Day#5 The only way to host a party.
Your crew: Denise, 40 something, compulsive trip planner, member of the DIS boards. Andy also 40 something middle school administrator coming off a challenging year. Chelsea, 17, high school senior, is getting an early graduation present by cruising, also a member of the DIS board. Taylor, 14 high school sophomore. Hope 11 just starting into middle school.
Another morning and I am up early to head for the spa. Today as I cycle I am conflicted. This is a sea day, I should be relaxing, but this is also the day of the DIS board brunch. Eight people Ive talked to for months on the computer, but not all that much in real life. What if they hate each other, what if they hate the food, what if they put us at a bunch of small tables, kinda defeats the purpose of a get together? This was my idea if it flops Ill feel responsible.
I console myself with the fact I have 12:30 Churka Capsule and a 2:30 Surial bath appointments. So if it is a disaster I can distress right away. I meet Andy for morning tea. What a joy to spend time alone with him while both of us are relaxed. I head down to change while he heads to the shopping talk. His plan was to bail out of the shopping talk and head to the Art of Entertaining, but he decides to stay so he wont be late to your party thing
The shopping talk was good. We snatch a color-changing visor and get a card with a CV inside. You take the card to the store in Cozumel, one in every 500 is a real diamond. It ends very close to 10:30, we have to hoof it to Palo quick.
When we arrive at Palo, everyone is already gathered at the entrance. John and Shelly, Wendy and Doreen, Sandy and Judy as well as Amy and Jessie. We have all met briefly at the sail away party, but this will be a first chance to really get to know each other. Maurizio the oh so Italian manager leads the party in. If you want to see heads turn try a party of ten at Palo. Now the answer to the big question, I had tried and tried and tried to pre-reserve the back room at Palo for this brunch without success. So where were they going to put us? In the back room! Wendy, Amy, Shelly and Sandy who knew of my trials all started laughing. Everyone else including our waitress Janine and Maurizio were confused. We explained to them that we werent one big family as they supposed, we just acted like one. I saved the explanation of why we were so tickled until after they left. No need of risking a chance of offending and possibly making it harder for DIS ers who will come after us.
After a toast to our new friendship we were divided up into two groups to tour the brunch set up. It was lovely, so many goodies and then there were the entrees. Wow breakfast or lunch food about four different entrees of each type. The waitress was so attentive, she heard several of us deciding to split a sweet pizza, so she brought extra just in case.
Around 11:00 it occurs to me. I am never going to make that 12:30 appt. I called the spa to see if I could reschedule. It was no problem, they even had someone to take my spot. Now I could really relax and enjoy the good food and the even better company. It is Wendys birthday and the staff brings out a cake . Thank goodness its light, we were all stuffed by then.
Around 1PM the party breaks up. We head back to the room to find Hope has ordered room service. She was not excited about what was happening at the Lab so we decide to line up for the Mickey 200. This consist of a family challenge where you get a potato a carrot some toothpicks, four nails and four wheels. You have to create a racer that will ride along a set track. You have to use both veggies. We decide on a carrot car with potato decorations. Unfortunately our wheels were not space properly and we go down to defeat in the first heat.
We leave Hope to see if our design wins prettiest car (it didnt) and we head to the spa. We get there to find out our appointment has been changed to 3:00. OK, maybe I shouldnt have ignored that blinking light for the 30 seconds I was in the cabin. At 3:30 with no sign of anyone I troop out to the desk in my oversized robe to find out what was going on. The spa does guest recovery by offering a day pass to the rainforest for Andy and we are assured we will get our full hour in the surial. Only problem, the AAA member reception is from 4-5.
The surial chamber is really for those with a sense of humor. Finger painting your spouse with mud and coconut is almost as funny as looking at yourself covered in mud and coconut. After steaming they are a whole line of products to try for showering, massage and general pampering. Its like being let loose in moms cosmetics when you were a little girl. This is our fourth cruise and our fourth time in the chamber, this really doesnt get old for us.
We make a brief appearance at the AAA reception, free rum punch is always a good thing. Andy runs into Dan Riley, tonights comic and acting on orders from a shop keeper in Key West proceeded to give him a hard time. Dan took it well and told Andy to meet him in the bar around 10:00.
At this point I am up for some serious relaxation. I take a book and head up to deck 10 to while a way a few hours. Unfortunately I lose all track of time and have to hustle to get into formal wear in time for dinner.
Dinner is in Luminers tonight. We celebrate Wendys birthday with cake and Austi (thanks Wendy). I think I have enough time to get out of the formal wear and grab the camera before hitting the Dan Riley show. Thank goodness the DIS group has a table in the club with a seat for me. I keep wondering if Andy made his appointment with Dan, the show has started so I couldnt really ask. Dans last trick is done with five guys, a women and a deck of cards, sure enough Andy is called up to the stage. Now, if you think you are going to hear how the trick is done, sorry, some things are kept between husband and wife. But for the rest of the cruise total strangers would yell my husbands name and ask how it was done. When we ran into Dan and told him what had been happening, he laughed and said Thats what Andy gets for giving me a hard time.
Seems the night was just beginning. At 12:01 was the premier at Sea for Pirates of the Caribbean. Andy, Hope, and I walked into the Disney Theater not expecting it to be nearly as crowded as it was. Again we sat with a row of DISers . We also saw Chelsea and Taylor in the theater a few rows up sitting with a bunch of new friends. The projectionist were dressed as pirates and the whole thing was well done with the exception of the pre-movie entertainment which consisted of putting a camera out in the lobby to film people coming in. This was way too much temptation for a number of young males who proceeded to behave like badly supervised young males. It was refreshing to see one Mom find her child, call him over and proceed to let him know in no uncertain terms she was not pleased. Poor Andy was in full vice principle mode, he really, really wanted to say something to the kids but restrained himself after I reminded him this was not his school.
It was after 2:00 when we finally made it to bed.
