Let me start by saying this was a hard vacations for a planner. The trip included my DH and GD (9) and GS (10) and this was our 5th cruise. I had everything planned at least 6 months before and half of it didn't happen but had a great time anyway. Our vacation started on 8/9 when we left for Captiva Island. Had 3 beautiful days there until the Island was evacuvated for Charley, where the hurricane made landfall, now remember when on vacation you either don't listen to news or make beleive you don't hear the bad stuff. People on the Island were in panic mode on Wednesday, but we just went to the beach and dared old Charley to come near us. But when people were boarding up and running around like crazy we knew it was time to pack. So we went to WDW, we will be safe there, after all Charley is suppose to hit Tampa. Got in to CSR and went swimming and to Down Town Disney. Got one day park tickets to Epcot and awoke on Friday morning to hear that Charley is going to hit and the parks will close early, no problem our tickes will be reactivated and can use again, free time in the park. The parks closed and we went back to our hotel, I tried to go out on town to buy soda, everything was either closed or out of soda, snacks, etc. Gas station lines were 10 cars long, now we live in the Northeast and this panic was more then I ever saw in a blizzard. Back to the resort with nothing. Kids were rammy in the room so we went to the arcade, no change in machines, not would be given at the gift shop, and customer service line was a mile long. Other resorts were evacuated and the remaining resorts were packed full. Ok, so parks closed, out on town closed, only food here? Well we were told to stay in our room after 7pm, the line was from the food court to main lobby. Ok, so I will grab sandwiches from the snack shop, it only took me and hour and a half to get 4 ham and cheese on hamburger buns, also ran out of bread and turkey. Charley hit around 8 and it was the most amazing weather conditions I ever saw. We were safe and Disney never lost power.
We left for the port at 9 the next morning to a lot of traffic and devestation everywhere, hotel signs, mobile homes, roofs and trees. It took us 3 hours to get to the port and arrive at Avis. We unload the luggage to wait for the shuttle. Here comes a storm, and there is our luggage in the pouring rain, had to use the drivers when we got on board. Anyone see a pattern starting to form here?
We got on to a ghost ship, had lunch signed kids into clubs, and put our luggage away by 3:00.
I really felt sorry for the people who were boarding at Key West at 7pm and for all the people who missed the ship.
Now everything is fine, we are on the ship and back on schedule. Wrong, on Monday morning the Captain announced we would not be going to GC, well there goes sting ray city. We would be arriving in Cozumel on Monday late afternoon and leaving at 5 on Tuesday, ok maybe we can get our dune buggy changed to Tuesday. Wait a minute, the ship is staying on regular time and Cozumel is an hour behind? Well ther goes the dune buggy tour ending at 4:30 which is 5:30 ship time, I think, by now I am so confused I had to go to guest services 3 times, DH and I didn't agree, but darn he was right. Ended up doing the snorkel trip with Disney so we don't miss the ship, let them worry about the time.
Ok, I read the navigator and it says Monday is casual, get your clothes on. Go into the hall and see someone in a suit, wait a minute what is the dress code tonight? Formal they say, run into the room, take your clothes off we are dressed wrong, everyone is ready dressed in our formal clothes. Don't know how I read the navigator wrong or which one I read, let me check this out. Everyone take there clothes off, its semi formal, I start laughing but DH doesn't see the humor.
Did a tour on our own in Nassau and when to a Flimingo show at a small garden and had a nice time, also did some shopping.
We had a great time on the ship, but very disappointed that we did not make GC, expecially since we got back and some have said GC would have been ok on Wednesday, but it's the captain's decision where we go, we all sign the aggrement. We do not like Nassau and would have really perfered a western port, since that is what we booked.
The food was great, loved Golden Mickey and the new Pirates dinner and deck party. Didn't do too may activities on board the kids were always at the clubs. But their highlite was winning the Mickey 200 race, this was their 4th try and finally won.
Home and everything is washed and put away. Wish somethings were different, but they always say a bad day on vacations is better then a good day at work, and there really were no bad days only confusing ones. Any questions just ask.

Sorry to hear about all the confusion. I am like you, plan down to the last detail. Very glad you all made the most out of your vacation. Did Disney give you any options for discounts on a future cruise? Not expected....Just wondering.

