8/17/08 Captain Jack's Repossession Repo Cruise to PC thru TPC #15 /Life After the PC

I finished the slideshow that I was working on, and posted it over on the photo sharing site.

Repo "Share a Dream" Slideshow

Thanks to all who have posted pictures on the smug mug site! There are pirates that we shared many fun times with, and had few or no pictures of, but now we do! There are still some that we don't have any pictures of, too. So if you haven't thought about uploading your photos, please do so!

We are really enjoying reliving the memories of the TOAL and seeing things that we missed out on. Thanks to Arlene for posting the videos of the Mickey Bar Eating Contest. We weren't able to attend that one (spa maybe?), but it was a lot of fun to watch. Tom, Tina, and Shelley hosted a really fun event! Great job all!

I loved this. I know I have to upload pics to Smug Mug. Where did you find this piece of music I do not think I have it in my Disney music collection. It sounded new to my ears.

Anyway, I somehow left the power cord for my laptop in NC so I've been without a computer all week (the agony!) which is why my ketchup is going back so far. But I got it back this morning when I saw my family in SC at my brother's Chief Petty Officer ceremony. Not being a Navy expert, I had to look up what this was really about and it means that he was selected by his commanding officers to be promoted from an enlisted sailor to an officer. Pretty cool! My mom, his wife, and his daughters actually pinned the pins to him during the ceremony.

Isn't he cute in his new hat? He doesn't have to wear the white toothpaste cap anymore! :rotfl2:

:yay: :dance3: Congratulations to your db! My dad retired from the Navy as a Chief.

Same here - and I was travelling by myself!! I even emailed my mother several times saying "I'm still alive..." trying to give a hint that I would like to hear something back. :rotfl: Almost made me afraid that something terrible had happened and they didn't want to send me any messages because they couldn't think of anything positive to say.

Exactly! LOL! I'm just glad I'm not the only one!
;)

What kind of clips, Cheryl? Are these the "innocent" clips or the "not guilty" clips? Some pirates were supposedly more entertaining than others... :lmao:

Yes, I saw it. Unfortunately it was announced 2 weeks after my birthday which was just a few days after we got off the ship! I could have stayed if I had known!!!

Let me add my thanks and tears to everyone else's. That was the best pick-me-up! Not that I haven't been looking at everyone else's pictures (well, not this week), but seeing them put together with music made it that much more special.

Okay, I think I'm caught up now. Except for whatever has taken place while I've been longwinded here. So let me go ketchup again...

I sent post cards to myself and another friend here in Atlanta, my sister in SC, my brother in NC, and my parents in NC and NONE of them have arrived. I was starting to think I dropped them in the wrong box at guest services!

Is your Navy db stationed at Camp LeJuene? That's where one of my db's and I were born. ;)

Its the Med and Baltics in 2010.

http://www.wdwinfo.com/wdwinfo/cruise-new/news.htm

Transatlantics April ! and September.

Thanks...

Dh would like to do one of these --
From England, the Magic is scheduled for four 12 night sailings starting on 6/12. These are rumored to be the Baltics, including Copenhagen, Oslo and Warnemunde, Germany.

And I would rather do --
Finally, on 9/18, the Magic should be heading "home" on a 14 night Transatlantic voyage

Thanks Mike,
It seems like a dream but it was only a month ago. Someome needs to do a subtitled version with all the names :rolleyes1

I just started pulling the video off my HD camcorder, so I'll have to see what goodies are there.

It's from the 100 Years of Magic Celebration in 2001, for what would have been Walt's 100th birthday.

I had it on a CD by itself from some promotion. If you want to PM your e-mail address, I can try to send it to you.

DH HATES the cold so, I would think it would be too chilly for him, also!

He wants a new DSLR, also. He has now decided that mine isn't *right*. I told him I picked the model I did because it was lighter weight! LOL!

SUMMARY of what we know, or think we know. Nothing confirmed as yet by DCL.

2010

There is a press event on October 6th,
We are told the information will be in ‘preview’ on DCL website from October 7th.
On sale is said to be October 21st, some reports of the 14th.

TRANSATLANTIC

There will be an Eastbound Atlantic repo, from Port Canaveral, which will be for at 14 nights on April 10, a transatlantic voyage, via Castaway cay to Barcelona; it arrives on 4/24 at Barcelona Spain.

In 2007, this was Castaway Cay, Six days at sea, Tenerife, Cadiz Spain, Gibraltar, and Barcelona.

THE MEDITEREAN-HOME PORT BARCELONA –PART 1

4/24 it begins with an 11 night sailing.
5/5 there's a 10 night,
5/15 an 11 nights
5/26 a 10 nights,
These look like the 2007 Med trips to Sicily, Naples, Rome, Sardinia, La Spezia for Florence and Pisa, Marseilles, and Villafrance for Monte Carlo.

WEST COAST EUROPE/ ATLANTIC TO UK-SMALL REPO

On 6/5 there's a 7 night. The Magic be travelling from, Barcelona to England.

A few small rumours of, Portugal, Madeira, Cadiz, Gibraltar? On the list, Western Europe, UK.

