I should warn you folks, this is going to be a long one!!!

Wow, what a trip. This was our last of 4 trips within 12 months, so we decided to go with the deluxe plan to try all the wonderful restaurants we hadn’t tried yet. We had also just returned from a cruise to the Caribbean the week before, so we really had put on the pounds from this two week trip!

I won’t waste anymore time on small talk cause I am sure you all want to read the reviews. I will say that the week was great because although the weather was uncharacteristically cold, it wasn’t too bad (but we did cab it 3 nights after dinner so as to not wait for the busses in the cold.) I will tell you though that we are DINKs with annual passes and the Disney Dining experience, so I will compare the regular price as well as the DDE price to get a true view as to whether or not the DXDP was worth it for us.

Day 1 – not on the dining plan since we arrived on the 15th and our plan started on the 16th. We arrived fairly early around 2:30ish and decided to have a pizza on the Boardwalk. Since the pizza was only $2 more to get the full pie vs 3 slices, this seemed like a smart move. We were so hungry however, that we ate nearly the entire pie between two of us. It was pretty good. Cost about $20 and change with a soda. Since we ate around 3 pm, we were really not that hungry around 7ish so we went over to the Polynesian to try some Sushi. The lump crab cake roll is so unique and tastes wonderful. We actually had it for the first time as an appetizer at the Kona Café last month, and loved it, so we made it our meal this time. Very reasonably priced, although can’t recall exactly what we spent. Maybe $70 including tip, an adult fufu drink, a couple of beers for hubby and dessert for both of us.

Day 2- Tutto Italia and Flying Fish café
We went to Epcot on this day after checking into OKW since we had to get our new keycards with the dining plan on them. We tried Tutto Italia for lunch and were quite surprised at how expensive it was even for lunch. I can tell you, if we weren’t on the plan, you would not catch us in there for anything but dessert. I had the proscuitto and melon appetizer which was very good and DH had the Eggplant Napolean which was very similar to eggplant parmesan just not deep fried. He enjoyed the eggplant and what little I got of it was very good as well. Our entrees however, left a lot to be desired. He got the pasta with Sausage and I got the lasagna. DH was disappointed with his because he thought he was going to get the sausage as two pieces off the side or something instead of crumbled in the pasta, although he said the flavor was ok, just didn’t feel the value was there for pasta. My lasagna was huge, although a little bland. I ate maybe a qtr of it. Dessert on the other hand was fantastic. DH had the profiteroles which he couldn’t say enough about all week. I had the chocolate hazelnut tart. YUMMO! Loved it but very rich.

Personal rating out of 10 – 7.5, although a 9.5 for desserts and apps

Our next meal on this day was for Flying Fish Café. We arrived a little before our time and were seated promptly. Ambiance was lovely in this restaurant. For apps we both got the crab cake which was massive. I was nearly finished with mine when the waiter decided to come and take both of our plates. DH asked if I was finished, and I wasn’t so he was a little upset I didn’t say something. Truthfully if I had eaten any more, I would have burst later, but not the point. For Dinner, I ended up with the scallops and they were amazing. Now that I think back on it, I think DH got the scallops too, but cannot recall for certain. There were 3 very large scallops on the plate and some sort of risotto. I stuck to the 3 scallops and still only got through 2 of them. DH I believe cleaned his plate. Dessert here was good. I got the trio of sorbets since I was so full, and my favorite was the ginger one. There was also a cranberry one and pear. Can’t recall what DH got, but he enjoyed it. And I have to say, I really liked the fact that they had dessert wine flights here. Although, I made a mistake and ordered the dessert wine flight instead of the ice wine flight like I had intended. The wines were tasty, but would have definitely enjoyed the ice wines more.

