5/7 continued Trying an Old Favorite and Some New Stuff, Too
One of our favorite places for a quick lunch at Disney Springs has always been Earl of Sandwich. We’d been so busy trying new places though that we actually hadn’t dined there since April of 2022. We agreed it was time to get an old favorite, the Holiday Turkey Sandwich: Turkey, cornbread stuffing, gravy, cranberry sauce & mayonnaise
This is how our sandwich looked upon unwrapping. It was a soggy mess with very little turkey or stuffing. We were both very disappointed. It was nothing like we remembered. It wasn’t good.
We also shared the Cuban Sandwich: Tender carnitas, ham, Swiss, pickles & Cuban mustard sauce
This was better than the Holiday Turkey sandwich but nothing special. We both agreed the Cuban from the Centertown Market at CBR was better actually. That one seemed to have more flavor, better bread, and better meat.
On top of the sandwiches not being as good, we always used to get a combo meal with delicious potato wedges. See photo from April 2022 as proof:
The sandwich looks a lot better in that photo too!
The combo meals now offer a choice of only potato chips or a cookie. The potato wedges are no longer even on the menu at all. We chose the cookie, thinking we could get one of the delicious looking cookies they had on display but we found out that we could only get a pre-packaged chocolate chip or sugar cookie. We opted for chocolate chip, of course.
Here is our sad chocolate chip cookie as part of our combo meal:
This tasted exactly as you would expect a pre-packaged chocolate chip cookie from a vending machine to taste. The cookie, sadly though, was the best part of our meal. We gave the cookie a C+. Overall our Earl of Sandwich meal only garnered a C. I think it will be a very long time before we give Earl of Sandwich another try. There are too many other great places to eat at Disney Springs.
After lunch, we walked around Disney Springs and checked the line at Gideon’s. Surprisingly this whole trip there never seemed to be much of a line at all. We never saw the line long enough to warrant a virtual queue. I don’t know if Summerhouse on the Lake’s Cookie Bar has lessened the demand or maybe people just aren’t as willing to wait in a huge line for cookies as they used to be. (Looking back on this trip, it’s hard to believe that we were 16 days into our trip before we ordered something from Gideon’s.) Since there was a minimal wait we picked up a slice of the Chocolate Churro Cake to save for dessert after dinner, a bag of banana chip cookie bites, and also a Pistachio Toffee Chocolate Chip cookie. Of all the “everyday” offerings of Gideon’s cookies, this is the only flavor we hadn’t tried yet.
After securing our treats for later we headed back to the hotel for laundry day. We had packed enough clothing to only have to do laundry one time and this was unfortunately the day. As we waited for our laundry, we heated up the Pistachio Toffee Chocolate Chip Cookie in our microwave.
Well, folks, we have a new winner! Wow! We couldn’t believe how delicious this cookie was! We had avoided this one because we weren’t sure we would like pistachios in our cookies. This was not only the best Gideon’s cookie we’ve tried but it rocketed its way to the number one spot on our cookie stroll, just slightly edging out the Riviera Cookie. A+!
After our laundry finished we made our way to the Animal Kingdom Lodge for another quick service dinner. We wandered around aimlessly trying to find the entrance to the Mara. Despite having eaten there as recently as December we still had trouble finding the restaurant. I’m not sure I could find it again if we went tomorrow. We did eventually find our way there and decided to share the Harissa-Spiced Beef Bowl: Braised Beef Stew, Pilau Rice, Kale Slaw, Cucumber-Tomato Salad, and Avocado Tahini Sauce
This was quite good. It had lots of excellent seasoning and was a great combination of textures. It was a little small for two people to share for dinner so next time we probably will each get our own. We gave our meal a B+.
We wanted to walk around to see some of the animals on the savannah but it was raining so we headed back to the hotel for dessert, the Chocolate Churro Cake from Gideon’s:
This was good, not great. DH liked it better than I did. The churro cinnamon is a little spicy for my tastes. I much prefer Gideon’s Chocolate Crumb Cake (formerly Pipistrello’s cake). The cinnamon is much sweeter in that cake. We feel like the cake slices have a little less cake than they used to, so we don’t love them as much as we once did. We gave this cake a B+.
Overall, it was another wonderfully paced day of enjoying the sites and the food.
