Laurie you asked about credit card fees - sometimes your credit card issuer will charge a small percentage, around 3%, in addition to the actual charge by the merchant. The fee is a service charge for doing the currency conversion. Sometimes the fee is built into the US$ charge you see on your statement and sometimes it's an extra line fee broken out.
You have to remember that the credit card issuer fee is in addition to fee a merchant/vendor will charge for using your credit card. So that 3% fee the vendor charges could end up being a 6% fee once your credit card issuer adds in their fee.
I have a credit union card that doesn't charge the fee so we use that in ports.