Day 3- Liberty tree tavern and Artist point
The last time we had enjoyed lunch at Liberty Tree was back in 2000 on Christmas day. I must say this time was much better, not that it was bad the last time. For the starter, DH had the chili which was a massive bowl that he really enjoyed, and I had the Fried Cheese. I didn’t realize that it was going to be 2 different types of cheeses. 1 was a white cheddar and the other the standard mozzarella. I thought this was a nice touch, even though there was entirely too much for one person to eat. For our entrée I went with the pot roast and was pleasantly surprised. It seemed to be seasoned just perfectly and had a bunch of mashed potatoes to soak up the really yummy sauce. It fell apart on the plate. It was very good. DH had the mushroom cheeseburger and liked it very much. For desserts, we had the apple caramel tart which was good, but too much for DH to handle and the Ooey gooey Toffee Cake which I have to highly recommend. Was one of my favorite desserts of the trip. Was kind of like a warm choc chip cookie bar with toffee pieces and ice cream. Very good. Enjoy LTT very much.

Artist point was our next culinary stop and this was another we had tried on our trip in 2000, although, back then we were not thrilled with this restaurant. We decided to give it another go since we were dining deluxe and have heard such great things about it. This trip was much better than the last. We had heard so many good things about the Smoky Portobello soup that we didn’t even look at anything else on the menu for apps. We both got this and it was FANTASTIC!!! DH ate his entire bowl, but I left about ¾ of mine since it was very filling. I also should mention that there was a drink I wanted to order called the candy cane martini. I had gotten it last year around the holidays and I was hoping they could make it, but knew it needed specific ingredients (I believe it was candy cane schnapps or something). They didn’t have it but they did try to make me something else similar. Even though they when I tried it, it was nothing like the martini (more like mouthwash) they didn’t charge me for the drink. I was very impressed! For our meals, DH got the buffalo short rib and I got the strip steak. DH really enjoyed his short rib and I enjoyed my strip. The mushroom butter was a nice touch. For dessert, DH got the cobbler and really enjoyed it. I do not recall what I got and I do not see it on the menu online, so can’t remember. I thought it was something chocolatey but do not remember. This trip definitely got a thumbs up from us this time.

Day 4- Nine dragons and Yachtsman’s Steakhouse
Today were supposed to go to Coral Reef for lunch, even sat and waited to be seated, but when we looked at the menu, we were not impressed at all, so we left even before the waiter had gotten there. We figured we have actually been in that tank twice, so wasn’t a big deal to sit there and look at it eating food we were not interested in. So, we tried to get into Le Cellier but to no avail, but they did check to see what was available, and they mentioned Nine Dragons. We had mentioned this was one of the places we wouldn’t mind going, so we decided on them. We were very impressed with this place and really enjoyed our meals. DH had the Beef Cong you Bing for an app and I had the shimp and chicken egg rolls. Both apps were very good, although the server told us it would take 20 mins for the Beef to come out. It didn’t take nearly that long, thankfully. For our meals, I went with the Honey chicken which was really tasty. DH had the fried rice which I thought was odd because it had ham in it instead of pork. Just a different flavor. I liked the honey chicken much better than the fried rice, but he really enjoyed the fried rice. For dessert we tried the ginger cake which was really good. Very strong ginger flavor which I happen to like, and we also tried the Rice pudding. This comes in a massive bowl and it almost looks like chocolate because of the dark brown coloration, but it doesn’t taste anything like chocolate. The rice has a different texture and I was not fond of it at all. If you do happen to get it and actually like it, you will have a lot to enjoy.

