8/17/08 Captain Jack's Repossession Repo Cruise to PC thru TPC #15 /Life After the PC

Please pray harder, folks!

I was in a meeting with my pastoral council an hour ago, discussing strategies to help the many flood victims out there, when our parish office rumbled and shook.

Several blocks away, in the flooded area where houses are half-submerged, a house blew up.

Reports are conflicted and varied right now, but we are all praying that no one was near enough to be hurt or killed. The houses in that area have all been evacuated since Sunday, so I am hoping that no one was inside.

Anyway, please keep our communities in your prayers as we try to work through this massive flood.

Many thanks.

YIKES!
We are praying.

I've been told by a few people at the college that they  me. So if they get an opening soon...:rolleyes1 (Actually i know that they have one but it won't open for a few weeks) It's weird. I've felt more appreciated during the last two weeks than I was the entire two years i was at the county.

I've also got a possible temp job lined up for a month.

and

THE CITY OF FRED CALLED ME FOR AN INTERVIEW FOR A PLANNER POSITION TODAY>>>>>>>> THe interview is on Monday afternoon. UH....HELP.....I need a suit... I have none that fit anymore... CARP.... :headache: Well time to see what goodwill has....

Good news on the interview and the college folks loving you K!
Maybe look at TJ Maxx or JC Penney for a reasonably priced, decent looking suit. The cheaper ones seem to hold up for about 3-5 wearings. That would at least get you through interviews for notsomuch money.

Hope everyone is doing well. My life is over as I know it. I have decided that the good Lord didn't want me to have too quiet a life so he blessed my with my dd! :goodvibes But now we have a new addition ---- a trumpet! :scared1: Yes, last night was instrument rental night so we now have a trumpet, music stand and band book. DD tells me that they will be playing in the Christmas parade. She will be singing with the chior/ensemble before the parade and then she will have to hustle to the staging area to get with the elementary band! I figure that she can practice after school while she waits for me to come home! :thumbsup2 I hope, cause it doesn't sound too good right now!:scared1: But she is ahead of the game because she can read music!

OMG I hear ya on this. At least the trumpet doesn't require "alternative transportation" :scared1:
Our school starts strings only in 4th grade, band in 5th. DS10 came home Tuesday with a sign up form, he had already filled in all of his information and his instrument of choice...the bass.

Yes, my kid wants to play an instrument that is not only bigger than him, but also sounds terrible when not accompanied by a full orchestra.

all this band & music talk is cracking me up!!
My son (now 18) went from trumpet in 6th & 7th grade to cymbals, bass drum, snare drum and a full drum set. It is painful at first......but I must say it is nothing short of amazing to see a true musician blossom from all those years of "practice". As they get older it is so fun to see/hear their shows & concerts evolve from nothing to a great show.
Support those music and the arts programs! It makes for a well rounded child.

OMG! That is too funny. You son and I have something in common. I got into instrumental music in 3rd grade and my instrument? The cello! OK here I am an 8 yr old lugging a cello that is a bit bigger than me back and forth to school in the winter walking! I only lasted the school year and 1 recital. The school milege failed and the program was dropped. I sounded like I was killing a cat! :scared1: (Honestly, no animals were harmed!)

Thankfully dd had the brains to get a more compact instrument. I know she wants to do marching band not orchestra. She sounds like a moose! She is trying to do the U of M chant thing, but it doesn't sound like it. Apoligies to Deanna for the U of M thing!:scared1: Go Buckeyes!

I know! DD is in her 3rd year of chior and I can see the progression. The choir director has informed us parents not to tell our kids not to sing. I still do, but I tell her to go in her room!

My best friend in school played the cello. She rode the bus, but her mom had to drive her to school on orchestra days.

I really wanted to play the trumpet, but no one else in my school was playing it and I didn't want to be a 1 person trumpet section. So I played the flute along with about 70% of the girls in my class. I lasted about a year and a half and never could sight read music.

My DH actually played the flute until high school and then decided he would be less likely to get his add kicked if he switched to French horn. :rotfl:

But do I have to support music programs with an instrument that doesn't fit in my car??? :rotfl2:

I definitely know where y'all are coming from with the instruments. DS9 plays the fiddle/violin (his lessons are technically "fiddle" but so far there isn't any real difference) and has since he was about 5. He really, really wanted to play since he was about 3 and I finally gave in at 5. I would not say he has any great natural ability, but 4 years of lessons and at least some practice has made a difference.

At least he has moved up a couple sizes over the years - his first violin was really cute, but the sound was horrible (and it wasn't just him, it even sounded horrible when his teacher played it). As they get bigger, the sound gets better.

His school starts Orchestra at 4th grade - I emailed earlier this week thinking maybe we missed the handout on it while we were gone, but she says it is coming home this Friday. Last spring, we went to a meeting about beginning summer orchestra and they listened to DS play and said he would be bored with the summer program. They actually suggested he skip over the 4th grade orchestra and go straight to the "Intermediate Orchestra" with the 5th & 6th graders. DS hasn't decided yet if he wants to do that or just stay with his friends in the 4th grade group.

This was in the Sunday article of our Travel Section. I guess DCL will not be going down in price after this!!:lmao: :lmao: :lmao:

I finally got through sorting some more photos. Of the 250 I took at Los Veranos, I have it down to 70-some. I tried to get everyone as they came in on the final line (remember - I was an "observer"!) but the rain thwarted that goal. Some photos were useless since all you saw were rain. Some were missed as I tried to get a poncho over the camera. Some are just photos of people's chins which isn't all that interesting ;) So I got rid of the junk and cropped some of the ones that really needed it.