HOME PORT -UK

In Europe the home port is considered to be Southampton or Harwich, both UK. Both about 90 mins from London Airports Heathrow and Gatwick, but also Stansted for Harwich.

BALTIC

From port lists and schedules we have seen we have worked out there is most likely –
NORTHERNEUROPE.jpg

Four 12 night cruises to the Baltic’s from these home ports. I have been posting on various threads since April and more in May, that I felt it was the Baltic sea and Northern Europe, the appearance of the Disney Magic’s name being listed on the Copenhagen port schedule found by Steph, -Taysmom.
http://www.tv.cphport.dk/coins/KbhHa...enAgent&lang=1
for June and July has supported this, starting on June 15th at Copenhagen, and made us feel it is the Baltic, we have an arrival time of 7am in Copenhagen.
2010.jpg

This is a screen print of the last one.

St. Petersburg in Russia is a popular cruise port and has been mentioned a lot, it clearly has been an integral and planned part of the Baltic cruises. A lot of cruise ships ‘overnight’ in St Petersburg.

We know Germany is included; the port of Warnemunde(for Berlin) has been mentioned a lot, and appeared on the port schedule for Denmark. In fact we have a departure time of 6pm from Germany.

Other ports mentioned, Gothenburg & Stockholm in Sweden.

First Baltic cruise is anticipated as June 12th, Last Baltic cruise ends July 30th in the UK.

7/6
7/18

WEST COAST EUROPE/ ATLANTIC TO BARCELONA-SMALL REPO-THE PHANTOM CRUISE
On July 30, it appears that there's going to be an 8 night sailing. This is back to Barcelona from UK. The reverse of the 7 night one above, (June 5th.)

THE MEDITEREAN-HOME PORT BARCELONA –PART 2
The schedule from there is the Med again, as above,
11 night on 8/7,
10 night on 8/18,
11 night on 8/28,
10 night on 9/8.
WESTBOUND REPO TRANSATLANTIC.

There will be a westbound transatlantic back following the same route as the Eastbound but in reverse, on 9/18, the Magic will be heading to PC via Castaway, on a 14 night transatlantic voyage
I understand a considerable number of people some 50+ have asked to be waitlisted for suites for summer 2010.
The 50% deposit offer from DCL is due to end October 1st, but I understand it could be extended for a final time of one month to October 31st and then end that would cover he release of 2010 cruises. However note often the special cruises have a higher deposit pp.
The Wonder will remain doing ¾ night cruises all 2010, a couple of 5 night ones, with two stops at Castaway cay and the Magic, will remain on its 7 night Caribbean trips from January to May and September to December, generally as now, might see a slight change in port schedule to cut down on fuel costs.
Tortola for example saves fuel on St Maarten on the Eastern. Port times could be reduced to allow the Magic to go slower on three engines.

Rut roh......I just realized that I'm hosed :cool1:

The 2010 dates will match up perfectly with my 50th B-day in Sept pirate: especially the last Med run and Repo to PC.

Thanks to everyone posting their photos. I am still going through ours for red eye and such but have snagged some of the pictures through the PC and am looking for some to fill in the missing card from our first week on the ship. That is really helping. :)

I think that I told a few that I videoed the A&A show and once we get that that point I will have DH convert it to computer format so that we can post it. I tried taking pictures as well for the first couple songs but about 20 minutes into it decided to just stand to the side about 3 rows from the front and just tape it. I am hoping that someone got some good shots of them. I have a few but not great since it was a juggling act to do both.

The dates for the Baltic don't look good for us. I was hoping to be able to do another repo but that wouldn't work for school dates and DS will be starting 6th grade in Sept 2006 so he would miss getting to know the school and teachers where this year he was already familiar with the school layout. We will have to consider airfare and such, then it would be nice to finally sail on the Wonder since 4 days isn't worth it to us even before the repo. We'll see. There are [gasp] other cruise lines so Alaska is still a possibility.

Is your Navy db stationed at Camp LeJuene? That's where one of my db's and I were born. ;)

That is close to our neck of the woods. :) We are down the street from Cherry Point. Both kids were born at Onslow Hospital though.

Thanks...

This makes it much harder for me. I can't do a repo in Sept. Can't take Trevoy out of school and not sure who I could leave him with. OMG just realized he'll be 15 by then!

I'd love to do an April repo, especially since my birthday is 4/9, but again, Trevoy will be in school.

I may check into a Baltic but I wanted to go in August and now looks like they may be back in the Med by then.

UGH!! I don't like this at all if this is truly what's happening.

I'll tell dh!
My favorite lense is my 18 - 200 Macro. It has a *fish eye* so, we get quite a bit in the picture.
I have a 70 - 300 and antoher one that is slipping my mind.....
I told him that he was welcome to buy the heavier Canon for himself but, I was keeping mine! LOL! I am a GIRL!

So, now we know that we have a reason to go on the repo......

That is close to our neck of the woods. :) We are down the street from Cherry Point. Both kids were born at Onslow Hospital though.