Our dinner for the evening was at Yachtsman’s steakhouse. This was our first time every trying this place because we always felt it was a little too expensive for our tastes, but this time because we are on the deluxe dining plan, we decided to splurge! Boy am I glad we did! We really enjoyed this place very much. We again were seated promptly with no problems. For our appetizers I got the scallops which were so perfectly tender bites, and I really enjoyed them. I believe DH got the same thing, but do not recall, probably because I was so wrapped up in mine! For our meals our server recommended the strip steak cooked with the peppercorn sauce and potato gratin. Even though he recommended that steak, I thought the Australian Wagyu was an interesting choice. Basically it is also a strip loin but it is the Australian version of Kobe steak. After that description and being on the dining plan, how could I not try it? DH went with the recommended strip steak and loved the preparation of it. I tried it and was happy that I selected the Wagyu. Not that it wasn’t good, I just preferred my steak to his. The wagyu was absolutely incredible, probably the best steak I have ever had! It was as tender as a filet mignon, but had such incredible flavor. I told DH he has to be careful now that I have such expensive taste. I believe I had the crème brulee for dessert and dh had the trio of sorbets. The meal itself was so good, I forgot what I ordered for dessert!

Day 5 – Turf Club and Jiko
Well, Day 5 of our Disney trip ended up being the coldest day of the week, so we decided instead of going to animal kingdom we were going to wander around Downtown Disney and get our shopping out of the way. On the way back from shopping we stopped into the Turf club at SSR and ate lunch there. We ate here twice on our last trip and decided to squeeze it in instead of Wolfgang puck café. Our absolute favorite appetizer there is the Tomato and Goat cheese bisque. It is served as a really smooth tomato bisque with a scoop of herbed goat cheese in the middle. You mix it up and use the many pieces of toast to dip into it. It is absolutely amazing! Our favorite part of the meal by far. DH had a burger or reuben and said it was really good, and I had the ribeye sandwich which I ate only the rib eye of. Surprisingly enough, even though the steak was incredibly thin, it was still cooked perfectly to Medium Rare. I was very impressed. Being too full to eat our desserts there, we got them to go, and I got the Chocolate Volcano cake which I absolutely love. DH got the mixed berries which is exactly how it sounded, but he never ate them.

Jiko was our next option, and I have to admit, I was a little nervous going there even though I have heard nothing but good things about this place. We decided to look over the menu to make sure we did not have another Coral reef moment, and we decided that there was something on there that we both could enjoy. We had to wait a couple of minutes, but not a big deal. I decided to be daring (for me anyway) and I tried the Ostrich filet for my appetizer. It was served with a fruity vinaigrette and creamed sweet potatoes, and boy was this good! I forgot what DH got, but he really enjoyed his app too. For our meals, I had heard so much about the filet, I decided to get that medium rare, and DH got the short rib. OH -- MY – GOD!!! My filet was absolutely incredible! Cooked absolutely perfectly, and even had a nice smoky taste from the oak grill. The mac and cheese that was with it was very good too. The wine sauce they had with it was the perfect compliment. DH couldn’t say enough about his short rib either! He said he wanted to get another short rib as his dessert, but alas, they wouldn’t let him. For dessert I tried the Pistachio crème brulee and it was just perfectly creamy and crunchy all at the same time. DH tried the passion fruit panna cotta and enjoyed it, but liked my crème brulee better. I don’t think he was expecting the texture he got from the panna cotta. It was more like a dry flan. Still, 2 thumbs up, and our new favorite restaurant in this price range. (Our overall favorite is still Boma.)

Day 6 – Mamma Melrose and Narcoosee’s
We originally weren’t planning on being in Hollywood Studios on this particular day, but since we heard they opened up Toy Story Midway Mania, we decided to go there just to play on this ride a couple of times. We also hit Voyage of the little Mermaid, and the Muppet show because these are favorites of ours too. So we cancelled our plans for the Animal Kingdom and Yak and Yeti for today and went with Mamma Melrose since this was one of the two restaurants we hadn’t tried yet. I had a nice salad for my appetizer, which was just a basic salad which was fine as I was starting to feel overfull every day from the plan. Dh had the minestrone which he thought was good. We both went with the Chicken Parmesan. I thought the chicken on it was pretty good and a decent size, but the pasta tasted funny to me so I didn’t eat too much of it. DH thought it was just ok. For desserts we had the warm chocolate truffle cake and the honey ricotta cheesecake. I have to say both were very good, but we preferred the outside of the cheesecake to the inside 