I, too, am an obsessive planner (aren't we all on the DIS???), and that would have driven me nuts, too.

What is it they say: "We make plans and God laughs..."

Thx for sharing your trip with us. Sounds like a crazy week!

This was our second DCL cruise; had done the 4 day last year. Could not wait to do the Western Caribbean! Charley had other plans!
To make a long story short: Arrived at Philly airport at 6 am on 8/14 only to find that Orlando was closed (after we had checked the flight at 5 am when we left home). The airport was a madhouse. Multiple phone calls ensued to Disney, US Air, The Travel Agent, and the trip insurance people, each of which took 20 minutes on hold because everyone in the free world was calling all of these numbers. At 11 am were told in no uncertain terms by the airline that we should all go home because there would be no flights to Florida that day. Finally, with the help of the other 24 people stranded at the airport and trying to get on the Magic and a great US Air agent, it was arranged for us to fly to Miami on 8/15 and be bussed to the ship in Key West. This was at 1:30 pm and we had not eaten because we couldnt get into the airport food court without a ticket!!
8 am Philly, 8/15. Airport is a bigger madhouse than Saturday. Flight takes off at 9:30 because of a "security breach in baggage claim". Guess that explained the 8x25 foot pile of luggage I saw.
Arrive in Miami, and guess what? No luggage!! Stand in line 2 hours to get that straightened out. No time for lunch. No food, again.
Get on the bus for the 4-hour long bus ride to the ship along with about 500 other people, many of whom had worse stories than I did. They gave us a box lunch (thank you Disney!) Got to the ship at 7 pm, checked in at 8:30, ate dinner and thankfully arrived back at our room to find our luggage. (Some people in the Philly group didn't get it till Thursday). Collapsed.
By now you've heard about the change in itinerary (no GC, yes Nassau). I don't fault Disney or the captain; I think they just did their best to keep us all safe. But I can't say that I wasn't disappointed. We have taken three cruises, the other two were 4-days to the Bahamas and I really had no desire to go back. So we missed Key West and GC and went to the Bahamas again.
That being said, I think they did the best they could do. It was a mess of a week and things seemed to be changing hourly (I too read the wrong Navigator and wore casual clothes to Formal Night). It took me until Tuesday to settle in and was pretty grumpy till then. However, we ultimately all had a wonderful time, once we finally got going. The staff was happy and not stressed-appearing, the shows were great, the food was better than I remember and I was happy that we were there. I do not, however, feel like I got the vacation that I planned on, and will have to do the WC at another time. (Not in August. Never again in August)
As for excursions, we did the Atlantis sub in Cozumel. I was initially uninterested in doing this but went since my husband really wanted to. It was amazing and I highly recommend going on it. (We did get caught in a thunderstorm in the open seas while on the tender to get to the sub. Not good.) The shopping in Cozumel was tough, with all of the merchants and taxi drivers and hair braiders haggling constantly.
And we made lemonade from lemons on Nassau, where the Blue Lagoon Island day trip is just wonderful. Fun and relaxing, great beach, really nice snorkeling off the beach, good lunch.
Disney gave us $100 ship credit and a bottle of champagne. I was a bit disappointed in this--thought a bigger credit or a discount for the future would be good.

As for August cruising, this was our 5th cruise in August and the 1st time we had any schedule changes or missed a port. We are 5 for 5 at CC also. We live in the Northeast and would really be more concerned about airport delays during late November thru March because of our winter weather. We also have cruised around the same dates and our first cruise in August had gone to the reduced rates because of prime time hurricane season. The next year the date was moved forward by 2 weeks into September. I know we had a mixed up time, but I really felt sorry for the people I saw boarding at Key West.

Thanks Markey!
We felt sorry for ourselves in Key West too! We were in the same clothes for 48 hours, with the possibility of having no new ones to change into, just had taken a 4 hour bus ride, missed our first port , stood in line for 1 1/2 hours on the ship (so much for Disney's wonderful expedited embarcation!), and just felt beat. Not the way to start a vacation, ideally. But like I said it all worked out. We had a ball and the kids had the time of their lives (8 and 11). I do, however, feel like I am still recovering!
