Will they let me wait in line with the taller kiddo even though I plan on sitting out with my younger son? Just don't want to send my 9 yr old alone in the queue! Any ideas? Going w/o dh this next trip!

I think what you are asking is can you and your younger son wait in line even if the younger cannot ride? They will not let in anyone who does not meet the height requirement. You cannot bring the younger son in the line just to wait.
If you want to wait with him and someone else will watch the younger one out of the line, yes you can go through then ask the CM to show you to the "chicken"exit.

Your DS9 will be allowed through the queue and on the ride by himself but obviously that is up to you if you would choose to let him. If he uses a FP, it only takes about 5 minutes (typically). I personally would not have a problem letting my DS8 ride by himself if the situation warranted....for example we have let him ride Everest through the single rider line quite a few times by himself (meaning DH and I didn't even go through the line with him). but I know not every parent is comfortable with that.

If you're in standby line, they'll certainly let you wait in line and then not ride when you get to the end. But the younger too-short one won't be allowed in line, so this will only work if you have another adult to wait with the younger one. (In which case, you might as well ride!)

If your son has a fastpass, no you won't be allowed in the line with him if you don't have a fastpass