Our next meal was at Narcoosee’s. We arrived a little early for our meal, but apparently this place is pretty popular so we ended up waiting a little while to be seated. Not a big deal, we sat at the bar and had a nice conversation with a bar trainee. She gave us a nice little tip about Le Cellier that I am not sure I want to share because I want to be able to use the tip myself!  By the way, I should mention that our reservation was for 7:30pm but we didn’t get sat til almost 8:00- this worked out very well because the special holiday Wishes fireworks were at 9:30pm! We were finally told our table was ready, and they started walking us down and I saw a window table set for 2, I was thinking how incredibly lucky we were! Then they told us that our table was the other direction and tried giving us one that was way over on the other side with no view whatsoever! I asked nicely if we could have the one by the window and they let us have it! I mentioned to my DH later that it would have been an incredible let down if they didn’t let us have it after showing it to us and getting our hopes up!  We were very pleased with our table and the view of the MK was great! We really lucked out. For apps we decided on the crispy duck rolls and the Prince Edward Island Mussels. Both were absolutely amazing. Really enjoyed them. Our server appeared to bring out everything very slowly, which we had absolutely no problem with because we were trying to stretch it out to make it to 9:30 to see wishes. And of course we also saw the electric water parade too! Since we were on the dining plan and weren’t concerned about cost, we both went with lobster as our meals, especially after she told us they were 2lb lobsters! Oh my! The lobsters were very good, although DH thought his was a little underdone. Mine was cooked perfectly and I even enjoyed the claws which I normally don’t care for. They came with a side of some sort of gratin potatoes. The meal was delicious and the view incredible. For dessert, I had heard so much about the special Almond Cheesecake that I had to give it a go! That dessert was amazing, I really enjoyed it. It was served with some cherries on the side and some sort of caramel type cookie. DH had the warm apple tart with cinnamon ice cream. He pretty much likes anything with apples, and really enjoyed this one. He said the ice cream was a nice touch. Shortly after we received our desserts the entertainment started and we were able to see Wishes right from the window. It was a really nice meal altogether.

Day 7- Chefs de France and California Grill
Today we were back in Epcot to finish up a few remaining rides, and decided to try Chefs de France. Back a lot of years ago, my sister and I tried this restaurant and thought the service was terrible. Basically got stopped in the middle of the restaurant on the way back from the restroom to be told my card wasn’t working. I don’t get embarrased, but that pissed me off. This was at the beginning of the year when they started a new dining plan and they hadn’t gotten all the kinks worked out yet, but to stop me like they did was completely uncalled for. Anyway, I refused to go back until this time when DH really wanted to try it. Well, the service was better this time, but the food wasn’t. We both started off with soups, DH with the French onion and me with the lobster bisque. He said his tasted like Campbells with cheese on it, so he was disappointed, and my lobster bisque didn’t have a single piece of lobster in it, although it tasted good. DH for his entrée ordered the Croque Misouer (sp?) which is basically a grilled ham and cheese sandwich. I thought it tasted good, but it disappointed DH. I ordered the Mac and Cheese which I thought was going to be awesome, again, disappointed. Surprisingly it needed a lot of salt, and had very little flavor even though they used Gruyere cheese. The desserts thankfully were better than the rest of the meal. DH had the profiteroles and said they were good, although Tutto Italia’s were better. I had the chocolate milk mousse cake and it was so yummy I ate the whole thing. It was served with a coconut ice cream and some flambéed bananas. I am not a big banana fan so I left those to the side, but it was a yummy dish anyway. Not sure if we would ever return to this place because we just didn’t feel it met our expectations at all.