:) 11 yrs ago when I need to get a birth certificate ASAP ( it turned out my mom just had a military one for me and until I was 21 my military ID was used instead....) I had a friend who lived near there and she went and picked one up for me at the Coutny courthouse! LOL!
Since 9/11 they probably don't let people do that anymore! LOL!

This makes it much harder for me. I can't do a repo in Sept. Can't take Trevoy out of school and not sure who I could leave him with. OMG just realized he'll be 15 by then!

This is an awesome spec for a Canon DSLR. If you had no lenses - or desire to have cross compatability between your current DSLR body and a new one - the SONY Alpha A-900... it's $3000, full frame and has in camera sensor shift vibration reduction good for all their lenses. The only thing is it's rumored their lenses are expensive. Negating any cost advantage in that respect... supposedly. And with such a small price difference between the A-900 and Canon 5D Mk2... the Canon offers more shooting power with much higher ISO sensitivity and IQ performance expectations. HOWEVER... the 1st pre-prouction image samples vailable for review at the higher ISO limits of the 5D mk2 suggest a flat saturation curve according to some of my friends ... while I feel there is some flatness... it can be corrected post camera .... and what really matters are the noise levels and random nature of the noise... as opposwed to uniform noise patterns which would prove vexing.

In truth - a new camera body might manifest any number of defects or annoyances which a photographer might consider unacceptable or tolerable. With me the 1st consideration is usually what sort of bargin I can obtain. Seeing as these things tend to melt in price like an ice cube in a hot summertime car. The 40D is now obtainable for $965 avg on the street and it's only 1 year old with an initial price of $1400 or so. Of course, Canon did just introduce a replacement of sorts - a 50D which I'm mildly coveting.

One thing to keep in mind though... the 5D .. which the 5D Mk2 replaced stayed in the market without replacement for 3 years... which islonger than cutomary for Canon. So if you're thinking of waiting for a 5D Mk2 replacement to come along soyou can snap up a reduced price 5D Mk2 .. you may have to wait 3-4 years. AND THAT may prove too long for MY taste. I'm young enough to wait for a few new models to eclipse a model I really would be happy with.... but i don't know if I care to wait another 4 years to get a deal on a decent full frame DSLR body.

At any rate - as for lenses ... this is a fairly personal matter. One might like a full focal range... and some might pursue the purity of a few prime lenses. Some might need the pull and speed necessary for low light sports phtography while others know they have the opposite in mind. While others might want the lightest possible camera bag when others are perfectly happy ONLY when they are lugging around several of their heaviest, most powerful lenses... along with spare batteries, accessories and even a spare DSLR body!

So ... for my taste I am tolerant of the "regular" Canon lenses which are lighter smaller and cheaper. Only I lean towards the lenses which are favorably reviewed and/or tested. Such as on fred miranda (dot com) and in resolution tests with dp review and to a lesser extent on popular photography.

What this means in simple terms is I get by on a couple of simple common lenses. I shoot primarily with a Canon 28-135 Image stabilized zoom. It's relatively cheap ($350-450) as the 1st consumer grade image stabilised lens design sold in the world supposedly. So it's a 1st generation type of image staiblized design however it has good optics and build quality... and I feel it's not too bulky or heavy. My other lense of choice is a sharp and contrasty 70-300 IS with 3rd generation IS mechanics. Even so - this lens as my 2nd most popular is rarely used but inexpensive considering how well it tests ($575-650).

If I were to buy again today and if I were less concerned over the value or cost... and weight ... I would go FIRST with a 24-70 f2.8 L for $1,200... or the discontinued 28-70 f2.8 L ($900) or the slower 24-105 f4 IS L at $1,600. Next would come a 70-200 f2.8 IS L for $2600 or the slower 100-400 f4.5-5.6 IS L for the bargain price of $1400. Another near essential lense is the ultra wide 16-35 f2.8 L for $1300. All told... just to have a relatively complete focal range at your disposal would cost $1300 ultra wide + $1200 (24-70) + $2600 (70-200) + $400 for a 2x Canon teleconverter = just $5500 for your L glass from 16-200mm at a constant (parafocal) f2.8 among 3 lenses. Then your reach extends to 140-400 with the teleconverter at f5.6 and a super hefty overall weight.

If I were you I'd avoid any of the "S" lenses which are designed for only cropped sensor camera bodies. I would also avoid any of the consumer level super wide zoom lenses .. IE the 28-200 f3.5-5.6 as I had one of these and it's a FORSTED COKE BOTTLE of a lense ... in the "L" range however ... I like the 28-300 f3.5-5.6 IS ($2300) .... except it is super heavy and super bulky. It does substitute reasonably for a 28-70 and 70-200 plus 1.5 teleconverter. However, the 28-70 and 70-200 would all be parafocals at f2.8 whle the 28-300 has the shifting aperature with focal range. However, with fewer lens swaps you'd introduce less dust to your camera body interior... and I have had dust issues before!

canon_024.jpg

Above is an image of a 28-300 f3.5-5.6 L cutaway and below is the same type of lense on a professional EOS 1D Mk 2 body
