8/17/08 Captain Jack's Repossession Repo Cruise to PC thru TPC #15 /Life After the PC

Now DS14 plays my clarinet that I bought with my babysitting money 25 years ago:lmao:

He is working his add off in marching band this year:rolleyes:
His football team's game was picked to be Fox's Game of the Week for tomorrow and they may show his marching band as well on tv:woohoo:

What show??? I'll dvr it!!! :yay:

I was on Drill Team in HS. I don't know if they do that outside of TX. Drill Team = Dance Team. We did formations with the marching band and we did routines during halftime at football games and sometimes Basketball games.

DH and I both played clarinet in jr high and high school. I love marching in half times and parades. It gave me such a thrill when people cheered for us! Of course the last time I played was at my HS graduation 28 years ago.
Alana plays Bass Clarinet and clarinet. Kathryn wants to play flute when she gets into middle school.

The HS stadium is REALLY close to my house...so, during football season on Thursday afternoons and Friday nights I can hear the band! :yay: I love the drums in a marching band! :yay:

Fair warning to all parents, this all backfired on my parents as I wanted to major in music for college and they would not permit me (since they were paying). Here is my story I will share with everyone...............

Not sure how my parents knew what instrument to take where, but it was a blast, I went to summer music camp 8-12 grade and played everything I was in a least 5 concerts a weekend and every other weekend at least 8. I also was our substitute organist at our church during HS. During college I did marching band, orchestra, and concert band for my general education requirements and also marched in drum corps. I still want to get a music degree, one of these years. I still play; I have a keyboard, drum sticks & pad, flute, clarinet and bassoon. I am dying to get my hands on a Selmer Mark 6 Tenor Sax.

So be careful as you can end up with a monster like me.

WOW!!!

We had an AWESOME drill team and marching band in HS. We would both always win some award in parades! I loved it! This was in southern California.

Forgot to say this! Alana's HS band is going to going to DL May 29-31 to perform! Of course she is very excited about this!

I finally got through sorting some more photos. Of the 250 I took at Los Veranos, I have it down to 70-some. I tried to get everyone as they came in on the final line (remember - I was an "observer"!) but the rain thwarted that goal. Some photos were useless since all you saw were rain. Some were missed as I tried to get a poncho over the camera. Some are just photos of people's chins which isn't all that interesting ;) So I got rid of the junk and cropped some of the ones that really needed it.

Wow they are wonderful pics - I only have 1 photo from the Ziplining so I'm thrilled with the 3 you got of us. That was such a wonderful afternoon, we are all still talking about how much fun it was to anyone that will listen :rotfl:

Thank you so much!

Have a happy one!

I found out last night-It is only local Fox news so I don't think it will show anywhere but here in VA:guilty:

Last Friday when we went to the football game, the opposing team had a dance team. Since only the home team goes on the field at half time (and it was an away game for us), I don't know if DS's school has a dance/drill team as well. I'll see at tonight's home game.

We have to make sure to sit in the "correct" spot this time. Apparently, according to a friend, the band people don't sit with the football people:rolleyes1 There was some drama between the two groups and they sit a bit apart now:rolleyes: Not a big deal as we didn't notice any problem at the last game:confused3

That is so cool:cool1:

Congrats to Alana:cheer2:

Can't wait to see the pics:thumbsup2

THere are 2 or 3 people from the 1pm group that I practiced on. I know GrandmaX3's DH is there, but the other folks I don't know if they are DISers or not :lmao:

I probably got about 60% of the 2pm group. Tom - There is a really good one of Mitch. Sadly, a LOT of them have the strap from the cable right in front of the face.

They are up on the smugmug site here: http://thepiratezone.smugmug.com/gallery/6003387_GHUdH

Pam -- THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!
You just made my morning... I shouldn't be DISing but I peeked & saw your link & check out pix. You have 2 AWESOME pix of my son (right at the beginning, kid in white shirt on left). Again, thx for sharing these! He is going to be real excited to be able to share with the kids in school (who don't believe he really did the whole thing).

I don't know how things are done any more but, we went on the field at every game but, we faced our own side when we performed. :)

I guess you better find out exactly where you need to sit. ;) I'ld hate for you to mingle with the enemy! LOL!

You are very welcome! I was hoping that some of the pics would be useful :thumbsup2 Los Veranos didn't recommend bringing cameras without a neck strap, so I know a lot of people (including my DH) did not carry a camera on the adventure. Since I didn't zip (and I am still PERFECTLY happy with that!) I was able to have my camera. If only it hadn't picked right in the middle of everyone coming in to start pouring!

I still need to finish the rest of the photos. Since I have tons of multi-shots and a mix of good and bad, I need to sort them all out before they can be uploaded. For the ziplining ones, I did some photoshop work also (cropping, sharpening, etc) which was a little time-consuming. Most of the rest of what I've uploaded so far I haven't had to do much editing and hopefully it will continue that way...

Paula - I'm glad you liked the photos! I had just listed to your voicemail on the podcast when I saw your post above. Dan just asked last night if you were home yet - he hasn't seen you on KivaFriends yet :)

We had drill/dance team in Ohio. I was on it. Lots and lots of kicks.

So...I played the pompoms in marching band :)

That's wierd. Gotta love parent cliques.
When I was in HS both bands played half time and the winning school went back on the field for a "victory march" after the game. Those were always fun - we just ran out and played 1-2 songs and they were always dance team songs, usually Hang on Sloopy and something else. 'Cause what else would an Ohio HS play???

