A report from the biggest event this weekend..
Beware,
Contains spoilers, -(highlight to read if you wish), upset, disappointment,,,,
Given that the Doctor saves the future of humanity every week, the rousing finale to Matt Smiths first series was bound to be a biggie.
Last week saw our hero hopping around after many little messages a clues, to find the Romans in England and Cleopatra here in UK Soil. After a lot of pre emptive battles with a broken up Cyberman, the Doctor is trapped for eternity in the safe-like Pandorica beneath Stonehenge, by an unlikely intergalactic coalition that included the Daleks, Cybermen and Sontarans every monster,- only the Klingons were missing, (and only by ST copywrite) . Amy was shot by an android Rory, devastated to have killed his true love, and only mildly surprised to find himself dressed as a Roman centurion.
As part one ends, every Sun in the universe, implodes, all die, all planets die, and time and the universe ends completly,,,,,,,but.........
Basecode of the universe is 26th June 2010, why? Well its the day of the UK premier of this second of two parts episode.
As you could have guessed, the Doctor saved the day with some good old-fashioned time travel, dishing out instructions and sonic screwdrivers to his trusty companions, as necessary. The almost-expired Amy was placed in stasis in the Pandorica, to await resurrection by her living DNA - the child Amelia Pond, just 1,894 years later. Rory, meanwhile, lovingly stood guard, ready for some timely dalek disposal.
Lots going on in an odd museum, where due to the universe imploding, lots of things, animals and locations are all mixed up.
After retrieving River Song from an exploding Tardis, the Doctor realised that the whole of history was imploding. By hotwiring the Pandorica (containing the seeds of the universe) and flying it into the Tardis (in touch with all of time and space), he was able to reboot the universe. Not bad work, for a Saturday night.
Tonights conclusion tied up other loose ends - why did the child Amelia live alone in a huge house? Because her family had been devoured by the reality-chewing crack in her bedroom wall. Why does the Eleventh Doctor have such odd tastes in clothing? Why does he take young Amys drink, to make her thirsty and ask for a drink, to give it back to her in a different time zone, Well, ok, it didnt answer that one. After all, Doctor Who is a Great British Institution, and open to reinvention.
But where was the Doctor,? It took Amy, on her Wedding day to say those lines, we knew they were going to come and we now know the alternative meaning, Something old, something new, something borrowed, and something Blue. So for an encore, he arrived in time for some appalling dad-style dancing after Amy and Rory finally tied the knot.
While David Tennant was pretty much the indie girls answer to Daniel Craigs bum, for others, Matt Smith is a welcome return to the quirkiness of earlier incarnations. With the enigmatic River Song looking set to ruffle the Doctors feathers in the next series, and nubile Amy safely hitched, the prospects for the Great Timeless One look as starry as ever.
We will find out, why silence will fall, and who has the power to take over the TARDIS, and try to blow it up.
PS
Do not mention the footballl!!! Boy are we going to have fun in Berlin.