THere are 2 or 3 people from the 1pm group that I practiced on. I know GrandmaX3's DH is there, but the other folks I don't know if they are DISers or not :lmao:

I probably got about 60% of the 2pm group. Tom - There is a really good one of Mitch. Sadly, a LOT of them have the strap from the cable right in front of the face.

They are up on the smugmug site here: http://thepiratezone.smugmug.com/gallery/6003387_GHUdH

I'm almost obsessive of about this. :) All of my kids take an instrument (piano first for 2 yrs), then most take voice or some type of siniging class.....acting classes....dance classes..... we go to the symphony, plays (classics & modern shows), etc.....
They also all have taken quite a few years of Art classes at an Art School.
DH is so not interested in most of this stuff BUT, he doesn't let the kids know! LOL!

I took the clarinet in 4th grade. I wanted to take the flute BUT, by the time the got to me (my maiden name starts with a *w*) the band teacher said *No more flutes.* :rotfl2:
I am NOT musically inclined so, one year was more then enough! :lmao:

Pam TFS they came out really nice

Ok, I played an instrument in high school too.

I watched my friend join the band in HS in our sophmore year after teaching herself how to play the flute one summer. She made it look fun and easy so I decided to join too. The band instructor told her they needed flutes or clarinets and since I didn't want to totally copy her (plus I had a hard time getting a sound out of the flute) I chose the clarinet.

I took lessons that summer and started band in September of my junior year. It was much harder than I thought it would be, but the conductor was great, my private teacher was great and the concerts were a blast.

Now DS14 plays my clarinet that I bought with my babysitting money 25 years ago:lmao:

He is working his add off in marching band this year:rolleyes:
His football team's game was picked to be Fox's Game of the Week for tomorrow and they may show his marching band as well on tv:woohoo:

DH and I both played clarinet in jr high and high school. I love marching in half times and parades. It gave me such a thrill when people cheered for us! Of course the last time I played was at my HS graduation 28 years ago.
Alana plays Bass Clarinet and clarinet. Kathryn wants to play flute when she gets into middle school.

And I needed funny!

Good thing she isn't play The Victors, though.....we Ohio State fans have entirely different lyrics for that song....:rolleyes1

In regards to the instrument discussion.....Ds13 has been taking piano for about 5 years, and clarinet for 2. I was told (and I am only going on what I was told, as I do not play any instruments) that piano is a great instument to start with since you will learn to read 2 lines of music simultaneously (for left and right hands) and when you switch to an instrument that only requires one line of music, it is an easy switch. Vice versa can be a much harder transition. But again....I am certainly no expert.

Ds13 is very excited, as his 8th grade band will play at the HS game tomorrow night! I am so pleased he is involved with band......he has a great group of friends there.

Elvis really wants either guitar or drum lessons.... We'll see......

Fair warning to all parents, this all backfired on my parents as I wanted to major in music for college and they would not permit me (since they were paying). Here is my story I will share with everyone.

I am an only child. I come from the country in NE PA (Lake-Lehman was my HS) and I only had 130 in my graduating class in 1993. I probably had (have) ADD so we had an organ so at 6 my mom (who was a beautician) started trading hair styling for organ lessons with an older woman who was a church organist. I HATED to practice, I wanted to be outside playing (basketball, in the mud, helping dad with the car - yes I was a tom boy).

Well in 4th grade we got to sign up for elementary band - well conveniently I smash off my front right tooth and the dentist strongly urged my parents against any wind instruments (we did not have orchestra), so I by default was a percussionist (mallet only - as my mom's sister played the bells and I had a bell lyre already). I was my own section for 3 years.

Then in 7th grade you join the HS Band, well marching band was fun as I was in the "Pit" and I got to finally play other things like bass drum, cymbals, etc. Then concert season came and there are only so many percussion parts to go around and being low man on the totem I was bored. I tried to quit but mom would not let me (as the HS band director was the same that she had).

So I started playing Tenor Sax just for concert band season in 8th grade (still playing percussion for the marching band season the rest of my HS days) because the only person who played it was graduating. (See I should have had no concerns about going on this cruise by myself.) Then switched to Bari Sax for Jazz band, as someone moved to the school and played Tenor Sax and bought a clarinet at a garage sale and taught myself to play, so switched to playing Alto Clarinet in 9th grade for concert band because the person who played it graduated. Then switched to Piano my junior year for Jazz Band and Bassoon for concert band.

Not sure how my parents knew what instrument to take where, but it was a blast, I went to summer music camp 8-12 grade and played everything I was in a least 5 concerts a weekend and every other weekend at least 8. I also was our substitute organist at our church during HS. During college I did marching band, orchestra, and concert band for my general education requirements and also marched in drum corps. I still want to get a music degree, one of these years. I still play; I have a keyboard, drum sticks & pad, flute, clarinet and bassoon. I am dying to get my hands on a Selmer Mark 6 Tenor Sax.

So be careful as you can end up with a monster like me.

Both kids are learning to play the recorder in music class at school. This is standard for the 3rd - 5th grade there. They are having fun with it and it is somewhat tollerable while they are playing. I grew up playing the piano and DH played the trumpet [still has it] in MS and HS. He was in the marching band in HS. He was in the marching band at VT I think one year before his engineering degree kept him from continuing. I have a feeling that one or both of the kids will want to follow in their daddy's footsteps and march.