Hope everyone is doing well. My life is over as I know it. I have decided that the good Lord didn't want me to have too quiet a life so he blessed my with my dd! :goodvibes But now we have a new addition ---- a trumpet! :scared1: Yes, last night was instrument rental night so we now have a trumpet, music stand and band book. DD tells me that they will be playing in the Christmas parade. She will be singing with the chior/ensemble before the parade and then she will have to hustle to the staging area to get with the elementary band! I figure that she can practice after school while she waits for me to come home! :thumbsup2 I hope, cause it doesn't sound too good right now!:scared1: But she is ahead of the game because she can read music!

Ear plugs are your friend.... :thumbsup2

OMG I hear ya on this. At least the trumpet doesn't require "alternative transportation" :scared1:
Our school starts strings only in 4th grade, band in 5th. DS10 came home Tuesday with a sign up form, he had already filled in all of his information and his instrument of choice...the bass.

Yes, my kid wants to play an instrument that is not only bigger than him, but also sounds terrible when not accompanied by a full orchestra.

:rotfl2: :rotfl: :rotfl2: When Jakob had to choose - at the start of 4th grade he was leaning towards violin (bass isn't a choice for us :thumbsup2 ). He got talked around to Viola - not by us (though we completely supported that choice - it's missing that really high string, and George didn't want to haul around a cello) No. The Music Director at Dad's church did the job for us, and here is what he said....

I used to lead an orchestra in San Francisco, and I got really tired of paying a mediocre viola player the same as a top notch violinist. There aren't enough viola players in the world, and too many of everything else. You'll always have work.

Yeup. The old money angle did it. We just traded up his old 12" viola for a 14" this week. Should have traded to the 13" last year, but never quite got around to it - so we skipped sizes. He's quite happy now. Though I think if they'd offer guitar or percussion he'd jump ship - that's not offered until high school though.

:lmao:
I really wanted to play the trumpet, but no one else in my school was playing it and I didn't want to be a 1 person trumpet section. So I played the flute along with about 70% of the girls in my class. I lasted about a year and a half and never could sight read music.

My DH actually played the flute until high school and then decided he would be less likely to get his add kicked if he switched to French horn.

I started out on flute too! Switched to Oboe in between 8th and 9th grade. I always was one for the weird stuff...

I definitely know where y'all are coming from with the instruments. DS9 plays the fiddle/violin (his lessons are technically "fiddle" but so far there isn't any real difference) and has since he was about 5.

Boy, we'd love to find a fiddle instructor. That's what Jakob wants. And yes, you can fiddle on a viola - he confirmed that before he settled on his choice. :rotfl:

Both kids are learning to play the recorder in music class at school. This is standard for the 3rd - 5th grade there. They are having fun with it and it is somewhat tollerable while they are playing.

Jakob came home with his Tenor recorder yesterday. It was his big "surprise" for the family. Our school starts in 1st grade with a pentonic flute, switches to regular soprano recorders in 4th or 5th, and then introduces the three different recorders in 6th through 8th. Issac was completely jealous, but being in 1st grade, he's still learning how to blow - he won't get his flute until later in the year.

I think the students have the choice of dropping strings/winds starting in 7th, but they have to stay on the recorder through 8th.

OMG they played my Voicemail - I didn't know, I've not had an email! Thats so cool!

Please say Hi to Dan for me, I've been frantically trying to catch up and I've reloaned all my Kiva credit but not had a chance to get to the chat or the message boards on KFs yet. I will, I promise but probably not until next week.

Both kids are learning to play the recorder in music class at school. This is standard for the 3rd - 5th grade there. They are having fun with it and it is somewhat tollerable while they are playing. I grew up playing the piano and DH played the trumpet [still has it] in MS and HS. He was in the marching band in HS. He was in the marching band at VT I think one year before his engineering degree kept him from continuing. I have a feeling that one or both of the kids will want to follow in their daddy's footsteps and march.

Oh get ear plugs or make them practice outside. The recorder is the devil's flute, I swear. My classroom was next to the room that they used for music last year so when the third graders would come in to practice, I thought I was going to rip my hair out. My 3 & 4 year old students kept asking, "What IS that noise?" So, I, being the mature teacher that I am, told them, "Oh they're practicing for the dying cat parade." Needless to say, my students believed me and for the entire year, whenever they heard the recorders, they would just say, "oh, dying cat parade." One of the 4 year olds actually asked me when the parade was. I just laughed. They're so literal. I love it.

Woo hoo! I made it through one more day's worth of photos :cool1: This is sea day #2 and includes the Castaway Club reception. Only 18 photos this time.

:yay: A picture of me! DH and the kids are going to crack up! It is proof that I had a drink on the ship! :rotfl: I think that is the one that I tried to give to dh and he refused! :rotfl2: That's why he is making that face at me! :lmao:

Thanks for the great pics of me! :)

I have hardly any photos of me on this trip so its nice to prove I was actually there. I really like the one with Capt Tom.

You rock!

I was thinking the same thing about the picture of me! LOL!

That is one of the funniest things I have heard in a long time! :rotfl2: And you are right, at that age they are very literal!

Hi All

I know that I have been MIA but getting back into reality:sad2: We have been transitioning to our new company at work which has not been fun. Kids have finally gotten back into their school routine but Cherie and I feel like we are Supershuttle running back and forth. Well one of the the good things that came from our being bought by a new company was that I had a chance to cash out a lot of my paid time off without penalty. We have been needing another computer in the house (Madison needed one for school work) so I got a new laptop. I have been waiting to get a new computer so that I could do videos since my other two are just to slow to handle them. I have put together my first video of the cruise (actually a slide show as a movie) so I hope that you enjoy it. I would also like to thank Phil Collins for the music since it was perfect for this and everyones pictures. I would recommend doing it in DVD mode unless you have a really fast internet connection.