Our next meal that day was at the California grill. Our reservation was at 7:50pm and we were a little concerned whether or not we were going to make it on time since we were doing Dive quest that afternoon. We found out that if we skip the video presentation after the dive you basically save 30 mins so we really had no trouble at all making our reservation. However, when we arrived at 7:35pm they told us it was going to be about 20 mins past our reservation time that we would get a table. Disappointing, but ok. Wasn’t a big deal here either because if we got a decent window seat then we could see the fireworks. Well, come to find out you really don’t need reservations if you are willing to wait for a lounge area table. One actually came up with a really good view of the MK perfect for 2 people, so we took it and cancelled our reservation. The seats were much more comfortable anyway. We felt that this would actually be a great place to come for sushi since it had a nice selection. DH actually got one of the rolls for his appetizer, and loved it. It had some sort of spicy mayo with scallops in it he couldn’t say enough about. He really enjoyed it. Although, he did say to make sure you have a full drink when you start eating it. I actually started off with the cheese plate since I wasn’t overly hungry. It had 5 different cheeses on it, and I found all but the goat cheese really good. It also came with fig bread, raisins, candied almonds, fig, and honeycomb to go with it. I really enjoyed this selection, although the large chunk of blue cheese was a little too much since it is such a strong cheese. For our meals, DH went with the filet, and I went with the duck. His filet was cooked perfectly at Medium rare, and he thought it was just ok. He wasn’t overly impressed, especially since he had a wonderful strip at the Yachtsman’s steakhouse just a couple of nights prior. My duck on the other hand was very dried out, so I requested to get another dish. I requested the Filet as well, but looking back, I should have ordered a fish dish as they are usually lighter. Surprisingly it came out very quickly. It was cooked perfectly at Medium rare and was just ok in my book as well, but by that point I was definitely a little more hungry. DH for dessert had the butterscotch crème brulee and really enjoyed it. For the life of me, I cannot recall what I had, but for some reason sorbets are coming to mind. Desserts were good as usual. Funny how we didn’t seem to have any issues with the desserts on this trip 

Day 8 – Yak and Yeti and Jiko again
We finally are on our last day, and I think by this point we started waddling around the park from all the food we ate. We made it to Animal Kingdom on the last full day and we decided this was probably a mistake since it is our favorite park. Turned out to not be as much of a problem as we thought it might be. We were able to snag reservation for 12noon for Yak and Yeti, and I have been wanting to try this place since it opened up. We got there a little early and were sat right at noon. I really liked the selections on the menu as there were a lot of things we could try. I got the lettuce cups for my app and decided there was entirely too much food in this for one person, especially as an app. DH got the wonton soup and said it was very good as the wontons were very tasty. DH has a couple of major favorites that if he sees them on the menu, he will normally order them. One of these is short ribs, as you have seen from the previous posts, he ordered twice, and the other is BBQ ribs. Since BBQ ribs were on the menu, he selected those. They were not exactly fall off the bone like the ones he makes at home, but he enjoyed them very much. I tried them, but I am not a rib fan, so just seemed ok to me. I had the Maple Tamarind chicken and I really enjoyed it. It had a great flavor and was very juicy. DH tried it, but it wasn’t his kinda dish. For dessert, I had heard a lot of goof things about the mango pie so decided I had to try it. It was just as good as everyone had said. I can even picture if it was a warmer day, this would have been the perfect end to the meal since it is a frozen pie. DH had the fried wontons and enjoyed them more than he thought he would. He wanted the brownie sundae for two, but I wasn’t up for it. I was going to cave in and let him get it, but he wouldn’t let me. All in all, very good meal and would definitely visit again.

