll let him join anyway.
