The reason I'm wondering, is that if the dollar trends strong during recessions, the exchange rates might stay low for a while. Still, as you say - what about the debt? The U.S. has every reason to want the dollar to drop at this point - if only because exports have been the only good thing in the economy for a while, and those will get choked off at today's exchange rates.

I don't know if a return to the West Coast would have helped that much. I don't think they sold out last summer's cruises, and it would be worse this summer unless they cut prices. It's almost certainly cheaper to run cruises out of Florida - they don't have to pay for the extra infrastructure and staff.

I think the magnitude of recession coming will leave few completely uneffected. The very wealthy, sure. But even those who own their own homes are being impacted. Many are older/retired, and they face the double whammy of higher food costs and possibly a huge loss in retirement income (depending on how they were invested).
The loss in retirement funds/investments colors ones outlook, as does the uncertainty.
Families (Disney's core market) are hit on all sides - fear of losing their jobs, increased food costs, Increased college/education costs, reduced services (state budgets are being slashed), and drop in value of investments if they have any. I don't know anybody who isn't stressed.

Dan

Dan its true, often at a time of recession people go to what is considered 'safe' ie the USA $ and gold.

The USA $ is the most important currency in the world, if you went broke, then we are all back to barter. Now last weeks gains were more to do with a safe haven and going into USA Treasury bonds and less to do with the UK, being worse than anyone else.

But the YEN has also gone up, countries are trying to reduce that, there are other reasons for this like paying back currency loans, but I think over time the USA $ will not be the safe haven it has always been, Might be wrong but it is all about the national debt of the USA, It has never ever tackled this and in time it will be an issue. (PS The same as our debt)

Yes we will never know what would have happened if DCL had not stayed in the Caribbean for 09, I would say, if I hadn't booked a Cat 3 for my 09 cruise, I would have moved that booking onto 2010 and the $ paid for it already.

I booked the Eastern to Tortola, as there was 'nothing' else to do at that time, I am not excited on the ports as this Baltic cruise, would have liked something more interesting.

You are very correct families the core market will be hit the most, another issue is us Brits, those who haven't booked WDW for 09 or other parts of the USA will now not book for a number of reasons, we are hit many WAYS:-

POOR EXCHANGE RATE,
HIGHER FLIGHT COSTS
HIGHER DISNEY TICKETS
ECONOMY A HOME,

WDW will suffer in 09 without the Brits, they will start to notice our absence and maybe we Will get more deals like free dinner plan

Laura in a nutshell it works like this.

You PM me your full name and postal address, as do all the other people who want to participate. I then compile a list with all that information and send it out to all the people on the list. You then send a christmas/channukah/holiday card to all the people on the list and you should get one back from all the people on the list.

It's a nice way to bring us all closer together and celebrate the holidays and it also great fun to see the cards coming through the door as they won't all be coming from the same country. :grouphug:

Sounds Good! I'm In! Y'all get to see me in person (almost!) :thumbsup2

GROGGY

Have not determined as of yet, not much planned for today!:cool1:

Yesterday was a bust had to deal with an Alarm technician for most of the day!

So what is the official drink for the cruise RUM RUNNER or KOOL AID?

I don't know about you but I'm betting that JoAnn had a bit of Kool-Aid last niight - anyone heard from her? :rotfl2:

I was totally disappointed in the 2009 offerings as well . . . as of now I don't have a cruise booked for 2009 although I might just do an Eastern in the summer if the prices look good . . .

Hey y'all, found a thread on the Adventures By Disney and got some answers back to some questions I posted. This is so much fun, I've got to call ABD and book this for just Steve and I. No Kids! :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo:

OK

If you are all that bored, let me give you a QUESTION OF THE DAY.

WHAT RESTAURANT/ MEAL. on ship is your favorite, and say for Breakfast/Lunch/ Dinner.

I must say I prefer Topsiders for Breakfast but have the odd sit down in Lumière's. I like to see the food spread and then decide what i want.

Again lunch is often Topsiders wit the odd Lumière's, often thats a port day and we nip back for lunch and then back off again.

At Palo I prefer Brunch with Dinner next, Afternoon tea has gone very downhill.

Dinner would be Animators for the 'show', but Lumière's for the food,

and to be greedy the Dessert buffet!!!

You can see I am not a great lover of Parrot Cay,

Breakfast - room service

Lunch - Burger from Lumiere's or chicken strips by the pool

Dinner - Whichever one I'm in on lobster night.

As for Palo, I love brunch for the food, dinner for a nice quiet evening for 2. Tea was OK the first time I did it a few years ago, but I was very disappointed on the repo.

Izzi, I've sent you a PM with more website links to go on the 1st page. They are all for Oslo.

Thanks for posting all the links I send you. :thumbsup2

Thanks for all the links!

There was a lot of Kool-Aid being drunk around here last night!

I'm holding a 3 night (10 year Wonder anniversary cruise - though by all accounts they aren't actually going to celebrate it).

My hope is actually to see a shuttle launch - and work a cruise around that. But it will be pretty last minute.