Our last meal for the week was originally planned to be at Cinderella’s Royal Table, but we decided that we enjoyed our meal at Jiko so much that we decided to cancel CRT and reschedule at Jiko. The only reservation time we could get was at 9:10pm, but this was ok because we decided that we had to pack so it wasn’t a big deal. We actually arrived at 8:00pm and figured that there was no way we were going to get in early, so I sent DH up to the bar to get drinks. Well, lo and behold, they were able to get us in! I ran up to the bar to get DH and straight to the table we went. They thought it was great that we cancelled CRT for Jiko! I decided that I liked my meal so much the last time I was going to get the exact same things from start to finish! So I had the Ostrich appetizer which was even better this time than the last, the filet which again was cooked just perfectly, and the pistachio crème brulee which was just melt in your mouth yummy. DH decided that he wanted to try some new things. He figured since there are so many flatbreads on the menus that he figure he would try the chef’s selection flatbread which had artichokes and other veggies. He said it was very good and ate the whole thing. Of course, he had the short rib again and he said it was just as good as the first time! For Dessert he tried the Pistachio crème brulee and enjoyed that as well. The food here was just as amazing as the first time we ate here just days ago, but the service was really lacking. Our server had been sat with an 8 top and he decided he was going to get a larger tip over there so he spent more time with them than with us, more so than necessary. I upset my husband by only leaving a 15% tip but I felt that with the service we received, it was generous. DH feels that servers do not make enough and usually 20% is the low end he will give, even for bad service. I wanted to make a point so left only 15%. Granted, this wasn’t nearly as bad as the situation we saw at the California grill. I will explain this in another thread because I was very disappointed in it. All in all, minus the service, this place is still our new favorite!!!

Overall we enjoyed the majority of the restaurants with the dining plan, and we got to try some we probably wouldn’t normally try due to their price point. There are a couple we probably won’t go to again, but for the most part we really enjoyed our choices. We felt that we would probably get the regular dining plan in the future, and make some of our meals in the room, and go to a couple of the signature places again.

We did use up all our snack credits, even though we kinda cheated on that one. We used a couple here and there for waters, sodas, an ice cream or two, and a couple of schoolbreads (which by the way they have changed!!! They made them smaller and changed the icing to a caramel icing. Not bad, just not the same.) So by the last day we still had 15 snack credits to use! We went over to Goofy’s and got 14 special cookies, and 1 set of pretzel rods, which are just my absolute favorite treat there! Although, I do like the apples, they are just not able to use a snack credit on them. We brought the cookies home in one of our bags and plan to use them for Thanksgiving dessert! 

So the total price of the plan for the two of us was $979.86. The total that we would have spent if we counted all snack credits and meals was $1563.10 if we did not have the DDE card. If we had the DDE card the cost would have been $1284.37, this is still a savings of $304.51!!! Granted we still had to pay gratuity which ended up at $285.32 and all of our adult beverages, but still, I think we did pretty darn well. For those of you who think the plan isn’t worth it, if you use it correctly, it totally is! Although, I will agree with those folks who say it is entirely too much food. I feel like if we were really smart we would have used the snack credits for breakfast in the mornings instead of getting food, but we were not that smart! We will know better if we decide to try the deluxe plan again. I really like the eating vacations, so if we budget better, we might try this again. Although, DH is telling me we don’t normally eat this way, so he was thinking not doing it again. It was fun for this time I guess. 

Any questions, let me know!

Great reviews! Thanks for sharing! :goodvibes

Jiko is our favorite WDW restaurant and the filet and pistachio creme brulee is my favorite meal there.

Great reviews! JIKO is one of our faves, I had the short rib and it is unbelievable!:thumbsup2 We also tried Yachtsman & Narcoossee's this last trip and we were very pleased with both.:goodvibes

So what was the great tip the bartender at Narcoossee's gave you about Le Cellier?! C'mon, we're all friends here. This is the Restaurants Board, after all. If you can't tell us, then who? ;)

The bartender informed us to go on a rainy day as they tend to have a lot of cancellations, but not to call because they would still tell you that they are full.

Great review, so what happened at the California Grill?

I don't understand why you need to use your DDE discount on the days when you were on the DDP. Did I miss anything?

I don't understand why you need to use your DDE discount on the days when you were on the DDP. Did I miss anything?

We use it on our alcoholic beverages that aren't included in the plan. We also wanted to see if the plan was still worth it with us having the DDE so I evaluated both ways.
