UK General Election must be held soon, for Parliament, and thats all MP's and therefore also maybe a new Prime minister, until then (most likely first week in May) pond will be volatile as know one knows who will be in power or even a hung parliament.

However soon after that we will boost out of recession quickly confidence is high so the Pound will be back, one commentator said we might go as low as $1.30, I do not think so, in fact slight bounce today, but volatile till May.



Eur is bouncing back today.

Morning All,
Have been off the boards for a few weeks so I thought I would catch up. Also wanted to share an exciting event coming up next week in our area. Rick Steves is coming to speak hosted by our local PBS station. We are really excited to go and hear him. I wanted to say that if anybody has any questions they would like me to try and ask him I would be happy to do so. I've got to start putting together my top 10 list of what to ask. I was reading some posts about purchasing local currency, rubles specifically. I have read in a couple of places that you can't bring in or take out any rubles into Russia. We don't use ATM's so I hope that credit cards will be widely accepted in St. Pete otherwise we'll plan on hitting a bank upon arrival. I plan on checking with a currency exchange company locally. I like the idea of purchasing some Euros now while the gettin' is good.

Did we ever find out about Segway tours in Tallin? We'd still be interested if anybody has info or a group started.

Guess I better start reading past posts and get caught up. Please feel free to send my questions for Rick Steves if you have any.

I managed to make contact with the Segway company in Tallinn. They took a long time getting back to me which was annoying...but now that I think of it ...this has to be their off season and they probably don't check emails that often I'll check back in a couple months to see if they are out of hibernation yet

I think the discounted price was about $80 per person for a group of 10-12 for a 2 hour tour with guide. The minimum age was officially 16 but they did say they would allow younger with parents along.

I did check with my bank yesterday and you can get Rubles ahead of time. I think the rules have changed and you can bring it in (someone posted this on the main board).

Of course I have to go and buy some euros just when they go up

For those that have asked to be on the bus, if you haven't done so, please check your PMs. For any one else, the clock is ticking if you wish to join the bus as when the second bus is full we will be unable to accommodate any late comers for the trip to the port. If you would like coach transport from London - Dover for no more than £15/head, please PM me.

Baltic Sea ice traps passenger and cargo ships


A number of ships, including ferries with thousands of passengers on board, have become stuck in ice in the Baltic Sea, officials say.

The vessels are grounded in the waters between Stockholm and the Aland Islands, Radio Sweden reports.

Many of the vessels are not likely to be freed for hours, Swedish maritime authorities were quoted as saying by the AFP news agency.

It is reportedly the worst Baltic freeze for 15 years.

Both Sweden and Finland have deployed ice breakers in the area to help the stranded vessels.

"The ice wouldn't usually be a problem for the merchant ships, the problem now is that it's very windy, about 20 metres per second," Jonas Lindvall, controller of the ice breaking unit at the Swedish maritime authorities, told Radio Sweden.

"That means that the ice is moving rapidly, there are lots of ridges with ice that's making it problematic for the ships, so they need help from the ice breakers," the controller said.

Four Viking Line ferries - which regularly shuttle thousands of passengers between Finland and Sweden - are among the vessels stuck.

Unconfirmed reports say the ferries collided with each other when they tried to manoeuvre in packs of ice.
