$75 down the drain!

No, they don't. If a room costs $77 per night plus tax, then that room costs $77 per night plus tax, whether 2 adults are in it or 1 adult and 1 child. If the child is age 3-9, they get a child ticket, and the adult would get an adult ticket....
I don't think there's a debate here. You're all saying basically the same thing...6 of 1, 1/2 dozen of the other.

If I'm not mistaken, in the hotel industry, room rates are always quoted based on double occupancy.

Any hotel I've ever gone to has an additional fee for each additional adult.

PS: You do get extra towels.

Take him off of the reservation. There is nothing easier than getting a new room key. I have gotton so many new room keys over the years I could paper a bathroom in plastic. ;) Keys do get "lost".

but the OP said:

I know I could call and take him off and save the money, but I'd rather just pay it and be ticked off ( privately) then worry about getting caught, and also about setting a bad example for the kids.

Some people chose to follow rules and pay what they're supposed to even if they don't agree with it.

Some people not only bend the rules but see the need to try to persuade others to do the same. I guess the behavior is acceptable if enough people do it.

I do not see a difference between a dependent 17 year old and a dependent 18 year old. They do not use anymore water, they use the same size towel and take up the same space. As long as a kid shows up on his parents' tax return he is still a kid. I don't think that I need to persuade anyone to bend the rules. Others can decide for themselves.

Your opinion is irrelevent. Hotels rooms are priced at double occupancy. Many hotels allow children under a certain age to stay for free. Many of the Vegas hotels charge for the third person in the room even if that person is an infant. Disney is very generous at 18.

Disney gets to set the rules. A guests option is to follow the rules, take your business elsewhere or cheat.

OP already said he'd rather pay the extra fee than set a bad example for his kids.

From your post I guess you would take a different, less honest, approach.

Try taking a 5th person to Disney and see how much more/night they charge. For our room, the per person cost for 4 people is $33.20 a night. The 5th person in the room costs $139.00 a night. How does a 5th person cost so much more then 4?

Not sure how you are figuring that increase. Are you moving up to a deluxe that sleeps 5 instead of a moderate or value that sleeps 4?

I would call back and find out why $75 difference, It should be $25 a night additional, plus tax.

Sounds like your staying in the AKL. The standard room only sleeps 4. The deluxe rooms are larger and are more expensive. You're not paying 140 for the 5th person rather your paying extra for a larger room or possible a suite.

I am not about to tell you what to do, it is truly your choice, what you personally feel comfortable doing,

....but, working at the front desk of the Dolphin years ago, there were many times that honest people would tell me at check in that there was an additional adult in the room, and expect me to charge them additional $$. For me it was my choice if I wanted to charge them or not. Technically, yes I should have charged them. But if they seemed like nice people, who were nice to me, I told them not to worry about it, and made an additional key for that person.

However, if they were grumpy to me, expected an EPCOT view room with double balconies on a Florida Resident rate, when they lived in NY, you better believe I charged them for the additional person they tried to "sneak" by me.

I can't speak about Disney front desks, but at the Dolphin many times I made the decision at my own discretion!! :goodvibes

Remember to be nice to the front desk cast members! It usually pays off in your favor!

That advice has served me well no matter where I have gone. I have gotton wonderful upgrades, one night free, complimentary breakfast, etc. It serves one well to always be nice. That said; would you really notice the difference between a 17 year old and an 18 plus a day year old? ;) And, how many teens hang around the front desk while their parents are checking in? None that I know of.

Yes, the rooms are slightly larger (37 square feet to be exact) for the deluxe rooms and they do have a day bed, but is it really worth $139/night for that little bit more, not really. I figured my per night cost based on what a savannah view would cost us with the email code rate I got, $166.00/night/4 people. The difference between the deluxe savannah view and the regular savannah view is $139/night ($305/night total). One person doesn't add that much more to the overall operational costs at the resort. Yes, Disney makes the rules, including, I am convinced, the so called "fire codes" for the area to make money. That is their right, we are still going, still paying for the extra person. I am just posting this to put in perspective for the OP that she is getting off CHEAP!

My teens were always standing right beside me when I checked in.

That's nice. Mine usually go to the arcade or off to get a snack. I don't really have a concern that they will get lost.

If we took two rooms at a mod or value, our costs/night double for that 5th person vs being able to pay like you can for an extra adult and have a roll away in a mod or value for $25/night.

I wasn't concerned they were going to get lost. They were interested in hearing what the CM had to say. They also wanted to know where our room was going to be.

Disney made the standard rooms at WL and AKL smaller so they would be more affordable. The deluxe rooms are larger and are priced closer to the other deluxe resorts.

You're not really paying that much for the extra person so much as you're (over) paying for the larger room. The difference is magnified since the discount seems to be a flat dollar amount so the increased price isn't discounted. In previous years Disney offered a % discount so guests reserving upgraded rooms got a better discount. Sounds like 2 standard view rooms wouldn't have cost that much more than one deluxe room.

Famlies with more than 4 guests can get better deals in DTD hotels, off site suite and condo hotels.

I agree with you on the "fire codes". These are really economic codes. Hawaii is famous for them. They limit four persons in a room, even a one bedroom condo, despite the square footage. We stayed at an "unnamed" resort on Ka'anapali. We were limited to four per room but there were five of us. I called the manager of the resort and said, "I would really like to stay with you for a week but I will not get two rooms. Will you give us a complimentary roll away for the five of us"? He was quite willing to do that. I have had a similar experience over the years at WDW while staying in the deluxe hotels. It is then hard to take "the rules" seriously with regard to being a few days over 18, when the staff doesn't take them nearly as seriously as the guests.

The rack rate for our deluxe savannah view with tax, which is what the other figures I posted is $427.35. We are still getting a great discount on the room and we were able to use our email code for a package with discounted room, park hopper tickets with the plus option and the MYW dining, so overall we are saving about $1200 with that email code, which is great. Like I said before I was just putting this into perspective for the OP. It is still a lot of extra money to charge for a room that in reality is only 3 feet longer and occupies one more person.
